Hanover Street School Newsletter
September 16, 2024

Hello HSS Families,
As of this weekend, we have moved into all of our new spaces and they are beautiful and functional. We can't wait for the final class to enter their newly renovated room today.
There are two upcoming opportunities for our families to see the new spaces. The Ribbon Cutting Ceremony will be from 5:30 to 6:30 on September 25th. It will begin at the new high school entrance and then the tour will go through the high school and into HSS to visit all of our new spaces.
In addition, we will be holding our school wide Open House on October 8th from 5:00 - 6:00. We are inviting all of you to visit your children's classrooms and say "Hello" to the staff.
If you have any questions, feel free to call the office or send us an email at hssoffice@sau88.net.

September Spirit Days
We have planned for two spirit days a month.
Ribbon Cutting Ceremony
Early Dismissal - October 1st, Tuesday
Please make a note that we have an early dismissal day on Tuesday, October 1st. The students will be dismissed at 12:30 and buses will leave accordingly.
Student Birthday Celebrations
This year Megan McFarland, Asst. Principal, and I are going to host a birthday table in the cafeteria once a month and all students who have birthdays during that month are invited to come and join us.
Bus Route vs. Bus Number
Based on some feedback from parents, we are going to begin to call the buses "Route 7" instead of "L7". We are hoping that this helps with the confusion caused when a bus is out of service and the black painted bus number no longer matches the route number. The route numbers will be posted on the buses.

Fostering Successful Elementary School Students
Make sure students eat breakfast either at home or at school. Food is always available at school for all students.
Pack your student healthy, delicious snacks. Students work hard during the day and need lots of nutrition for energy.
Send in some extra clothing for your student in case of any kind of accident. It feels best to be in dry, comfortable clothes.
Create a routine as elementary school students LOVE structure, routine and predictability!
Instead of asking “How was school today?” TRY ASKING “Tell me something you did in school today.”
Make sure students get at least 10 hours of sleep a night. Create a calm and consistent bedtime routine.
Read to your student or have your student read to you before bed.
Remind your students that we all make mistakes . . . mistakes help us learn and become stronger, smarter people!
GENERAL HEALTH REMINDERS:
If your child has a fever (over 100.0 F) or has been vomiting or experiencing diarrhea, the student needs to remain home until he or she is free of illness for 24 hours without using any medication.
The Lebanon School District is following CDC Guidelines for COVID. As long as your student is fever free, he or she may come to school. Masks are not required either but still very much appreciated. If your child has a serious cough or a really runny nose, I recommend keeping them at home until these symptoms subside as these symptoms can interfere with learning.
Students at this level cannot carry their own medications; all medications need to be stored in my office.
I am here to support your student but also your family to ensure that everyone is as healthy and happy as possible. Please contact me if you have questions or concerns.
Stay well,
Holly Maher, RN

Finally, as we look ahead into fall, mark your calendars for our Game Night on October 18 from 5:30 to 7:00. With active games in the school gym, and food and Bingo in our brand new school cafeteria!
Schoolyard Committee
From Tanya Watson:
I am so excited for another year at Hanover Street! We have BIG plans for this year and I cannot wait to see the progress we make. Our committee was formed several years ago when we noticed a need to improve the playground structures and recess spaces at our school. Since then, we've been awarded several grants that helped us purchase trees for the schoolyard and plan a meadow habitat project. Finding our Stride did a fundraiser and with that money we were able to purchase new recess equipment and paint to improve the blacktop spaces on our campus.
Our first meeting is scheduled for Thursday, September 26 @ 3:15 pm. We meet directly after school to make it more accessible for staff members who want to participate.
For more information, you can email hanoverstreetschoolpto@gmail.com or call Tanya on her cell at 910-308-5237.
Notes from the HSS Community Garden
Greetings HSS Community!
Last year, Mrs. Matthews’ 3rd grade class partnered with the Kearsarge Food Hub to support its Abenaki Seed Project, which supports the production and distribution of Coosuk Abenakis’ traditional corn, beans and squash varieties. We were given Abenaki Rose Flint Corn seeds, Long Squash seeds and True Cranberry Bean seeds, and I’m thrilled to share that we had a successful crop of each of the “Three Sisters”! The students decided to give back ¾ of the bean seeds harvested to the Abenaki Seed Project, and keep ¼ for HSS to grow next year. Below are photos of the 3rd graders’ project, as well as photos of volunteers’ constructing our new raised beds over the summer. Thank you volunteers!
To read the Garden Newsletter and see photos of our crops, the newsletter is linked here.
Interested in participating in this project next year with your family? Reach out to me for more info!
As always, I appreciate your support of the HSS Garden! Check out our webpage here and email me with any questions at macarthur-mckay@sau88.net.
Sincerely,
Ms. MacArthur
