Hello,

Grades have been posted since Friday, October 16. Please make sure that you have reviewed your student’s grades in the Parent Portal. Remember, it is not how students start, it is how they finish. If needed, reach out to teachers for any questions you may have or additional support for your student.

Tomorrow is the PSAT for our sophomores and some of our juniors. Students need to get the proper rest tonight so they can be on time and ready to go in the morning. All other students have a plan for tomorrow with various instructional tasks that will be completed with the 3rd period classes. As a reminder, there will be no self-checkouts for students and there may be longer than normal wait times to check students out.

A community school is a school that offers comprehensive educational opportunities through both academic and non-academic services while partnering with families, students, and the community to increase student access and success. While every community is different, the Community School Strategy offers a tailored approach grounded in four key pillars:

  1. Integrated student supports
  2. Expanded and enriched learning time and opportunities
  3. Family and community engagement
  4. Collaborative leadership and practices

You can support this process by completing our brief Community and Family Survey if you have not done so already.

Sincerely,
Duane Sprull, Ed.D.

On October 17th, AP Language and Composition students from Ms. Fetters, Ms. McMahon, and Ms. Weetman’s classes enjoyed an enriching field trip to the High Museum of Art!

The trip's primary goal was to give students a hands-on opportunity to examine the connections between visual and written texts 📝. By analyzing the masterpieces, students sharpened their understanding of key rhetorical concepts like audience, purpose, exigence, and perspective.

Following this immersive experience, students will use their museum insights as a springboard for writing a complex argument essay. It was a productive and inspiring day that brought theory to life! ✨

On October 16, Superintendent Dr. Gyimah Whitaker emailed a letter to City Schools of Decatur community that the Board of Education has initiated a comprehensive review of K-2 school utilization. This review will assess how CSD's K-2 schools are currently being utilized to ensure that space, staffing, and resources align with student needs while also maintaining operational efficiency and fiscal responsibility.

The Board of Education work session on October 14, 2025, served as a preliminary discussion to review various options, including the potential closure of a K-2 school. The consulting firm Education Planners has been engaged to facilitate this process and presented a timeline for the first time at the board work session, along with a detailed overview of the school closure and redistricting process. The board has not yet decided which school, if any, will be closed. There will be opportunities for families to share their input in the upcoming weeks.

Please read the full letter in English here. Additional language translations of the letter and up-to-date information about the process are available on the K-2 School Consolidation & Redistricting Process webpage. Stakeholder engagement is encouraged and vital as we work together to make the best decisions for our students and schools.

The community is invited to upcoming public hearings to provide feedback:

  • Wednesday, October 29, 6:30-8:00 p.m., Beacon Hill Middle School, Cafeteria
  • Thursday, November 13, 6:30-8:00 p.m., Beacon Hill Middle School, Cafeteria

In addition to the in-person public hearings, input may be submitted via this feedback form.
