Shoreham Elementary School
"You Belong Here"
Principal's Update
SES Community ,
This has been a busy week. All of our students had an opportunity to learn about fire safety with Lieutenant Littlefield . Students were very excited to explore and honk the horn on one of the Shoreham Fire Trucks ! Each student received a new backpack with lots of goodies in it for them to remember fire safety.
We also had our open house this week which was well attended. It was great to watch students share their work and learning with family members. Our building was humming with adults and students making connections around student learning.
Lastly, we ended the week with our all school assembly. Ms. Adams used this time to celebrate students and their reading milestones . She also shared with them sign language . It was a great assembly to celebrate student growth !
Lastly, I want to remind you that picture day is on Tuesday and our parent community coffee is on Wednesday morning.
Best,
Lashawn Whitmore-Sells

Spanish Class
¡Hola, familias!
In Spanish class, students have been reviewing how to answer ¿Cómo estás? (“How are you?”) and how to express their likes and dislikes in Spanish using me gusta and no me gusta. We’ve also been practicing the “Super 7 Verbs” — some of the most important verbs that help us communicate in meaningful ways!
As part of our cultural learning, students have been celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month and exploring geography by identifying and locating the 21 Spanish-speaking countries around the world. Ask your child if they can sing the countries song for you — México, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panamá…
We’re having a wonderful time expanding our vocabulary, building confidence in speaking Spanish, and discovering more about the diverse Spanish-speaking world!

Library Update
Today, Ms. Abby led our all-school assembly and she celebrated some of the library accomplishments students achieved in the first 6 weeks of school.
This year students have borrowed 701 books (in the first 6 weeks of school). Last year they only borrowed 263 books during the same time period. What a celebration! This means students are not only picking out books that interest them, but remembering to bring them back to school.
4/5 borrowed 197 books
2/3 borrowed 228 books
and
K/1 borrowed 276 books
What a celebration! In addition, the 4/5 class has been earning points for different library activities- borrowing and returning books, reading for 15 minutes during library class, or giving / writing a book talk to tell about a book they've finished. Doing these activities, these students exceeded their goal of 475 points over six weeks. They earned 487!
4/5 has an ambitious new goal for the next 6 weeks: 530 points. Please encourage your 4th and 5th grader at home by helping them to remember to bring back their books.
Each class got a certificate which shows the number of books they borrowed as a class. In addition, 4th and 5th graders got special certificates based on how they earned their points. Reading Rockstars earned more than 50% of their points by reading in library class. Brilliant Bookworms earned more than 50% of their points by borrowing and returning books. The Legendary Library award was given to 3 students who balanced their points between several different options.
The assembly ended with some Kindergarteners and 1st graders teaching the sign language for "I Like Books" to the school.
District Update
School Attendance & Unexcused Absence Protocol:
Thank you for working with us during the first month of school to help your children build strong attendance routines. As a reminder, if your child has a planned absence for more than three days, you need to request the superintendent’s permission for that absence to be excused. Absences are generally considered excused only if a student is sick or their absence is approved by the Superintendent as an educational opportunity.
Our attendance protocol is based on the new Agency of Education guidance. We know these new rules may take some getting used to, and we appreciate your support as we work through them together. Please view the full protocol here and reach out to your principal or the superintendent’s office with any questions.
NEASC//IB Visits to the Schools:
This week, we are excited to welcome visitors from the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC) and the International Baccalaureate (IB). Our guests will be colleagues from across the nation and the globe. They will be observing classrooms and schools throughout Addison Central School District. ACSD is proud to be the first U.S. public school district to pursue a joint accreditation with both organizations, a process that helps us grow and strengthen our work for students through. This district-wide accreditation process will support a cohesive, PK–12 approach to learning and aligns with our shared goals and priorities. We are grateful for your partnership as we take this exciting step together. If you want to learn more about the NEASC and IB accreditation process, please visit our webpage.
