Parkside Post
January 2026
Greetings Parkside Bullfrogs!
Happy New Year! We hope everyone had a wonderful winter break and holiday season! We missed seeing our students and were so excited to welcome them back earlier this week! Students are right back to their routines and we will be keeping them focused on learning as we start Semester 2. Please encourage your child to do their best each day and celebrate their accomplishments with them!
As a reminder, students will be taking their BEST and FAST PM2 assessments in the coming weeks. See the dates below for when your child will be testing. Please ensure they get a good night's sleep prior to testing and have a wholesome breakfast!
Our annual Family Academic Night and Student-Led Conferences will be on Tuesday, January 27, from 5:00-7:00pm. Dinner will be available in the cafeteria between 5:00-6:00. CCPS Pre-K department will be here as well to provide families information about registering their child.
January 30 will be Crocs & Socks Day! Students can wear Crocs & Socks for $1. All proceeds benefit the students, staff, and families at PSE through our Parent Lighthouse Team.
There are many helpful links and important details in our monthly newsletter, so please take a few minutes to look through the information each month. If you have any questions, please contact your child's teacher or call the front office. We are here to help!

MORNING DROP OFF REMINDER
Drop off begins at 7:30. Student should not be exiting vehicles prior to that time. Please pull all the way forward when dropping off your child in the morning. This helps us get more students unloaded in a timely manner. Students should not be dropped off until you pull up and are parked at a pole. The curve at the back of the line near the bushes is NOT a drop off location. Please follow these expectations for the safety of all students and staff!
CAR SIGNS
Please make sure you have a car sign in your vehicle every day. It significantly slows down our dismissal when we have to check IDs and verify approved pick ups. If you do not have a car sign, please come to the front office and we will provide one. You can also request multiple signs if you have different people picking up your child.
Walker Procedures for Kindergarten and First Graders
The safety of our students is a top priority. All kindergarten and 1st grade students who walk home, need to be met at the walker gate by an adult who has the walker tag. Students will not be released without the proper walker tag being presented. If you forget your tag, our staff will call the front office to verify approved pick ups. The person picking up the child must have a photo ID to verify identity, if they don't have the walker tag. Students who walk home with older students, with parent permission, are permitted to leave.
Thank you for partnering with us to make Parkside a safe place for all!
COACHES' CORNER
Math This Month
Welcome back, families! In January, students will continue building strong math foundations aligned to Florida’s B.E.S.T. Standards and measured through FAST progress monitoring. Instruction will focus on developing conceptual understanding, accuracy, and the ability to explain mathematical thinking.
Across grade levels, students will:
- Strengthen number sense and place value
- Use addition and subtraction strategies to solve real-world problems
- Represent thinking with models, drawings, and equations
- Explain why their answers make sense using math vocabulary
Upper elementary students may also work with multiplication and division, fractions, and multi-step problem solving, while primary students will focus on counting, composing/decomposing numbers, and early operations.
How Families Can Help at Home:
Encourage your child to talk through their thinking when solving problems. Ask questions like, “How do you know?” or “Can you show it another way?” These math conversations support the skills emphasized on FAST assessments.
Thank you for partnering with us to support your child’s math growth!
Science News
Coming up during the week of February 2-6, all students at Parkside will participate in our 4th annual Parkside Everglades Week. It is an entire week dedicated to learning all about the Everglades, the habitats within, the animals, and the people working to protect it. We will also continue our practice of letting students give back to the Everglades through another fundraising effort. In the past, our students have raised money to purchase a trail camera to help protect the endangered Florida Panther and a GPS tracker to help monitor the migration patterns of the Swallow-tailed Kite. This year’s animal is still a secret and will be revealed in the days to come. All of our fundraising efforts don’t just end with a check. We have formed long-lasting relationships with these organizations that continue to provide our students with valuable learning opportunities, such as images from the PSE trail cameras and data from the Kite tracking program.
During and after that week would be a great time to capitalize on your child’s interest in the plants and animals around the neighborhood and their desire to do real science. On February 13-16, the Great Backyard Bird Count will take place. This will be an opportunity for your child(ren) to get outside and participate in real citizen science. Your family's observations will help real scientists better understand global bird populations. If you would like more information about the bird count, visit www.birdcount.org.
Counselor's Corner
Welcome back and Happy New Year! I hope your family enjoyed a restful winter break. January is a great time to reset routines, reflect, and set goals for the new year. As students return to school, classroom lessons will focus on goal setting, growth mindset, and building positive habits that support both learning and well-being.
Students will learn how to set simple, age-appropriate goals, talk about steps to reach them, and practice perseverance when things feel challenging. Families can support this work at home by talking with your child about one small goal they want to work on and celebrating their efforts along the way.
Thank you for your continued partnership as we support our students this year!
English Language Learners
ELL students will be taking WIDA ACCESS between January 12, 2026 and March 13, 2026. WIDA ACCESS measures your student’s progress in listening, speaking, reading, and writing English skills.
By working together, we can make your child’s test experience positive and successful. Here are some suggestions that you can do to help your child succeed:
· Make sure your child gets a good night’s rest
· Have your child eat a healthy breakfast at home or in the cafeteria school
· Make sure your child arrives at school on time
· Gently encourage your child to do their best
If you or your student would like to review the materials, practice tests are available at https://wida.wisc.edu/assess/access/preparing-students/practice.

Scholastic Book Fair Coming Soon!
The Parkside Elementary School Library is excited to host our annual Scholastic Book Fair January 26–30! The Fair will be open daily from 8:30–2:30, and families are also invited to shop together during Family Academic Night on Tuesday, January 27, from 5–7 PM.
Parents can set up a Scholastic eWallet, a safe and convenient way for students to shop independently and choose books they’re excited to read. eWallets are easy for families to create and for friends and relatives to contribute to. Any unspent funds become a Scholastic eGift balance that can be used at a future Book Fair or online.
