Assistive Technology Partnerships: Maury, Montgomery, Crockett, and Bedford County
One of our newest partners, the Assistive Technology Project (ATP) is making connections and establishing partnerships with several districts across the state. These districts are making substantial changes and improvements for their students as described below:
- Bedford County: The ATP team successfully coached members in Bedford County on identifying appropriate assistive technology tools to best support a student. A solution was quickly identified through tools from ATP's Lending Library. Through the newly provided assistive technology, the student’s independence and efficiency with coursework significantly increased such that the student no longer needs assistance from staff. This AT solution will be a long-term aid for him.
- Crockett County: In partnership with another network partner, TRIAD Behavior, ATP supported the education team of a student in Crockett County by increasing their knowledge of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) implementation. While this is still in the early phases, the implementation plan has been approved by the team and the student now has AAC available in the educational setting.
- Maury County: A Maury County school speech-language pathologist (SLP) is being coached by one of ATP's communication specialists. Through trials of switch access for a student, the school is ensuring the student has a "voice" and increased access to communication. While the team still considering different AAC options for this student, the SLP feels much more confident in her abilities and knowledge of AAC and AT.
- Montgomery County: ATP's specialists are working collaboratively with Montgomery County's district administration and AT staff to redesign and expand their AT service delivery model. This partnership includes staff-training activities and assistance developing a handbook that includes individualized policies, procedures, forms, and protocols. The handbook will help guide the district’s educational teams as they both explore and consider AT needs for their students and ensure consistency across staff with AT implementation.
