Eighth Grade Coil Pots
Eighth graders are working on painting their coil pots this week and next. In December, they learned how to roll out a slab base and add coils using the 4 S Method. The 4 S Method is the traditional way to join the a coil pot. First, students score the two areas they'd like to join, and then they add a small amount of slip (clay & water mixture). Finally, students smash the coils together before smoothing/smearing the coils together. The assignment was to create a coil pot at least four coils high. Most eighth graders went above and beyond the assignment creating pots that were much taller and wider than the example. Students could then use the extra clay to create any kind of sculpture or pot of their choice. I am super impressed with the craftsmanship that our 8th graders showed with these pots, especially since it was their first time with coil pots!

Mrs. Turbes welcomes a new grandson!
Mrs. Turbes and her family welcomed a new little bundle of joy into the world over Christmas break. So she is away in Colorado this week helping her daugther Emma and son-in-law Alex and enjoying all the baby snuggles with her new grandson Charlie Michael. A big thanks to Claire Begley for subbing for Mrs. Turbes so that our kiddos can still check out books. Congratulations Mrs. Turbes and family!

Happy New Year!
Happy new year! In music class we have hit the ground running getting prepared for the Operetta production (in 3rd grade and up). In addition to preparing the music so the show can be successful, students have the opportunity to develop their singing, musicianship, note reading, and teamwork skills as well. After school, our students are already doing a fabulous job figuring out their lines and blocking along with learning the incredible amount of music this show features. We have some hard working students!
The younger students are looking at what goes into good drama/acting/storytelling in a variety of ways. We will hopefully be able to share some of the products of this work later in the year.

Snowmen, Shapes, and STEM: Our 5th Grade Engineering Challenge!
Right before the winter break, our 5th graders had the opportunity for an engineering challenge: building the ultimate paper snowman!
Working in small groups, students were tasked with designing a three-tiered snowman using only computer paper and tape. To make it challenging, each tier had to be a different 3D shape and smaller than the one beneath it. Groups had limited time to design and build the tallest structure that could stand on its own.
Through this activity, students practiced several key skills:
Geometry: Identifying and constructing various 3D shapes.
Engineering: Testing structural stability and meeting specific project requirements.
Mathematics: Using precise measurement to determine the winner.
Soft Skills: Mastering teamwork and time management under a deadline.
It was wonderful to see the creative ways students solved the problem of making paper "stack up!"
