College Planning Checklist

College Applications

Colleges choose the date their application will open for the next cycle. You may start applying for college as early as July 1st for some universities, but the majority of applications open on August 1st across the country. Alamo Colleges applications typically open on September 1st.

For information including essays, deadlines & scholarships check these application websites or the websites of your college(s).

Apply Texas Application - for all public and most private colleges/universities in Texas (deadlines vary by college)

Common Application - for over 1,000 colleges across the US and other countries, including 31 Texas public and private colleges/universities (deadlines vary by college)

Coalition Application - for over 150 colleges across the US, including 11 Texas public and private colleges/universities (deadlines vary by college)

Common Black College Application - for 66 Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU's) using one application and one fee for all

University of California - for all University of California colleges (please note, applications can only be submitted between Nov 1st - Nov 30th, but students may work on applications prior to that month)

Cal State Apply - for all California State colleges (please note, applications can only be submitted between Nov 1st - Nov 30th, but students may work on applications prior to that month)

State University's of New York - for the 64 State University of New York locations (deadlines vary by college)

If you do not find your college(s) on these applications, you should apply via their own application on their websites. There are several universities that use their own application only.

Finally, you may find that your college(s) participate in several applications. Please note, all colleges report that any of the applications work for their purposes and none are preferred over any of the other application platforms. They prefer the student make the best choice for application platform. Do this by reviewing your list and using the application that can best be used by multiple colleges on your list. You may get lucky with only one application platform, but most students will use several.

Action Item: Send Academic Records Action Item: Send Academic Records

Warren/CCA Transcripts

All colleges review academic performance. Most colleges require students to send a transcript from their high school Registrar's Office. For all NISD schools, you must request through the district's website. There is a $3 charge per transcript, including a copy for yourself if you choose to get one. It is best to request the transcripts are sent directly to the colleges. It is the preferred method for most schools.

College Credit Transcripts

If you have completed Dual Credit courses with Northwest Vista and/or UT Austin (On Ramps), please make sure to send those transcripts from those schools. NISD and Warren/CCA cannot access or send on their behalfFor Dual Credit, log into your ACES account, click on the student link and request official transcripts. For OnRamps, click here to request transcripts.

Self Reported Grades

There some colleges across the country that prefer students self-report their grades instead of sending a transcript. The California public schools ask students to report grades on the application as do some Common App schools. There is another self-report option called Self-Reported Academic Record (STARS). In Texas, there are 5 schools that require grades this way. You can see those schools on the list below. 4 of the 5 schools will use an online system for students to fill out and then link their grades back to their colleges. The University of Houston is the only school of the five that asks you to report the core classes only. See below for more info.

What is the SRAR/SSAR?

Which Texas colleges/universities accept the SSAR/SRAR?

  • Baylor University
  • Texas A&M University
  • University of Texas at Arlington
  • University of Texas at San Antonio

For the most up-to-date list of participating colleges and universities, please reference the 'My Colleges and Universities' dashboard on the home page of your SRAR/SSAR.

Please note, the University of Houston also requires students to self-report their grades. They use a different system. Link here for information on their process.

How to Self-Report Your Transcript

Advanced Placement

Please note, AP classes and/or exams are NOT college credit. They are exams that colleges can review for credit, but they are not automatically college courses. AP scores can often be self-reported in the application without having to request for admission review.

Action Item: Orientation Sign-up OR Enrollment Deposit Action Item: Orientation Sign-up OR Enrollment Deposit

Most colleges require one of two actions to confirm attendance. Each college will inform students of their preferred option. Colleges will either ask students to sign up for orientation OR send an enrollment deposit.

Please note, the enrollment deposit is different than a housing deposit. Enrollment deposit holds a place in the class for the student and housing holds a dorm room/space for the student. Enrollment deposits are typically tracked by admission offices while housing is tracked by residence life offices.

If you confirm enrollment with a Texas college, you must demonstrate your level of college readiness. This is most commonly done by taking the TSI (Texas Success Initiative) assessment. You can take this exam at your college or at one of our local campuses. Northwest Vista is the most common location to take the TSI. You can review NVC's Testing Center's information here or call any of the other Alamo Colleges or your college for other testing site information.

You may also exempt out of taking the TSI with your SAT or ACT scores. Scores may exempt you from the whole test or sections of the TSI. You must send your test scores to the college for exemption review. SAT qualifying scores are 530 in the Math Section and/or 480 in the Evidence Based Reading and Writing Section. ACT must have an individual score of 19 in Math and/or English AND an overall score of 23. Click here to review TEA's exemption policies.
