We have so much pride to share this month!
Building a Growth Mindset
Dear Families of FES,
This month, we have been working hard as a school to build a growth mindset! From the students' perspective, having a growth mindset means that we need to be willing to embrace challenges and look at them as opportunities for growth. Since completing our earlier fall assessments, students have been creating lofty academic goals and learning how self-talk and team work can make challenges feel less overwhelming. When you have a growth mindset, hard work, dedication and overcoming a setback brings success. We are working hard as a school to gain trust of our peers, embrace restorative practices and become problem solvers for ourselves and others. I am proud of every student's effort and it shows what makes FES such a welcoming and special place to be. Go Team!
I hope you all enjoy a wonderful and relaxing holiday celebration next week filled with great food, family and friends.
Enjoy and stay safe,
Kathie

Highlights from Our Week
This Week in Music
We had a great week of singing, playing instruments, learning new musical concepts, and playing Fall/Thanksgiving music games and songs.
The K/1 class studied high and low. They played different musical patterns on piano, xylophone, and boom whackers. The 1/2 class learned about musical contour and practiced creating and playing many different shapes and songs. The 3/4 class reviewed basic rhythms. They composed music in many different ways and even made a "Thanksgiving Plate" rhythm using different foods.
Kindergarten Lizards!!
In Science we finished our unit on animal traits and needs. The students colored lizards with chalk. Then they glued them on paper of the same color to show camouflage. Next we are learning about American symbols in Social Studies.
Grade 1-2 Class with Mrs. Morrocco and Mrs. Mack
Our Grade 1-2 class was busy observing and answering questions about nature! Students dug deep into their scientific knowledge and past lesson experiences to ask and answer questions and experiment with cause and effect. Students conducted an experiment to learn about the force of nature and what specific variables need to occur to make outcomes change. The question was, "Why don't trees blow down in the wind?" and after some partner discussion and predictions, students tested their theories by creating windproof umbrellas. They had fun seeing how each one's model held up to the strongest wind from a classroom fan. A debrief discussion brought interesting observations!
On another note, students were working on creating a learning zone classroom this week. We changed out tables for desks and students continued setting independent goals in reading and math. We appreciate all of Mrs. Mack's effort, energy and enthusiasm in supporting our our amazing students as we transition to a different and exciting learning trimester ahead! Thank you for all you do for FES!
The Most Important Part of the Day
Please remember to allow some extra minutes before school to have your child eat a nutritious breakfast. Students use a lot of energy at morning recess (it's cold!) and when they begin their learning day in their classroom, they are coming in sharing they may not have had breakfast. FES does not offer school breakfast, at least not yet, and it is very important that students are ready to immerse themselves in learning.
Additionally, please communicate with the front office if you do not want your child receiving a school snack. This is something we offer and students are charged for the snack received. However, it's important to note that families could qualify for Free or Reduced snack and/or lunch so please check with us to see if you would like to apply for this offering. It is an anonymous process and once in which your child could benefit.
Baby It's Cold Out There...Brrr.....
All students need to come to school with the appropriate clothing for the current weather. Warm coats or jackets, hats, mittens or gloves need to be on them for warmth, especially in the mornings when it can be shady in the back of the school. Thank you for ensuring they are comfortable and ready! If you need help finding the right weather clothing, please reach out to FES or the Grapevine. We are all here to help!
