April 2026

Mentor MinuteApril 2026

The Mentor Minute is designed to support lead mentors and mentors in VBCPS. Every issue of the Mentor Minute explores how the Four Pillars of Mentoring can be used in meaningful, responsive ways to support new educators. The Mentoring Scope and Sequence is our map, outlining when common challenges arise and offering mentors a starting point for timely, strategic conversations. Together, the Four Pillars and the Scope and Sequence help mentors anticipate needs, spark the right conversations at the right time, and ensure support feels personal, practical, and possible.

🔍This Month's Focus: Refining Practice & Recognizing Growth 🔎 🔍This Month's Focus: Refining Practice & Recognizing Growth 🔎

April is a time when new teachers begin to see the full picture of their year. With the end in sight, they are reflecting on how far they’ve come and making targeted adjustments to finish strong.

At this point, new educators are more capable and more aware of what's working, where students still need support, and how their teaching has evolved. What they need most now is support in recognizing their growth and making intentional adjustments that strengthen their impact.

As a mentor, your role shifts again. You are maintaining momentum. You are helping your mentee refine what is working, respond to what is emerging, and recognize the progress they have made.

As we move into April, the Four Pillars focus on:

  • Guide: Help your mentee identify one small adjustment that will make the biggest difference
  • Share: Offer one targeted strategy based on current student needs
  • Reflect: Help your mentee recognize their growth and their students’ growth
  • Connect: Celebrate progress and reinforce their identity as a growing educator

🎯Strategies to Try🎯 🎯Strategies to Try🎯

This section offers ready-to-use strategies for engaging with your mentee this month. Grounded in the Four Pillars of Mentor Support, these strategies support your mentee in recognizing growth and making small, meaningful adjustments as the year comes to a close.

1. Reflective Support: Naming Growth and Looking Ahead

By April, new teachers have accumulated months of experience. Without intentional reflection, much of that growth can go unnoticed. This mentoring move helps new educators recognize their progress and look ahead.

  • Guide: Help your mentee identify specific evidence of growth using a prompt like, "What feels easier now than it did at the beginning of the year?"

  • Share: Offer a brief story from your own experience that highlights how growth becomes visible over time. This helps normalize the gradual nature of professional growth.

  • Reflect: Invite your mentee to make meaning:

    • What do you think contributed most to that change?

  • Connect: Affirm their progress and identity by saying something like, “The way you’re reflecting on your practice shows how much you’ve grown as an educator."

2. Responsive Support: Making Small Moves That Matter

April is a time for small, intentional adjustments that strengthen learning and classroom stability.

  • Guide: Help your mentee identify one area for refinement:

      • Where are students still struggling or losing focus?
      • What will students be doing if this adjustment is working?

  • Share: Offer one targeted, timely strategy that strengthens what is already working.

  • Reflect: Invite your mentee to examine their current impact on student learning:

    • What are you noticing about how students are responding right now?

  • Connect: Reinforce their growing expertise with an acknowledgment like, “The adjustments you’re making now reflect the kind of responsiveness that experienced teachers develop over time.”

When you use the Four Pillars to help new educators recognize their growth and refine their practice, you provide the steady support they need to finish the year strong.
