Newtown Public Schools
Weekly Update - September 22, 2026
Message from the Superintendent
Dear Newtown Families, Faculty and Staff,
Last week, I presented a comprehensive overview of the rationale for building a new middle school to the Legislative Council. The presentation traced the work that brought us to this point, including the condition of our school facilities, long-term enrollment projections, building capacity, and the options considered by the Board of Ed's Ad Hoc Building Facilities Planning Committee.
Newtown Middle School Facilities Presentation 9.16.26
An important part of that discussion was the capacity challenge we are already experiencing at some of our elementary schools. As you may recall, last year, we moved our PAL program from Middle Gate to Sandy Hook and our preschool program from Sandy Hook to Reed in order to create much-needed space at Middle Gate. But Middle Gate is not the only elementary school in need of space. Several of our elementary schools are already operating at or near their planning capacity, and enrollment projections indicate that those pressures will continue in the years ahead.
For that reason, the Board of Education's recommendation is not simply about replacing Newtown Middle School. The proposal being explored is a new Grades 6–8 middle school, which would allow Reed Intermediate School to serve Grades 4–5 and our elementary schools to transition to K–3. This represents a change from our current grade configuration, and I recognize that this may be the first time some families are hearing about what that change could look like. Please know that, if this project moves forward, there will be many conversations along the way about what a transition to a new grade configuration would mean for our students, families, and schools. Even if we were able to meet the ambitious goal of an April 2027 referendum and receive state grant authorization in 2028, we would still be several years away from opening a new school. Based on a typical design, approval, and construction timeline, a new middle school would likely not open before approximately 2031.
The Legislative Council has now authorized the formation of a Building Committee, which will begin the detailed work necessary to evaluate potential sites, develop educational specifications and schematic designs, and establish reliable project costs. There is simply no way to provide our community with the detailed information it needs to fully evaluate this project until that work is done. The Building Committee will help answer the questions people understandably have: Where could a new school be located? What would it look like? How large would it need to be? What would it cost? And what portion of those costs might be eligible for state reimbursement?
Once that work unfolds, there will be many details to work through and many opportunities to keep our community informed before a fully developed proposal is ultimately brought to voters for consideration. Forming the Building Committee does not commit the Town to building a new school—it allows the work necessary to develop that proposal to begin.
Interested in serving? The Legislative Council Chair is currently seeking Newtown residents interested in serving on the Building Committee. Residents with experience in construction/engineering, project management, community planning, environmental engineering, program planning, or education are particularly encouraged to apply. Those interested should send a letter of interest and résumé to Laura Miller at miller4newtown@gmail.com.
I will do my best, as always, to keep you informed as the work on this progresses. Stay tuned!
Warm regards,
Anne

Each year, Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated from September 15 through October 15, honoring the rich histories, cultures, traditions, and contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans.
Throughout the month, we celebrate the many individuals and communities whose achievements, stories, art, music, traditions, and leadership have helped shape our nation. It is also an opportunity for our students to learn more about the diverse cultures and experiences that enrich our schools and communities.
As we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, we encourage our students to learn, explore, and appreciate the many cultures, traditions, and stories represented throughout our community. Together, we celebrate the diversity that makes our schools such special places to learn, grow, and connect.
Get Ready for a STEM-tastic Day!
Looking for some family fun with a STEM twist? Region 15 (Southbury/Middlebury) is hosting STEM-A-PALOOZA on September 26 at Pomperaug High School! Families can explore more than 50 hands-on STEM activities, with food also available for purchase.
It’s sure to be a STEM-tastic day filled with discovery, creativity, and fun for the whole family!
Keeping Students Safe: New Bus Stop-Arm Safety Program
To prevent dangerous driving and improve enforcement, all school buses in our district will now be equipped with safety cameras that automatically record vehicles that illegally pass when the stop-arm is extended. Each potential violation is reviewed by local law enforcement before a citation is issued.
Our priority is to reduce illegal bus passing. To that end, warnings will be issued to violators starting September 15. As of October 19 - coincidentally, the first day of National Bus Safety Week 2026 - tickets in the amount of $250 will be issued to anyone illegally passing a school bus.
For more information, you can now visit the Newtown Public Schools Bus Patrol Webpage or the Newtown Police Department's Page. There will you will find both general information, rationale for the program, important dates for the launch, bus safety laws for drivers as well as FAQs
As partners in student safety, we also ask that you take a few moments to talk to your child about safe school bus habits:
- Stay alert at the bus stop and avoid distractions
- Always wait for the driver’s signal before crossing the street
- Never walk behind the bus or in the driver’s blind spot
- Follow the driver’s instructions while boarding and riding
We’re grateful for your support in helping make our roads safer for students. Together, we can build a stronger culture of safety for every child who rides a school bus.
We'd Love to Hear From You! ✨

Staff Spotlight
Meet Kymberly Noone, NHS Art Department Chair 🎨
Hi, I’m Kymberly Noone, and I’m excited to introduce myself as the new Fine Arts Department Chair at Newtown High School!
I have been a high school art educator since 2011, beginning my teaching career in Danbury before joining Newtown Public Schools in 2020.
As a teaching artist, my goal is to create meaningful learning experiences that inspire students to be curious, creative, and confident lifelong learners. I believe the arts give students a unique opportunity to explore their ideas, discover their own voices, and develop skills that extend far beyond the classroom.
Outside of school, I’m a wife and a mom of four, so life is always busy and creative! In my new role, I look forward to working with our Fine Arts educators to expand access to the arts for all Newtown students and families and to continue building opportunities for students to discover their passions and grow through the arts.
I’m excited for what’s ahead and grateful to be part of the Newtown community!
Kymberly is pictured alongside her artwork, currently on display at Cosmic Coffee and Smoothie Bar in Newtown.
Student Highlights
Student Spotlight: Stephen Fitzgerald
We love celebrating the accomplishments of our students both in and outside of the classroom! Head O’Meadow third grader, Stephen Fitzgerald, recently performed with World Champion Tae Kwon Do of Brookfield at the Second Company Governor’s Horse Guard Fall Festival right here in Newtown.
The event was especially meaningful for Stephen and his family, as his mother, Melissa Sipos, serves as a Sergeant with the Second Company Governor’s Horse Guard. Melissa proudly watched Stephen take part in an impressive Tae Kwon Do demonstration, showcasing the skills he has developed through years of practice and dedication.
Stephen earned his black belt this past June at just 8 years old - an incredible accomplishment! Congratulations to Stephen on his hard work and commitment!
Breakfast with Mr. Moretti: Celebrating Our Summer Readers!
Summer reading paid off in a delicious way! Students who completed their summer reading goals were treated to a special Breakfast with the Principal to celebrate their hard work and love of reading. What a great way to recognize our dedicated readers and kick off another year of learning!

WCSU Basketball Team Gives Back at Head O'Meadow!
We were excited to welcome members of the Western Connecticut State University Men’s Basketball Team on Friday as part of WCSU’s Day of Giving! The players generously volunteered their time as guest readers in our classrooms and even hit the court to shoot some hoops with our students.
Thank you to the WCSU Men’s Basketball Team for spending the day with our students and making it such a fun and memorable experience!
National Art Honor Society - Art, Kindness & Community
This past weekend, our amazing National Art Honor Society (NAHS) students generously volunteered their time at several events throughout the community!
One of those events was a special fundraiser at Hatter’s Park in Danbury benefiting Vinny, a young boy battling brain cancer. Our NAHS students joined in the fun by having their faces painted while showing their support for Vinny and his family.
We are so proud of our students for sharing their time, creativity, and kindness to help make a difference in the lives of others! ❤️

International Dot Day Celebrations
Our student artists at Hawley Elementary School and MIddle Gate School celebrated International Dot Day by turning simple dots into creative works of art! Inspired by "The Dot" by Peter Reynolds and the idea that everyone can make their mark. Students explored color, pattern, shape, and imagination as they created their own unique dots.
We love seeing their creativity, confidence, and individuality shine through each one!

Nighthawks Home Game Schedule - Week of 9/22
*NEW PROGRAM* Book A Nighthawk!
'Book a Nighthawk' is a new program connecting NHS student-athletes with our elementary school students!
NHS student-athletes are taking their Nighthawk pride beyond the playing field and into our elementary classrooms! Through our Book a Nighthawk program, elementary teachers can invite a student-athlete to visit their classroom on designated Wednesdays or Fridays. Our Nighthawks will read with students, lead fun discussions, and answer questions about school, sports, teamwork, and goal setting. It’s a great way for our student-athletes to serve as positive role models while building connections with our youngest future Nighthawks!

HAWK BITES
NHS is proud to announce the return of Hawk Bites—our after-school nutritious snack program for student-athletes!
Designed to support our athletes before practices and games, Hawk Bites will operate in partnership with Chartwells and MySchoolBucks to provide convenient, healthy snack options. These quick, nutritious choices will help keep our athletes energized, focused, and ready to perform at their best.
We recognize that many of our student-athletes head directly from the school day to practice or competition without the opportunity to go home and refuel. Hawk Bites aims to bridge that gap by ensuring our Nighthawks have access to the fuel they need, when they need it most.
HAWK BITES DAYS
Tuesdays & Thursdays
Beginning Thursday, September 17

Orders must be placed the day before . Please see the Hawk Bites Order Form for available options and pricing.

Free ECG Screening Coming to Newtown!
The Newtown High School Athletic Department is teaming up with In A Heartbeat, a CT-based nonprofit organization, to host a free ECG screening event in the Newtown High School main gymnasium on October 22nd from 1:00 - 5:00 pm.
An ECG (electrocardiogram) is a way to measure the heart’s electrical activity and can detect abnormal heart rhythms (arrhythmias) that can increase the risk of sudden cardiac death. ECGs are quick, painless, and easy, and can save lives! These arrhythmias that the ECG detects are
missed with just a stethoscope and may not cause any symptoms, which is why these screenings are so important to keep children safe!
This free event is open to all Newtown Public Schools students (K-12). The event will be staffed with volunteer technicians who will answer any questions you may have, and parents will receive ECG results from In A Heartbeat within two weeks. The event is voluntary and pre-registration is encouraged. Click here to register your child for this screening.

Meal Charging & MySchoolBucks
At Newtown Public Schools, we want every student to have access to a nutritious meal each school day. In accordance with our Board-approved Meal Charging Policy, students will not be denied a meal because of an outstanding meal account balance.
Families are encouraged to regularly monitor and maintain their child’s meal account. MySchoolBucks provides a convenient and secure way to manage school meal purchases from anywhere.
Through the website or mobile app, families can:
- Add money to a student’s meal account
- Set up automatic payments
- Check account balances and review purchase history
- Receive notifications when an account balance is low
If you haven’t already, we encourage families to create a MySchoolBucks account at www.myschoolbucks.com or download the mobile app. Keeping track of your child’s account and maintaining a positive balance helps make mealtimes simple and seamless.
For additional information about the district’s Meal Charging Policy, please visit the Newtown Public Schools website or contact your child’s school.
Get Involved, Be Connected, Have a Voice - Join a Newtown PTA!
Our PTA (Parent-Teacher Association) is a group made up of parents, teachers, and sometimes community members who work together to support our schools. The primary goal of our PTAs is to build a strong connection between families and schools to create a positive learning environment for students. PTAs often organize activities and events that benefit students, such as fundraisers, family nights, and volunteer programs. These events help raise money for classroom supplies, field trips, or other school needs that may not be covered by the school budget.
In addition to fundraising, the PTA acts as a bridge between parents and school administrations. They advocate for students by addressing concerns or providing feedback to school leaders. PTAs also host meetings, or informational sessions to keep parents informed about important issues, such as curriculum changes, testing schedules, or educational policies. By fostering collaboration among parents, teachers, and administrators, our PTAs plays a crucial role in enriching the school community and supporting student success.
