Book of the Month π
What are First Graders learning this month? π
Fundations
First Graders will change focus from sounds to syllables. Our students will tune in to looking at words in larger orthographic parts (syllables, rather than individual sounds). In this Unit we will teach students how to read and spell two-syllable words with closed syllables. Example: word catnip.
Trick Words that will be introduced:
-people
-month
-little
-been
-own
-want
-Mr.
-Mrs.
Reading
In this module, children will recognize that good things can happen when a person is brave enough to try something new. They will read about inventors, architects, and others who have been brave and tried new things. Students will continue working on recognizing characteristics of informational texts and share information and ideas in cooperative learning interactions.
What are ideas and how does the author support it?
What is a topic and what is a central idea?
What are point of views?
Writing
Students will work on Focal Texts. Students will write a story, a Personal Narrative, about someone who helped them solve a problem. Students will learn about problems and solutions:
make connections to personal experiences,
ask questions to build background and understanding,
identify words that appeal to the senses or help the reader visualize,
use prewriting strategies to plan writing and generate ideas,
organize the structure of a narrative.
Math for Classes 102, 104, and 105
Students will be working on a new mathematics unit called How Many Tens? How Many Ones? Students will be counting by groups, initially by 2s and by 5s, which lays the foundation for counting by 10s. We will work on adding and subtracting 10 to any number and on adding and subtracting multiples of 10. Students will also developing strategies for adding 2-digit numbers.
Math for Classes 101, 103, and 106
Students explore and reason about attributes of two- and three-dimensional shapes. Students name shapes, including cone, sphere, cylinder, cube, square, rectangle, triangle, rhombus, and hexagon. Students identify defining attributes (number of straight sides and corners) of triangles, rectangles, and squares.
Students explore the idea of halves and fourths or quarters as equal pieces of a whole. Students hear and use the term halves to describe a shape split into two equal pieces and the terms fourths and quarters to describe a shape split into four equal pieces
Notes from First Grade Teachers π
Read at home!
Make sure your child reads for 20 minutes a day. Ask your child about the stories they read; who are the characters, what is your favorite part, what was the story about?
Students in class 103 should be reading in English and in Spanish!
Check your child's homework folder!
Check your child's homework folder every day for important notices.
Wear sneakers from gym!
Students should be wearing sneakers for gym. If you're not sure, double check with your teacher(s) which day your child has gym.
Try at home
Talk with your child about things you do together at home. Think about the steps you take from beginning, middle, to end.
Have your child practice writing sentences, remembering to capitalize the first word and end the sentence with punctuation.
Count forward and back 1-100.

Mr. Schorr (Music): First graders will be using the last month of school to continue our work with music mapping, and to review the musical concepts they have learned this year.
Ms. Markovinovic (Science): The First Grade Scientists will continue to learn about patterns and cycles in space. Scientists will explore different constellations and learn about the important job of astronauts. As we end this school year, continue exploring and learning about the world around you.
