From Your President...
Hello Members and Potential Members,
Happy Black History Month! Let's take a moment to honor the legacy, resilience, and contributions of Black leaders, educators, and students, both past and present. This month is both a celebration and a call to action: to continue the work of equity, justice, and belonging in our schools and communities. Thank you to the HSD Task Force as they continue to create and refine advisory lessons to address the needs of our students and educators by interrupting hate speech through the Not At My School initiative.
At the same time, we must remain clear about our responsibility to ensure all students feel safe, supported, and protected at school. HEA is calling on the School Board to consider adopting the policy language we shared in December, which would provide clear guidance and protocols to protect immigrant students and families and ensure staff respond with care and consistency.
February 2–6 is also School Counselor Appreciation Week, with the theme School Counselors Amplify Student Success. Our school counselors play a vital role in student well-being, academic success, and career planning. While their work often happens quietly, its impact is profound. Thank you for the care, expertise, and dedication you bring to students every day.
Lastly, it is an important reminder that our contract is only as strong as the members who uphold it. Too often, concerns go unaddressed because educators worry about rocking the boat, but our contract works most effectively when members raise concerns early and follow our established representation process to resolve issues at the appropriate level. When we know our rights, reach out for support, and work together, we protect one another by turning words on a page into real protections in practice. When we truly practice and implement our union goals and values, we are stronger together!
In Solidarity,
Mary Kay Babcock,
HEA President | she/her/ella

WEINGARTEN RIGHTS and REPRESENTATION
Hey! Do you have a minute? Uh Oh~ Do you know your Weingarten Rights?
Weingarten rights are central to your ability to have an advocate in the room if the tone starts to change. The Public Employee Collective Bargaining Act or PECBA became effective in October 1973, the PECBA contains the laws governing employment relations for public employees like you.
“IF THIS DISCUSSION COULD IN ANY WAY LEAD TO MY BEING DISCIPLINED, TERMINATED, OR AFFECT MY PERSONAL WORKING CONDITIONS, I RESPECTFULLY REQUEST THAT MY UNION REPRESENTATIVE BE PRESENT AT THE MEETING. WITHOUT UNION REPRESENTATION, I CHOOSE NOT TO ANSWER ANY QUESTIONS.” - THIS IS MY RIGHT UNDER THE 1975 U.S. SUPREME COURT WEINGARTEN DECISION
