MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Mitchell Families,
As we continue our transition into the winter and holiday season, we are reminded of the importance of coming together as a school community. This special time of year highlights the values of connection, generosity, and reflection, all of which play a vital role in education. The changing seasons bring opportunities for growth, gratitude, and outreach, reinforcing our shared commitment to supporting every student and family.
Here are some important updates and reminders for the week of November 9. The Universal Gradebook Mid-Quarter deadline was Friday, October 7. Students and families are encouraged to review and understand our universal gradebook and late homework policy, which is designed to promote fairness and consistency, set clear expectations, and support students in their academic growth. These practices help build trust, promote accountability, and prepare our students for future success. Behavior, attendance, and grade/grade point average (GPA) data are key indicators in monitoring students' progress toward graduation status. Friday, December 19, marks the end of quarter 2, and will lock in first-semester credits and GPAs.
From November 3 to December 12, our Student Council is organizing the Annual Marauders Toy Nation Toy Drive for the Southeast Area feeder schools. Thanks to community generosity last year, our Student Council was able to provide toys to three D11 elementary schools, bringing joy to many children. Donation boxes are beginning to appear in the hallways, where new and unopened toys can be donated. We appreciate your continued support in making this year's drive a success.
Parents and guardians are encouraged to complete the 5Essentials Parent Survey between October 15 and November 20. Your input is invaluable in helping us understand and enhance our school's culture and climate. Research indicates that family engagement is associated with higher academic achievement, improved attendance, and better graduation rates. Please participate at: https://survey.5-essentials.org/sd11/survey/parent.
Finally, there will be no school for students on Monday, November 10. Our staff will be participating in professional development as part of our 2025-26 unified school improvement plan, supported by our Instructional Empowerment partners. We are also pleased to welcome Galileo and Swigert Middle Schools to collaborate and promote instructional alignment, ensuring a high-quality and consistent experience for all students as they transition to high school across all campuses.
We look forward to welcoming our students back on Tuesday, November 11, for another great week of instruction, learning, and activities!
Thank you for your partnership and commitment to Mitchell High School, where We Increase Numbers by believing in our Students-WINS!
-George Smith, Principal
PURPOSE AND INTENTION: 5Essentials Parent Survey
PLEASE COMPLETE!!! SURVEY OPEN FROM OCTOBER 15 - NOVEMBER 20
About the 5Essentials System
The 5Essentials framework defines five key supports linked to student success:
• Effective Leaders
• Collaborative Teachers
• Ambitious Instruction
• Supportive Environment
• Involved Families
Schools strong in these essentials show higher student growth, attendance, and engagement.
Why the Parent Survey Matters
The 5Essentials Parent Survey gives families a voice in shaping stronger schools. Your feedback helps identify what’s working well and where schools can grow—supporting better teaching, leadership, and family partnerships.
Schools use the results to guide improvement plans, strengthen communication, and build more supportive learning environments for every student.
Research Impact
Schools strong on at least three of the five essentials are up to ten times more likely to improve student learning. Even small gains in these areas predict better outcomes over time.

¿QUÉ ES EL S.A.C.?
S: Escuela (School), A: Responsabilidad (Accountability), C: Comité (Committee).

A Note About College Applications and Post-Secondary Planning:
Senior students still needing help completing their college applications should see Mrs. Montez or Mr. Cooks in the Future Center. If students are not interested in attending college directly after high school, we still need to meet with you! There are lots of other opportunities for students who are interested in apprenticeships, internships, military etc.
Students With Jobs Outside of School/Potential High School Credit:
For any student who is employed and has not filled out the application for high school credit in Schoolinks, please see Mrs. Montez or Mr. Cooks in the Future Center. Students who work a certain number of hours within a semester can earn high school credits.
