Cole Miners' Dig
October 2, 2026
Principal's Notes
It has been a great week of learning at Cole School even with the rainy and gray days we've had! We're glad to end the week with some sunshine! Students have been working to complete the fall screeners for reading, math, and social emotional skills. Once the data has been collected, we'll share the results with families through Aspen with a letter that outlines the steps to take to find that information. If you're interested in learning more about how Norwell Schools support students, check out this Norwell Tiered System of Supports document on the website.
Norwell Food Services are in need of:
1. Food Service Manager: prior experience necessary, 180 days per year, good benefits and competitive compensation.
2. Food Service Substitute: No experience necessary, flexible schedule, follows school calendar may lead to a more permanent position.
Please apply here if interested.
The installation for the new climber on the playground will be taking place tomorrow. Please steer clear of the installation if you happen to be at the playground on Saturday.
NEW THIS YEAR: All students will have lunch on early release days this year. The cafeteria will offer lunch options on these days. Our first early release is Friday, October 9th. Two grade levels will be eating at the same time following this schedule:
Grades 4 and 5 10:30-10:55
Grades 1 and 3 11:05-11:30
Grades K and 2 11:35-12:00
We had a very successful parent book group two years ago when we read The Anxious Generation by Jonathan Haidt. We have decided to host another parent book group this year. If you'd rather check out a video of Isabelle Hau's research and thoughts on the importance of relationships in the development of children, this video is a good place to get a preview. Please see the invitation below and RSVP if you'd like to join me in discussing Isabelle Hau's book, Love to Learn. We hope you'll join us!
Magnificent Meerkats
Our students are MAGNIFICENT! Many students were nominated this week for modeling expected behaviors, advocating for themselves when they need help, showing perseverance with academic challenges, and having a positive attitude! We're very proud of this week's Magnificent Meerkats!

Counselor's Corner
Great to have a sunny Friday! Students continue to learn about growth mindset and goal setting, and also work on their academic and social-emotional fall screeners. We have also welcomed back Spider the reading therapy dog on Tuesday afternoons! I am hoping to rotate all interested students in to read with him this year, so please let me know if you think your child(ren) would enjoy this opportunity. I have also started hosting "lunch bunch," where kids can sign up to eat in my office with up to 3 other kids in their grade. If your child is interested and needs my help to find an open time, please let me know. I can be reached at anne.walsh@norwellschools.org, or by calling the school and entering ext 1111.

Physical Education News
Kindergarteners continue to work on dynamic movements with spatial awareness and self control as the objective. Also practiced tossing and catching underhand using a beanbag with a partner. Grades 1 & 2 were throwing and catching with partners using either a beanbag, foam, funky, fleece or wiffle ball. Grades 3-5 warmed up with a fun throwing, catching and running game called Pickle/Run Down. Overhand throws for distance, underhand tosses when closer, lead passes and defending were all done with partners and larger groups.
