LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Hope to see you tonight at our SUN “Play and Create” Night! 5-7 pm in the cafeteria. Eat and have fun together, all ages welcome (under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian).
And, coming up next Friday May 8th is our Arleta Dolphin Dash! We rely so much on the funds from the Dolphin Dash to provide field trips, assemblies, and equipment for students, so I hope you’ll consider donating towards your child’s run. We’d love to have help between 12-1 or 1-2. It’s lots of fun to watch kids run! Scroll down for details and link to sign up.
Child Safety Before and After School
Arleta staff do not supervise the playground before or after school. The YMCA and SUN have a contract to use this space; but only supervise the children enrolled in their programs. Please make sure your child is safe by having them head home immediately after school, or by staying with them to supervise. If you are staying to supervise your child, please make sure you introduce yourself to YMCA and SUN staff to build community.
Update on Classroom Configurations for Next Year
Thank you for your continued partnership as we navigate ongoing budget challenges together. As I’ve shared previously, our district has staffed our school based on projected enrollment. Ideally, grade-level cohorts are around 50 students (about 20–25 per class). At this time, our rising 2nd and 4th grade groups are projected below 30 students, which impacts both staffing and how our classes are structured. With declining enrollment, we will have one fewer classroom next year and are planning to have some multi-grade classrooms, most likely in 1st/2nd and 4th/5th grades.
Across the district, this shift to multi-grade classrooms is being used to manage costs while maintaining a commitment to high-quality, grade-level instruction. Research shows that well-implemented blended classrooms can support strong academic outcomes and offer benefits like collaboration, mentorship, and social-emotional growth—especially in younger grades.
At Arleta, many of our teachers have experience teaching blended classrooms and all are committed to supporting a wide range of learners. As we plan for next year, we are designing structures that support student needs. In some cases, students may “walk to” specific instructional blocks, likely math and foundational skills, to ensure instruction is aligned with both grade-level standards and developmental needs.
In past years, we have sometimes used blended classes to support continuity, including looping with the same teacher for two years. Due to ongoing funding uncertainty, classroom configurations are now driven primarily by enrollment and staffing, and we may not be able to maintain multi-year placements.
No matter the configuration, our commitment remains the same: inclusive classrooms and strong learning for every child. Thank you for being such an important part of our Arleta community, and please reach out with any questions.
Warmly,
Lisa Hawking, Principal

TEACH YOUR CHILD ABOUT THE ISLAMIC GOLDEN AGE NATIONAL ARABIC AMERICAN HERITAGE MONTH!
By the 600s the Islamic empire stretched from Spain to the borders of India, with its capitol in Baghdad. This empire fused Persian, Greek, Indian, and Egyptian cultures and scholarship, creating fertile ground for technological, scientific, and artistic advancements. This Islamic Golden Age lasted from the 600s-1200s during which time caliphs invited scientists and scholars from all countries and religions to share and learn together. The Golden Age ended when invasions from the Mongol Empire devastated many of the region's intellectual centers along with shifting trade routes that decreased contact.
Learn about several famous scientists and inventors from the time period below, and watch a brief video on making geometric Moroccan tiles!
Muhammad ibn Mūsā al-Khwārizmī
Mathematician, Astronomer, and father of Algebra
He was born around 780 in Khwārizm (now Khiva, Uzbekistan) and died around 850. He worked most of his life as a scholar in the House of Wisdom in Baghdad. His major contributions to mathematics, astronomy, astrology, geography and cartography provided foundations for later and even more widespread innovation in Algebra, trigonometry, and his other areas of interest. His systematic and logical approach to solving linear and quadratic equations gave shape to the discipline of Algebra, a word that is derived from the name of his 830 book on the subject, "The Compendious Book on Calculation by Completion and Balancing." Al-Khwārizmī's second major work "The Book of Addition and Subtraction According to the Hindu Calculation" introduced the concept of zero to the Western world. (Taken from New World Encyclopedia.)
The Banū Mūsā Brothers
Mechanics
The three brothers, Muhammad, Ahmad, and al-Hasan, were born around 873. Their father was a highwayman in his youth but turned into a prolific astronomer. After his death, the three brothers came under the protection of the Caliph al-Ma'mun who recognized their genius early. They were tutored in Greek mathematical works. In 850 BCE they published their book, "The Book of Ingenious Devices" which included an early gas mask, hot and cold water taps, self-filling lamp, a fountain and other hydraulic devices, a primitive crankshaft (5 centuries before it was developed in Europe), and a hundred more. In a break from previous ancient texts, they focused on the mechanics and engineering of the devices, rather than theory and epistemology. Some devices in the book are still used today. They were also the first to accurately measure the length of a year and calculated the circumference of the earth at 24,000 miles (we know it to be 24,902 miles). (Information taken from the Smithsonian, Atlas Obscura, and Encyclopedia.com.)
Al-Hasan Ibn al-Haytham
One of the first modern physicists
Ibn al-Haytham was born in 965 in Basra. Today he is considered the "Father of modern Optics". He was an early proponent for seeking experimental proof for theories and carefully designed his experiments. While under house arrest by a tyrannical caliph, he wrote "Kitab Al Manazer" or "Book of Optics". In the book, he disproved the prevailing theory that light rays come out of eyes, and proved that people see objects by light entering the eye. He proved that light rays travel in straight line. He studied lenses, and was the first to show that convex lenses magnify images. By studying light moving through different media, he discovered the laws of refraction. He also carried out the first experiments on using diffraction to separate white light into colors. He scientifically described shadows, eclipses, and rainbows. He is known for the earliest use of camera obscuras. He wrote over 200 works, of which some 50 survive today. He contributed to astronomy, number theory, and eye surgery. He died in Cairo, in 1040. (Information taken from the Annals of Saudi Medicine).
Abu Al Qasim al Zahrawi
Physician
Al Zahrawi is considered the father of modern surgery. He was born in 936 near Córdaba, Spain, under caliph Abd al-Rahmān III al-Nāsir. Around the year 1000, he wrote, Al-Taṣrīf li-man ʿajaz ʿan al-taʾālīf, or "The Clearance of Medical Science For Those Who Cannot Compile It", a 30 volume medical text. It contains the earliest known description of hemophilia and ectopic pregnancy, instruments he invented for internal ear examination, removing objects from the throat, inspecting the urethra, the first surgical scissors, the first obstetric forceps, and several dental devices. As a historical document, it contains drawings of more than 200 instruments. He is credited with the performance of the first thyroidectomy and Caesarean surgeries. He fully describes tonsillectomy and tracheotomies, cauterization to treat skin tumors and abscesses, internal stitches using catgut, the revision of the temporal artery to relieve certain types of headaches, and more. His text became the leading textbook on surgery in Europe for the next 500 years.

Central Library is transforming into a space for poetic resistance. Marcelo Fontana and Wave Contemporary invite the viewer to see hope as an active power rather than a passive wish. Eighteen artists will create small and shareable acts of hope displayed in the Collins Gallery. The title for the exhibition, Invite Hope, comes from a Maya Angelou quote: “Hope and fear cannot occupy the same space. Invite one to stay.”
The Collins Gallery, at the top floor of the Central Library, is used for exhibits created by library personnel or by community members in cooperation with library personnel. Use of space by a community organization does not constitute an endorsement of the organization's beliefs by the library.

PORTLAND YOUTH PHILHARMONIC'S LAST CONCERT OF THE SEASON - MAY 3
Portland Youth Philharmonic ends its 102nd season on May 3rd with its Firebird Finale at 4pm. with music that explores identity, reinvention, and imagination. Dvořák’s "My Homeland Overture" brings warmth and lyrical charm, while Aaron Copland’s "El Salón México" offers a colorful, folkloric portrait of a Mexico City dance hall. Chosen in honor of Copland’s 125th birthday, it reflects the season’s recurring theme of place and cultural exchange. Jessie Montgomery’s "Starburst for string orchestra" is a brief but exhilarating wok that lives up to its name - energetic and vibrant, capturing the feeling of rapid creation and expansion through bursts of rhythm and brilliance. Stravinsky’s Suite from "The Firebird" (1919) adds theatrical fire and wonder - a perfect metaphor for what PYP strives to be: fearless, transformative, and full of life. Click here for tickets.

The map has more than 100 community joy spots throughout the city. All of these projects created by homeowners exist to bring a bit of whimsy and inspiration to the community.
These displays are viewable from front yards, curbside gardens, alleyways, side yards and sides of buildings.
The map shows a description, image and the location of each display. There’s also Instagram handles so you can follow your favorite Joy Map creators.
All locations on the map are free to enjoy, but you may want to bring quarters for the Super Awesome Prizes vending machine or pay for a pottery piece at the Poetry Pottery Box. View the map.
