Mr. Whittle

My name is Chad Whittle, and I am entering my seventh year at North Central and my 21st year in education. Before coming to North Central, I spent nine years as the athletic director at Starmont. I have also coached junior high basketball for 20 years and baseball for five years.

My wife, Angela, and I were married in 2020, and we have a two-year-old daughter named Lucy. In my spare time.......just kidding I have a two year old daughter.

I grew up on a dairy and hog farm near Elkader in northeast Iowa, where my parents still live. We try to visit them—and return to my farming roots—as often as time allows.

Mr. Meade

My name is Travis Meade, and I am excited to begin my 16th year in education and my 11th year teaching at the middle school level. Before joining North Central, I spent eight years at Northwest Junior High and previously taught sixth grade at Lucas Elementary on the east side of Iowa City. Although my job title and responsibilities have remained fairly consistent over the years, my passion for working with young people continues to grow.

Outside of school, my family and the outdoors are a big part of who I am. I love spending time in the woods turkey hunting or on the water fishing. When I’m not outdoors, there’s a good chance I’m watching a sporting event—especially anything involving the Iowa Hawkeyes. In fact, football season is easily my favorite time of year!

Football has been an important part of my life for many years. I had the privilege of playing offensive line for the University of Iowa from 2005–2009, an experience I will always be grateful for. I also spent 11 years coaching varsity football at West High School and currently coach the varsity offensive line at Solon High School. Football has taught me many lessons about teamwork, perseverance, leadership, and the importance of being part of something bigger than yourself.

While I have enjoyed many accomplishments in both football and education, my favorite role is being a dad. My wife, Lindsey, and I are blessed with four children: Colton (13), Addison (11), Gavin (9), and Bowen (7). They keep us busy, laughing, and constantly on the move! Lindsey is also an entrepreneur and owns Lindsey’s Stitchins, an embroidery and screen-printing apparel business. The business has grown quickly, and I often spend my evenings helping out in what we jokingly call the “Meade sweatshop,” pressing and printing shirts. I also enjoy helping design some of the apparel—especially hats. I have a bit of a hat-collecting habit and have accumulated several hundred over the years!

This is my fourth year at North Central, and I can honestly say that I am enjoying this school community more than ever. I am continually impressed by the commitment our staff demonstrates to their craft, as well as the leadership and support throughout our building. Most importantly, our students bring so much energy, excitement, and personality to our school each day.

My years in North Liberty have reignited my passion for teaching young people how to be productive, responsible, and engaged members of their communities and our world. I am grateful to be part of the North Central community and look forward to another great year of learning, growing, and building relationships with our students and families.

I have taught for over 20 years from Kindergarten in Kansas City to elementary and middle school here in North Liberty. I also live in North Liberty with my husband and our 2 dogs. My son plays baseball at Clarke University in Dubuque and my step-son is a Senior at City High this year. For fun, we love to travel and watch sports. I love my Hawkeyes, the Cardinals, and the Chiefs! Looking forward to a great year--Go Bolts!

Mrs. Whitlock

My name is Sabrina Whitlock and I am in my 3rd year at North Central Middle School. This is my 24th year teaching 6th grade! Prior to my time at North Central, I taught at Penn, Grant, Garner, and Roosevelt Elementaries in the Iowa City Community School District, as well as Pendergast School District in Phoenix, Arizona. My husband Matt and I have three children, Nolan (20), Cole, (14), and Everly (9) and spend much of our time watching them do what they love - which means a lot of baseball, softball, and dance.

I am so thankful to be a part of the North Central community and have truly enjoyed my transition to middle school.

Hi, my name is Evan Downes, and I’m entering my second year as an Engagement & Intervention Strategist at North Central Middle School. This is my sixth year in education, all within ICCSD. I previously worked at Weber Elementary as a School Facilitator, and I’ve coached football at Liberty for seven years.

I enjoy getting to know students and helping them feel connected and supported at school. I’m looking forward to another great year at North Central!

Stem Class

In 7th & 8th grade STEM we started three new projects this week, all having to do with coding and engineering. One has to do with creating a speaker using a breadboard and various wires, another uses buttons and switches to create different light patterns through a breadboard, and the third uses coding to communicate through micro bits.

Attendance

Attendance Procedures for North Central Middle School:

If your student is going to be late to school, needs to leave school early or will be absent from school, please make sure you have reported this to the NCMS Attendance Office by 9:00am on the day of the absence. You may call the attendance line at 319-688-1210 (Press 1 for attendance) or enter the absence in the Attendance Request section of Infinite Campus. Please give the date(s) and reason for the absence. (**Early releases requested in Infinite Campus must be done at least 2 hours before the student is to leave NCMS)

If a student needs to leave school early, please give the time the student is to be picked up from NCMS. Your student will be given a pass to leave their class and meet parents/guardians in the main office. Students are not permitted to leave class until the parent/guardian has contacted the attendance office directly.

Communicating absences to teachers directly or texting your student is not considered a communicated absence. The attendance office must be made aware of all absences.

Please note: Parents/Guardians will now be receiving automated attendance calls at the end of each period a student has an uncommunicated absence.

Food and Drink

All food and drink, other than water bottles, should remain in the cafeteria. You may not consume food in your classrooms unless it is provided by a specific teacher for their class (The cafeteria is considered a classroom during Studyhall time). Only water bottles may be taken in hallways and to classrooms. If a staff member sees you with food or any drinks other than water, you may be instructed to throw the item away.

Food Deliveries

North Central does not accept door dash, or other food delivery services for students. Parents may bring lunch items for students, but items brought in from delivery drivers will not be accepted

STUDENT DROP OFF

Students are not allowed access to the building before 8:30am. Students wanting to meet with teachers, must get permission from the teacher prior to the meeting, to be let in to the building before 8:30am. The office will not allow students in to the building before that time unless notification from the teacher has been given to the main office. Students will not be allowed up to meet with teachers before 8:15am unless that has also been clearly communicated with office staff.

Chromebook Expectations

At North Central, a major component of being READY to learn is having a charged chromebook at school every day. Please discuss this with your student and create a plan for ensuring your student charges their chromebook each night and brings it to school each day. We have charging carts in the Library and Bolt Space if students need to charge their device during the school day

CELL PHONE POLICY

  • Cell Phone/Personal Technology Policy & Confiscation Procedures

Cell phones: Students may use cell phones during passing time and at lunch while school is in session. All phones must be put away, and ringers silenced before entering the classroom. Phones in use or view during class time may be confiscated by staff (this includes using phones to listen to music). Students who refuse to comply will be subject to additional school consequences. Additionally, students are not allowed to have headphones/earbuds on or in their ears during class. At North Central Middle School the following steps will be used to enforce the policy:

    1. At the beginning of class all teachers/staff will say “secure your phones”

    2. Students should have their phones put away and out of sight.

    3. If the phone is out or being used, the teacher will confiscate the phone and deliver it to the main office where it will be secured until the end of the day.

    4. If a student is refusing to give up his/her cell phone a counselor or administrator will be called and escort the student to the office where the phone will be secured.

    Consequences For Policy Infractions:

    • 1st Offense: Loss of phone, earbuds, and/or headphones for day; Student signs documentation sheet to receive their device(s) at end of their school day and acknowledge their violation of the policy

    • 2nd Offense: Loss of phone, earbuds, and/or headphones for day; Student signs documentation sheet to receive their device(s) at end of their school day and acknowledge their violation of the policy and that an additional infraction will result in parent/guardian(s) being contacted

    • 3rd Offense: Loss of phone, earbuds, and/or headphones for day; Parent/Guardian contacted by administration; Student signs documentation sheet to receive their device(s) at end of their school day and to acknowledge a parent/guardian meeting will be held if another infraction occurs

    • 4th Offense: Loss of phone, earbuds, and/or headphones until parent/guardian meeting. Administration contacts parents/guardians; Student signs documentation sheet to acknowledge the policy infraction

    • 5th Offense: Technology Plan Implemented. Administration contacts parents/guardians; Technology plan created during the parent/guardian meeting.
