Check out that smile! Students have been practicing skipping throughout the semester in the Action Based Learning Lab. Research suggests that this bilateral gross motor skill can enhance the development of the two hemispheres in the brain.

Outdoor Relaxation is Important Too!

For the month of May we are encouraging everyone to get outside, enjoy the outdoors, and be active. While staying active is important, so is relaxation. I can think of no better way to relax than sitting beside a good campfire.

Research demonstrates campfires can lower blood pressure, and greater lengths of time in front of those dancing flames increases the relaxation effect. Think back to the last time you were around a campfire. It seemed so simple, yet so hard to look away from, probably better described as mesmerizing actually.

Take advantage of these beautiful spring days and cool nights. Explore the outdoors. Grab a few sticks and a pack of matches. Empty your mind into the glowing embers of a small rip-roaring campfire. Feeling more on the energetic side? Forget the matches and just rub the sticks together. I'll say that counts as activity for the day. And always remember to practice good fire safety.

Start Your Day with H2O

It's no secret that water is an essential nutrient that all our organs and tissues depend on to function. It’s also not a secret that the first thing most of us do in the morning is head to the kitchen for that freshly brewed cup of coffee. Did you know there are some amazing benefits to drinking water first thing in the morning? Our bodies are 60% made up of water and use it to regulate body temperature, transport nutrients among other vital biological functions. However, we also lose water naturally every day when we sweat, pee, breathe and even sleep. When we sleep, we are constantly losing water from our bodies with no replenishment. That’s why there have been many positive links found to drinking water first thing in the morning. Studies have shown that water in the morning can not only rehydrate the body, but also increase energy levels, boost metabolism, flush toxins out of the body, aid in digestive health and many other things! It’s amazing what a little H2O can do for your body at 6:00 AM. Next time you wake up craving that morning cup of coffee, sneak in an 8 oz. of water just before. Set a glass/bottle of water by your nightstand before you go to bed and drink it as soon as you wake up. After a few days, you might see a world of difference in the way you feel.
