Aug. '24 Shout Outs!A monthly update on GSAs & the PSUSD LGBTQ Alliance

Dear school leaders, GSA advisors, teachers, families, and students

It's that time of year... back to school! As we begin the 2024-2025 school year, let's set our sights on making and maintaining the welcoming spaces at our school sites that our LGBTQ+ students, staff, and families deserve.

This issue of the Shout Outs Newsletter is full of great resources you can use to do just that! Read on to learn about creating gender inclusive classrooms and see spotlights on a variety of supportive community organizations in the Coachella Valley. You will also find the LGBTQ Alliance's year-at-a-glance calendar, helpful glossaries of terms, updates on GSA clubs, a staff resource library, and more!

Creating Gender Inclusive Classrooms Creating Gender Inclusive Classrooms

As you begin this new school year, consider the language and procedures you use in your classroom and school. Are you asking students to line up or take turns based on a "boy, girl, boy, girl" pattern, or are you using gender neutral language to accomplish this goal? Do you address your class as "you guys" or are you including everyone by using language such as "hey everyone!"? On the whole, are you creating gendered spaces, or are you creating spaces in which students across the gender spectrum feel seen and safe?

This resource from the Illinois School Psychologist Association offers some great tips on creating and maintaining a gender inclusive classroom!
