The Last Dance Final Episodes

We finish this series dissecting leadership and sports mental performance in the documentary, The Last Dance.

Find Your Inner Beast

Game 5 against the Utah Jazz in 1997, Michael Jordan became ill, suffering from food poisoning. Many people called this his "flu game." Jordan was exhausted, miserable, and had to take in IV fluids throughout the day just to have the energy to make it to the game. He didn't just make the game, he played 44 minutes and scored 38 points. He didn't use his circumstance as an excuse or reason to quit, he rose to the occasion. He dug deep into his motivation and mental toughness and pushed past his limits to perform at an impressive level. Those who watched that game were amazed at how he could play at an elite level, but once the whistle blew for a timeout or end of quarter, would be a lifeless man sitting on the bench, and turn back to that dominant player he was over and over again. That is integrity. That is toughness. That is why he is the greatest.

Find Your Role

Every person on a team has a role, and every role is important. Some people, like Michael Jordan, are the stars of the show who play at a high level. Some roles are like Dennis Rodman, the physical presence who did the dirty work of rebounding or lockdown defense. Some roles are like Steve Kerr, who maybe got 5 shots a game, but needed to make them, including a last second shot to win their 6th championship. Other roles are like John Paxton who was a key player in creating the flow of the team, assisting his teammates, and his teammates trusted that he would do everything right. What role are you on your team?

Find Your Accountability

Michael Jordan never fell short of keeping his teammates accountable and holding them to high standards, sometimes not in the most positive way. But one thing was for sure, he wanted his teammates to be successful because he knew that was what made the team successful. He also never asked them to do something he wasn't willing to do himself. He would give complete effort in every drill, finish first in conditioning, show up to all team practices and events. He challenged his teammates to be better, and his teammates respected him for that.

Find Your Drive

Michael Jordan hated losing. When he returned from retirement and his time in major league baseball, Michael and the Bulls lost in the playoffs. It was a shock to their team who was known for winning championships. Jordan looked at how the other team celebrated, he used how he felt as motivation, and he never wanted to feel that way again. Walking out of the stadium after defeat, his trainer asked him when he would like to start workouts for the offseason, Michael responded with, "I'll see you tomorrow morning." Michael Jordan's drive for success and his goal of winning championships pushed him to out-prepare his opponents, to separate himself as the greatest to ever play the game.
