Principal's Corner
What a great week at Boulevard! Our students are actively engaging in meaningful learning experiences that build strong foundations in both literacy and mathematics. Below is a snapshot of the learning happening this week.
📚Kindergarten Literacy Update 📚
In Kindergarten today, students were engaged in a whole-group read-aloud using a big book. During the lesson, students reviewed important story elements and worked to identify characteristics of fantasy text. Through guided discussion, students noticed that the animals in the story were talking to one another. By thinking about what can and cannot happen in real life, students determined that talking animals make the story a fantasy.
This type of discussion strengthens comprehension and helps students learn how to categorize different types of texts.
Standard:
RL.K.5 – Recognize common types of texts (e.g., storybooks, poems) and identify characteristics of each.
Parent Tip:
When reading at home, pause and ask your child:
“Could this really happen in real life?”
“Is this story real or make-believe? How do you know?”
Encouraging your child to explain their thinking builds comprehension skills and supports early literacy development.
1st Grade Learning Highlights
📘 English Language Arts📘
Students revisited the informational text From Cows to You to deepen their understanding of how milk moves from farms to consumers. During this lesson, students:
Analyzed supporting illustrations to identify key details.
Used a graphic organizer to distinguish between:
What the photo shows
What the text says
Discussed how illustrations help readers better understand unfamiliar processes.
Ohio Learning Standard Connection:
RI.1.6 – Distinguish between information provided by pictures or illustrations and information provided by the words in a text.
Parent Tip:
When reading nonfiction at home, pause and ask:
“What do you see in the picture?”
“What did the words tell us?”
Helping your child separate visual information from written information strengthens comprehension skills and prepares them for future academic reading tasks.
➕ Mathematics
Students participated in a Number Talk routine focused on grouping and number sense. Throughout the week, students:
Used visual dot groupings to discuss quantity and structure.
Sorted manipulatives by multiple attributes (color, length, and quantity).
Composed groups of 10 using blocks.
Sorted objects by shape (round buttons, square buttons).
Compared sets using math vocabulary such as fewer.
Ohio Learning Standard Connections:
1.OA.C.6 – Add and subtract within 20 using strategies such as counting on and making ten.
1.MD.C.4 – Organize, represent, and interpret data with up to three categories; ask and answer questions about the total and compare categories.
Parent Tip:
You can reinforce this learning at home by asking your child to:
Sort objects (coins, buttons, cereal pieces) by color or shape.
Make groups of 10 using small household items.
Compare two groups and ask, “Which has more? Which has fewer?”
These everyday conversations build strong number sense and mathematical reasoning.
🧮 Math in Action – Second Grade 🧮
Our second graders have been hard at work strengthening their understanding of two-digit addition and subtraction with regrouping. Students are solving problems such as 79 + 54 and 42 – 17, using place value strategies to deepen their mathematical thinking.
Aligned to Ohio Learning Standard 2.NBT.B, students are expected to fluently add and subtract within 100 using strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and the relationship between addition and subtraction.
In the classroom, students:
Solved multi-digit addition and subtraction problems using place value strategies.
Used graphic organizers with tens and ones to visually model their thinking.
Practiced regrouping by “making a new 10” when adding and “taking a 10 away” when subtracting.
Drew models to show their work and explained their strategies to classmates.
By focusing on conceptual understanding—not just the correct answer—students are building a strong foundation in number sense that will support more complex math in the future.
Family Tip: When practicing math at home, ask your child to explain how they solved a problem. Encouraging them to talk through their thinking strengthens understanding and confidence!
📚 Third Grade Literacy Update 📚
This week in reading, our third graders were deeply engaged in guided reading and comprehension work using our Wonders curriculum. Students continued reading The Impossible Pet Show and focused on strengthening their understanding of story elements and realistic fiction.
🔎 What Students Learned
Students worked on identifying key story elements, including:
-
Main character
-
Setting
-
Problem
They also practiced responding to text-dependent questions using the RACE strategy:
-
Restate the question
-
Answer the question
-
Cite evidence from the text
-
Explain their thinking
During instruction, small groups met with the teacher for targeted support, while classmates partner-read and completed comprehension questions using a graphic organizer aligned to the RACE framework. This structure allowed students to strengthen both independence and collaboration skills.
📖 Reading Focus
-
Understanding characteristics of realistic fiction
-
Building vocabulary (such as embarrassed and talent)
-
Practicing comprehension strategies like visualization and thinking deeply about text meaning
📏 Standard Addressed
RL.3.1 & RL.3.3 – Ask and answer questions to demonstrate understanding of a text, referring explicitly to the text as the basis for answers, and describe characters in a story and explain how their actions contribute to the sequence of events.
🏠 Family Connection Tip
When reading at home, ask your child:
-
Who is the main character?
-
Where does the story take place?
-
What problem is the character trying to solve?
-
What evidence from the text supports your answer?
Encourage your child to answer in complete sentences and to “prove it” by pointing to words in the text. This reinforces the RACE strategy and builds strong comprehension habits.
Our third graders are growing as thoughtful readers each day!
Looking forward to a productive week ahead,
Principal Mahoney-Curry
⭐ Aspectos Destacados – Primer Grado ⭐
📘 Artes del Lenguaje en Inglés 📘
Los estudiantes retomaron el texto informativo From Cows to You para profundizar su comprensión de cómo la leche llega desde las granjas hasta los consumidores. Durante esta lección, los estudiantes:
-
Analizaron ilustraciones para identificar detalles importantes.
-
Usaron un organizador gráfico para distinguir entre:
-
Lo que muestra la foto
-
Lo que dice el texto
-
-
