Feedback Sought: New K-12 Science Standards

Please consider following the link below to review the proposed K-12 Science standards. NCDPI (North Carolina Department of Public Instruction) is seeking stakeholder feedback and there is a link to complete a survey as well.

NCDPI K-12 Science Standards

Pre Test, Post Test and Mastery Assessments

Something new at MES this year is the use of pre and post assessments as well as mastery assessments. We are using this model based off of a multitude of research completed by John Hattie. John Hattie looks at different instructional practices that have the greatest positive impact on student achievement. One of those is pre and post assessments. Teachers are using pre test to gain an understanding of what students know about the standard or standards being studied. Some students are showing they are competent in the standard and are able to move ahead to the post test. If the student shows they are competent in the standard on the post test, then the student will receive a differentiated assignment to deepen their knowledge and challenge them appropriately. It is important to realize that both pre and post tests are NOT grades that are recorded for the student in PowerSchool. It is truly information that is used by the teacher to reflect and prioritize instruction for the students in the classroom. The grade that is recorded is the Mastery Assessment. Generally, this is the culminating assessment once instruction and practice has happened in the classroom. We are working together as an instructional team to reflect, improve instruction and appropriately challenge students.

Sunday, November 27th ALL CALL

Good evening Morehead Elementary School families! I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving and spent it doing things that you enjoy! We are ready to welcome everyone back to MES Monday, November 28th when the building opens at 7:30 am. Please remember that students should not be dropped off prior to 7:30. Staff will not be ready to supervise students until the 7:30 bell. Our tardy bell rings at 8 am. Temperatures have definitely been cooler in the mornings, so please encourage your child to dress appropriately and wear a jacket. Most mornings, students will still be outside prior to the 7:50 bell. I will make day to day decisions on morning recess depending on the weather and any weather alerts. If your child is missing a sweatshirt, jacket, lunch box or water bottle, then please have them check the lost and found inside the front lobby. Be sure to look for this week’s S’more for links, pictures and more information on what is happening at MES. The S’more is published each week on our MES Facebook Page after the call. It will also populate on our school webpage. Thank you for another wonderful week! We look forward to seeing everyone Monday morning.

Lost and Found

If your child is missing a jacket, sweatshirt, water bottle or lunch box, then please ask them to look in the main hallway and at the office. We have a growing collection of items waiting to be claimed.

Coming soon...

MES has purchased a traverse climbing wall! We hope to have this installed just after the first of the new year for all students to enjoy during their PE time. This is a big purchase and we are excited to bring new opportunities to MES.

Tickets! Tickets! Earn your tickets!

We've noticed that we need to praise our students for their behavior more often. Students receiving a ticket will write their name on the back and deposit it in the bucket either in the cafeteria or the office. I will randomly draw names from the bucket for some prizes that we have available. Names will not be dumped from the bucket, so the more tickets earned, the better the chance of having your name drawn for a prize.

The first week of tickets has been met with great excitement! Students are loving earning a ticket and waiting for the random drawings. We will continue with this process for the 2nd quarter.

MES PAC (Parent Advisory Committee)

Did you know that there is a Parent Advisory Committee?

There is a group of parents committed to MES and making it the BEST school around. We meet once a month. This is an open meeting and you are welcome to provide feedback, ask questions, read the minutes, etc. In the meeting minutes, you will find the members of the MES PAC, items discussed this month and future meeting dates.

Our next meeting date is Monday, December 19th at 1:30 pm.

Do you have something to share with PAC? Complete this form, MES PAC.

What is WIN time?

WIN stands for "What I Need".

WIN Time began last week and will be a normal part of our daily schedule at this time. All students will attend 45 minute blocks where they will receive what they need for math and reading based on their individual data. We have groups ready to serve students at all levels. Our groups are designed to fill learning gaps, aide in skill development, pre-teach concepts to come in the week, on grade level practice and enrichment.

We will continue to monitor student data and progress as the groups may need to change. No one is locked into a particular group. Once a goal is met, then we reassess. We are focused and ready to help students succeed and excel at all levels.

Get involved at MES!

PTO is always looking for additional participants to help support them as they support our school. Please visit the PTO Facebook page to contact them. Here is the link to their page.
