A Few Moments with McCabe
What a Way to Start, Longhorns!
If the first week of school is any indication, 2026–2027 is going to be a great year to be a Longhorn!
There is something special about the first week of school - the energy in the hallways, the reunions with friends, the excitement (and occasional confusion!) of new schedules, and the countless little moments that make a school feel like a community. This year, our halls have been filled with energy, enthusiasm, kindness, belonging and an incredible sense of possibility.
From the first bell to the final bell last week, our students have shown up ready to learn, connect, compete, create, and make their mark on the 2026-2027 school year. Our staff have embraced the opportunity to welcome students back with open arms and remind them that they are known, valued, and an important part of the West High family.
When we told the student to Make It Matter - they certainly did.
Every interaction matters. Every classroom matters. Every act of kindness matters. Every question, challenge, risk, and opportunity matters. Most importantly, every Longhorn matters.
As we head into September, let's keep that first-week energy rolling. Let's continue to build a school where students feel like they belong, where learning feels meaningful, and where each of us looks for opportunities to make a positive difference. There is much to be excited about with Fall Sports now in full swing, Homecoming on the horizon, and we can really settle into each and every class to make the most out of each day.
The year is officially underway, the Longhorn spirit is strong, and we are just getting started.
Take Care of Yourself. Take Care of Each Other. Take Care of West High.
Let's make it a great one.
We Are West High!
With Longhorn Pride,
John McCabe
Principal, Parkway West High

MORNING ARRIVAL PROCEDURES
Students and Parents:
Please review this section whether you are riding the bus to school, dropping off your student, or driving yourself.
Officer Paubel (West High SRO) and I will be directing traffic in the morning to assist with drop-off. Please follow the following guidelines.
- Buses will drop-off students in front of the main entrance to school. Students will exit the bus and enter through those main entrance doors.
- Parent Drivers
- you will be directed to the front of school via the main driveway. You should NOT drive in the bus lanes at any point. Please use the lanes to the LEFT of the median and along the curb.
- You should also not use the drive directly into our main senior and staff parking lot in front of the school.
- Pull forward as much as possible as you stop to drop-off to maximize lane usage and lessen the stoppage to the flow of traffic then let your student out.
- Please go slow and yield to students and staff crossing from the main lot. Students should enter through either the Main Entrance or GYM Foyer Doors.
- Junior and Senior Student Drivers
- You may arrive on campus and park in your respective parking locations on campus.
- Juniors - Back of school and pit area unless instructed otherwise.
- Seniors - main lot in front of school and soccer lot in front of school.
- Please go slow and yield to students crossing from the main lot. Student should enter school through Main Entrance, Gym Foyer, and Cafeteria Doors.
BUS STOP INFORMATION
- Download the app as outlined in the instructions in the link.
- Share bus numbers with students for easier identification of their buses in the AM and PM.
WEST HIGH BUILDING PROCEDURES
- The building opens to students at 06:55 am.
- In the morning, students are expected to enter through Main Entrance and Gym Foyer Doors (bus riders, student drivers and students being dropped off) or Cafeteria Doors (student drivers).
- Breakfast is available from 07:00 am - 07:30 am.
- Classes begin at 07:35 am. Students are expected to be in their assigned room by 07:35 am. For the first few days of school, we will work with students as some adjust to a new building and all to a new schedule.
- The internal set of doors at the main entrance, gym and cafeteria doors will all be locked at 07:35 am. Students tardy to school should visit their grade level office for a pass to be permitted to class. Students will be issued a pass, then report to class.
- All visitors, including parents, are expected to enter through the main entrance and check in using the welcome vestibule at all times of the day.
- Visitors cleared to enter the main building are expected to wear their school issued visitor badge for the duration of their visit to West High.
- Students dismissed during the school day (e.g. for an appointment with a parent) are expected to exit the building through the main entrance.
- Parkway West High is a CLOSED CAMPUS.
- During school hours (07:00 am - 02:30 am), deliveries for students from outside entities, including, but not limited to food delivery services, are not allowed. Parents may continue to drop off items for students (lunch, athletic equipment, etc...), when necessary.
- Students and Visitors should never prop doors for any reason as this could lead to a major security breach.
- Students traveling within the building throughout the day should always have a pass provided to them by their teacher or staff member of Parkway West High. The only exception is passing time between classes.

Registered Youth Apprenticeship (RYA) Accelerator
Interested in a career in Advanced Manufacturing?
St. Louis County Registered Youth Apprenticeship (RYA) Accelerator
The Registered Youth Apprenticeship (RYA) program is a high-impact partnership between Parkway Schools and the U.S. Department of Labor designed to jump-start student careers through immersive, real-world learning. This program bridges the gap between traditional classroom instruction and professional excellence, specifically focusing on the high-demand field of Advanced Manufacturing.
Why Join RYA?
Earn While You Learn: Students receive a paid hourly wage for on-the-job training with industry partners.
Professional Credentials: Upon successful completion, participants earn a federally recognized Department of Labor credential that sets them apart in the workforce.
Industry Mentorship: Gain hands-on experience under the guidance of professionals at top regional companies such as Jost Chemical, Hydromat Inc., and Beckwood Press.
Career Advancement: The program prepares learners for successful, long-term careers by combining technical skill-building with foundational "soft skill" training.
Program Structure & Requirements
The RYA journey begins with a semester-long "Accelerator" process. This structured sequence includes foundational employability training, organized manufacturing tours, and a "Selection Day" where students interview directly with multiple employers. Once hired, student apprentices work toward completing 2,000 hours of on-the-job training to master industry-defined competencies.
To apply for our Fall Cohort, please complete this initial application by September 9th. You will then complete an in-person interview with Mrs. Perkins at your home school site.
SPEECH AND DEBATE TOURNAMENT
Parkway West Speech & Debate Annual Tournament
The Parkway West Speech and Debate Team is hosting our annual Fall Classic Speech and Debate tournament this October 16th & 17th. We request assistance from all Parkway community adults —parents, grandparents, and high school graduates— to volunteer their time to judge. Judges will watch a variety of performances done by high schoolers across the St. Louis area and vote on their favorites. Your support not only motivates our students to take on the responsibility of hosting a tournament, but it also encourages young adults to build their public speaking, argumentation, and persuasion skills in a fun and competitive way. Sign up NOW! For more information visit our WEBSITE or email us at pwestdebate@gmail.com.
