The Cannon Connection
2024-2025 Newsletter for Cannon Elementary Families
April 13-19, 2025
Good morning Cannon families,
Our first round of STAAR testing went off without a hitch, and our scholars did a phenomenal job! Thank you for making sure that our Cubs were on time and rested! Our next test is 5th grade Science on Tuesday, April 22.
Do you have gently used grade level and/or Cannon spirit shirts that you would like to donate back to the campus? We would love to collect any shirts you no longer need! Please drop them off in our front office. We promise to put them to good use!
We hope to see all of our Cannon community at the annual GCISD Walk a Mile this Tuesday! Join us for GCISD Walk a Mile, Tuesday, April 15, and make sure to WEAR YOUR CANNON CUB GEAR! Staff, families and community members are invited to join us from 6-7:30 p.m., Tuesday, April 15, at Mustang Panther Stadium. This free event is to spend time together as a GCISD family, meeting new people and connecting with friends while walking the track in a relaxed, friendly atmosphere. GCISD community leaders as well as first responders and representatives from Baylor Scott & White will also be there. As a reminder, to help keep our stadium clean, please leave furry friends at home.
Congratulations to our 2nd and 3rd grade STEM Habit of Mind Hall of Fame Inductees for Efficiently Communicating! STEM teaching and learning is an instructional approach to learning and development that integrates the areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Through STEM education practices, students develop key skills including: problem solving, creativity, and critical analysis. We are PROUD to honor our scholars for exhibiting STEM thinking, and we can't wait to celebrate our next group of inductees this Friday.
Cannon Transfer Window CLOSES April 21st!
Do you have neighbors with children that are interested in joining our AMAZING Cannon community? The Cannon Transfer Window will open tomorrow, Monday, March 24 and will remain open until April 21st. This will be the only transfer window for Kindergarten-fifth grade students to join our school for the 2025-2026 school year. Yes, Cannon is open for Kindergarten - 5th grade transfers to participate in our designated STEM school! Interested families should visit the district transfer website - https://www.gcisd.net/page/transfer-information
Ready, Set, Register! Registration for the 2025-2026 School Year is Now Open
Start your engines, GCISD families! Registration for new and returning students, pre-K through 12th grade, is officially open and we want to have a great opening lap.
Why Race to Register Now?
Helps Team GCISD with Planning - Campuses are staffed based on registration numbers. Knowing numbers before the summer minimizes last-minute hiring or the relocation of staff once the school year begins.
It’s a Speedy Lap Through Skyward - Most cells in Skyward for returning students are pre-populated so parents can zoom through the registration process.
Cruise into Summer Knowing Your Student Is Registered - Once you’ve crossed the registration finish line, you can shift into end-of-school year mode, knowing your student is ready for the next school year.
What are the links to register?
Returning students register through Skyward. Families enrolling in pre-K must first complete an online application available here.
New families should first request a Skyward account. Families who only need to register a sibling and already have a Skyward account can do so from their existing account. When registering, please be sure to select the 2025-2026 school year for enrollment.
Cross the finish line early and help GCISD gear up for another winning year!
As we end of year, we want all of our scholars to finish the year STRONG. Please help by making sure your Cub is at school on time each day, showing Cub PRIDE, and giving their full effort to show what they have learned this school year. If there are concerns regarding your scholars' attendance or academics, we will be in touch to discuss next steps.
Join us this Thursday at Rock and Brews in Grapevine for a Cannon Spirit Night Thursday, April 17, 4:00-9:00! Tell your waiter you are with Cannon Elementary and 20% will go back to Cannon to support our amazing school community.
As a reminder, for planning purposes, there is no school for staff or students on Friday, April 18th!
As always, thank you for your parent partnership!
Proud to be your principal,
Dr. Tina Garrett
A Special Note from Mrs. Bailey~
Thank you for the outpouring of love from your sweet Cubs last week! All of the kind words of appreciation, thoughtful cards, and hugs brought a smile to my face. I’m so proud to serve our Cannon Community as your Assistant Principal!!
Thank You from Mrs. Bailey!

Grapevine Police Department - National Superhero Day!
On behalf of the Grapevine Police Department, we are excited to extend an invitation for the students to participate in a fun and creative activity in celebration of National Superhero Day on April 14th, 2025.
We’ve turned our very own K9 Officer Thor into a superhero by giving him a cape, and we’d love for your students to color a “Superhero Thor” coloring page.
Here are the steps for the coloring contest:
- Coloring the Page: Students received the coloring page from Mrs. Mattox, their art teacher. Students are invited to color their best rendition of “Superhero Thor.” We ask that they write their name, grade, and school on the back of their coloring page.
- Submission Deadline:
All coloring pages should be turned into their School Resource Officer or Mrs. Mattox the art teacher by Monday, April 14th. - Display and Contest:
After all submissions are collected, the artwork will be displayed inside the Grapevine Public Safety Building. Each entry will be judged, and the winners will be announced on National Superhero Day, April 28th, by our SROs and on our Facebook page. - Prizes: The winners will receive a special K9 Thor plushie as a prize!
We are excited for your students to participate and hope they enjoy this fun, creative way to celebrate National Superhero Day. If you have any questions or need additional information, please don't hesitate to reach out.

Our 3rd-5th grade scholars did a great job with the first round of STAAR testing! On Tuesday, April 22, we will have the next round of STAAR testing for 5th grade SCIENCE!
Here are a few reminders we need your help with ~ Our scholars need:
Get a good night’s rest!
Eat a healthy, hearty breakfast
Arrive at school on time (7:40 am)
Bring charged device with charger
Bring a dry snack and a water bottle
All phones and smart watches must be turned off and turned in during testing- please consider keeping them at home on testing days.
Important Information:
If a student is absent on a testing date, they will have an opportunity to take a make-up test during the specific window for the content test.
If a student becomes ill or extenuating circumstances arise once they begin their test and they need to be sent home, their test will be paused, saved in the system, and can be finished when they return to school before the end of the testing window date.
There is no time limit on the STAAR tests, and once our scholars start, we do not want to interrupt their thinking. That said, please do not schedule appointments on testing days. Our campus will be closed for test security protocols Wednesday of this week; this does include no lunch visitors or deliveries.
*5th Grade Math STAAR Message:The Math STAAR test will be administered to all students on Tuesday, April 29. It is important that all 5th grade students are present to test on this date. 5th graders are scheduled to participate in a field trip to the Perot Museum the following day, April 30. Please note that if your 5th grade student is absent for any reason on the 29th, they will remain at school on the 30th to take their make-up Math STAAR test. This is due to the testing window end date of May 2nd and students must test the day that they return to campus.
