Dear Hartford School District Learning Community,

First and foremost, THANK YOU for your support of our schools!

As someone who was experiencing the annual town events for the first time, including the public forums, "Budget and Candidate Night," and Town Meeting Day, I got yet another glimpse into how special and welcoming the Hartford community is; it has been an incredibly heartening experience, and I am grateful and feel fortunate to have been a part of it.

This edition of the Hartford School District is dedicated to all of you. I hope you enjoy the content, which features the impressive and amazing accomplishments of our students, educators, and administrators, and the joy that we experience together and in our collaboration and partnership with all of you to support our learners.

I am so proud to work in the Hartford School District and of the work of everyone who contributes to the healthy functioning of our daily work together. From our partners like the Abbey Group, Butler's Bus Service, and support from the Town of Hartford's incredibly helpful departments, to our support staff, educators, custodial and maintenance staff, and district office, it truly is collaborative, coordinated effort that has many parts that combine to realize the beautiful vision that is the education of the young people in our community.

Please do not ever hesitate to be in touch if you have any questions or would like to learn more about any of the content that is featured in this edition of the newsletter or in any prior communications.

THANK YOU ALL!

Warmly,

Caty Sutton

Grades 3/4 Writing Celebration! Grades 3/4 Writing Celebration!

Congratulations, Mrs. Raney and 3/4 Students!

Last Friday, Mrs. Raney hosted a special Writers' Celebration showcasing the creativity and hard work of her talented 3rd and 4th-grade students!

Throughout the year, the young authors have been crafting wonderful pieces of writing—both narrative and informational—that reflect their creativity, knowledge, and growth as writers. Some of their work has been written on demand, demonstrating their ability to think and write on the spot, while other pieces have gone through the full writing process, including peer reviews and revisions, to bring their ideas to life in a polished way.

This celebration was an opportunity for students to proudly share their writing with family, friends, and the community.

Another Successful "Hurricane Day" at HHS!

Did we really just provide breakfast for 550 people?

The short answer is YES! This morning we started "Hurricane Day" with our all-school breakfast. This has become an annual tradition and one of the things that makes HHS unique. We eat together, we feed each other, and in doing so we sometimes have the chance to serve each other. The energy in the building is incredibly positive and the sense of community is amazing.

"Hurricane Day" is a day that combines a focus on the individual through students' Personalized Learning Plans and the community - breakfast, an all-school meeting, and activities that bring us together throughout the day. This morning was just the most recent example of this amazing day.

Building a Home, and Earning IRCs!

Building Trades students have made great progress on the house this winter, despite the cold temperatures. They've continued work on electrical, rough plumbing, insulation board, sheetrock, and tile backer board. On very cold days, they spent time in the HACTC shop practicing cabinet work and other projects to prepare for installing cabinets in the house this spring. Building Trades level II also recently hosted students from Ottauquechee School, helping them build bat houses.

Additionally, both Building Trades levels have been preparing for NCCER (National Center for Construction Education and Research) basic core carpentry credentialling exams. This industry-recognized credential will help show employers that our students have the skills needed to excel in entry-level construction positions.

STEM STEM

Exploring Careers, and Honing Engineering and Design Skills!

In Introduction to Engineering Design, students have been working on a project with the open-ended prompt "design a protective case." While honing their 3D modeling skills, students have created case designs for a variety of objects, including a cell phone, Magic the Gathering cards, headphones, and sharp tools.

Students in Principles of Engineering have been focused on robotics as they build robots inspired by nature to take part in playing a symphony. Designs included a frog-sound percussion robot, an owl-inspired drum player, a cell phone-waving synthesizer player, and kalimba-playing robots. This project helped students build their Python programming skills and practice working as a team, learning how to break up work to play to each member's strengths.

Both classes also took a field trip to BETA Technologies, where they learned about careers, toured the aerospace manufacturing facility, and learned how to make epoxy coasters with carbon fiber.

Opportunity: A Screening of "The Ride Ahead" on March 28!

Please join Project SEARCH and DHMC for a special screening of THE RIDE AHEAD, a documentary by Emmy-Award winning father-son filmmaker duo Dan and Samuel Habib, on March 28 from 4:30-7pm, at DHMC Lebanon in Auditorium E and F.

THE RIDE AHEAD follows Samuel Habib, a typical 21-year-old, itching to move out, start a career, and find love. But no one tells you how to be an adult, let alone an adult with a disability. Samuel is determined to avoid the statistical realities: unemployment, isolation, institutionalization. He seeks out wisdom through conversations with disabled mentors: comedian Maysoon Zayid, Americans with Disabilities Act legends Judy Heumann and Bob Williams; Tony-winning wheelchair-using pioneer Ali Stroker; hip-hop artist Keith Jones; autistic, queer activist Lydia X.Z. Brown; and marathon runner and disability activist Andrew Peterson.

Following the screening, Dan and Samuel Habib will conduct a post-film discussion with the audience. The screening and discussion is free and open to the public.

Please reach out to Project SEARCH at project.search@hitchcock.org or call 603-650-6439 if you require any accommodations. The film will be shown with open captions and is in a wheelchair accessible venue.

March is Women's History Month!

Phenomenal Woman

By Maya Angelou

Pretty women wonder where my secret lies.

I’m not cute or built to suit a fashion model’s size

But when I start to tell them,

They think I’m telling lies.

I say,

It’s in the reach of my arms,

The span of my hips,

The stride of my step,

The curl of my lips.

I’m a woman

Phenomenally.

Phenomenal woman,

That’s me.

I walk into a room

Just as cool as you please,

And to a man,

The fellows stand or

Fall down on their knees.

Then they swarm around me,

A hive of honey bees.

I say,

It’s the fire in my eyes,

And the flash of my teeth,

The swing in my waist,

And the joy in my feet.

I’m a woman

Phenomenally.

Phenomenal woman,

That’s me.

Men themselves have wondered

What they see in me.

They try so much

But they can’t touch

My inner mystery.

When I try to show them,

They say they still can’t see.

I say,

It’s in the arch of my back,

The sun of my smile,

The ride of my breasts,

The grace of my style.

I’m a woman

Phenomenally.

Phenomenal woman,

That’s me.

Now you understand

Just why my head’s not bowed.

I don’t shout or jump about

Or have to talk real loud.

When you see me passing,

It ought to make you proud.

I say,

It’s in the click of my heels,

The bend of my hair,

the palm of my hand,

The need for my care.

’Cause I’m a woman

Phenomenally.

Phenomenal woman,

That’s me.

Statement from the HSD Board RE: PCBs Statement from the HSD Board RE: PCBs

As the community is aware, we have been carefully monitoring the level of PCBs throughout the district and very recently have discovered that the PCB levels at the high school require more attention, and the scope of the project has significantly increased.

Based on the information that was provided by Buildings & Grounds Director Jonathan Garthwaite at a special board meeting held on February 27 at 7 PM, and again on March 3, at the Hartford School and Town meeting, at which time the Director presented the latest findings in the developments of the PCB remediation and abatement analysis, the board has directed that the following actions be taken:

  • District Building & Grounds Director will work with contractors to conduct an in-depth and thorough bulk sampling of affected areas, which will help to fully understand the depth and scope of this project and assist the board in making timely and critical decisions concerning the direction and costs that will be involved in this project.

  • District Director of Finance, Jacob Vezina, will investigate funding sources that will look beyond what might be recovered through a litigation process.

  • Interim Superintendent, Caty Sutton, will confer with legal counsel to discuss other pending litigation action against Monsanto to help determine how the district will proceed and will explore how the Administration will move forward with planning academic and co-curricular programming.

Our guiding priority is that our teaching and learning community is safe and that we maintain our students’ academic and co-curricular programming with minimal disruption. This is an ever-evolving situation that we are assessing and planning for in real time. We will continue to update the community with the latest developments in this evolving situation.
