Bea Underwood Families-

Welcome to February! This month, we are focusing on two important priorities at our school: attendance and kindness. Showing up to school every day helps students build strong routines, stay connected to learning, and feel a sense of belonging in our school community.

February is also Kindness Month, a time when we encourage students to show care, respect, and compassion toward others. Small acts of kindness—at school and at home—make a big difference.

National School Counselors week is 2/2/26- 2/6/26. We would like to acknowledge our wonderful school counselors Mrs. Sherraden & Ms. DeMaio for all they do for our students, families and teachers daily!

We would like to celebrate the successes we are seeing with the use of Orton-Gillingham across 2nd through 5th grade. Our students are making meaningful progress as they build strong foundational reading skills through this structured, research-based approach. Thank you to our teachers and staff for their commitment to implementing this program with fidelity and to our families for supporting literacy growth at home. We are excited to continue this important work and watch our students grow as confident readers.

Thank you for partnering with us to support daily attendance and help our students grow into kind, confident learners.

As temperatures continue to drop, please make sure your children come to school dressed warmly each day. Coats, hats, and gloves help keep our students comfortable and ready to learn—especially during morning recess and outdoor activities. If your family needs support with winter clothing, please reach out; we’re here to help.

Parents, we need your help to keep our students safe and ensure timely drop-offs and pick-ups. Please pull all the way forward in the drop-off zone before allowing your child to exit the vehicle. Students should not get out of the car before the crosswalk.

These procedures help ensure that all students remain safe, that staff are available to assist students exiting vehicles, and that traffic continues to move smoothly. We truly appreciate your cooperation and support in following these safety procedures.

Every Day Counts

Regular attendance is one of the strongest predictors of student success. When students are at school every day, they build routines, stay connected to learning, and feel a strong sense of belonging.

How families can support strong attendance:

  • Prioritize daily attendance whenever your child is healthy. Even missing one or two days a month can add up.

  • Establish consistent routines for bedtime, mornings, and getting to school on time.

  • Schedule appointments outside of school hours when possible.

  • Communicate with the school if your child is struggling or if absences are unavoidable—we are here to help.

  • Talk positively about school and encourage your child to share what they are learning.

Thank you for partnering with us to help every student learn, grow, and succeed—every day.

Inclement Weather Procedures Inclement Weather Procedures

User uploaded image

Please review our procedures for winter weather, snow days, and two-hour delays.

As we prepare for the winter months, these are the school closing and two-hour delay procedures. School closing, delay, and cancelation decisions are made based on the weather and road conditions in the Garfield 16 area and neighboring areas.

School Closing/Snow Day

If there is inclement weather, the District will decide to close school by 5:15 a.m., based on the conditions at 5:00 a.m.. Parents will be notified by 6:00 a.m. if there is a snow day or delayed start.

After School Activities for a School Closing/Snow Day

All after school activities will be evaluated throughout the day if the District is closed for weather or weather conditions become hazardous during the day. The District will notify staff, students, and families of after school activities cancellations by 1:00 p.m.

Two-Hour Delay

A two-hour delay will be used when the road conditions are not suitable for travel at 5:00 a.m., but are expected to improve throughout the day. The District will decide to call a delayed start by 5:15 a.m.. This will allow snowplows additional time to clear the roads. On a two-hour delayed schedule, buses will begin their routes two hours late, and all classes will begin two hours late.

Schools will operate on a modified schedule. Start times will simply be pushed back by two hours. Students will have breakfast and lunch. Students will be dismissed at the regular time.

In the event that the District has a two-hour delay and the road conditions do not improve, the District may decide to close schools for the day. The District will make this decision by 7:30 a.m. based on the conditions at 7:15 a.m.

AM Cardinal Club will be canceled on a two-hour delay day. PM Cardinal Club will continue as scheduled on a two-hour delay day. Find the two-hour delay bell schedules on our G16 Communications webpage: https://www.garfield16.org/communications/school-closure-information

Early Dismissal

In the event that weather conditions start or worsen once students are in school, the decision to have an early dismissal will be made by 10:00 a.m.

All after school activities will be canceled.

AM Cardinal Club will continue as scheduled on an early dismissal day. PM Cardinal Club will be canceled on an early dismissal day.

Communication

All families will be notified of a school closing through the district messaging system, media outlets, and social media as soon as possible.

Please be sure that your contact information is current by checking in with the secretaries at the front office so that in the event of school closures, Garfield 16 is able to contact you. (970)285-5703.

Wish week is a week-long event hosted by GVHS in collaboration with Make-A-Wish Colorado. A local child is chosen and the school helps to raise funds for this child to have a wish granted.

This years child is Violeta. Violeta had a tumor in her eye that was very aggressive. In order to stop the progression and save her they removed her eye. She is now cancer free! Violeta's wish is to meet her favorite K-Pop Group!

GVHS will be hosting a Silent Auction on February 26th, at 4pm to raise money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Make-A-Wish is a wonderful cause and a great way to support a local little girl and her family as they work on healing together! We hope you will join us at GVHS for the basketball game and Silent Auction Fund Raiser for this local family.
