Dear Parents,
Can you believe March is here and spring is just round the corner? Students seem to become excited at this time of year when the days get longer and the temps warm up. As we approach the final marking period of school, please be sure to remind your child that we continue to hold the same expectations in all areas of our school and on our buses “Be Safe! Be Respectful! Be Responsible!”
As the school year has progressed we have been pleased with the daily progress our students are making. Kindergarten classrooms are beginning to take on the appearance of first grade, first graders are demonstrating competencies of many second graders and our second graders have grown exponentially in preparation for the transition to grade three. Student improvement in reading, writing and mathematics is evidenced on a daily basis throughout the building. More importantly, students are working to establish independence which is crucial to students’ success. It is thrilling to watch students learn, grow and thrive!
We would like to once again thank all members of the Ruth Ann Primary Community for their continued commitment and support. As always, please never hesitate to call if you have any questions or concerns. Enjoy the beauty and the amazing bright colors of Spring!

CLOTHES NEEDED
Please help us out and place an extra set of clothing (pants, shirt, underwear, socks) in your child’s book bag to use for emergencies. The health office has exhausted our supply of clothes this year and donations aren’t coming in like they used to. Also if clothes are borrowed, please wash them and return to the health office.
Thank You!

Our literacy focus for ALL students is to build a strong foundation as students ‘learn to read’ so that they ‘read to learn.’ Here are some tips for families to engage with your reader at home!
- Connect what your child reads with what happens in life. If reading a book about animals, relate it to your last trip to the zoo.
- Fill a box with drawing and writing materials. Find opportunities for your child to write, such as the shopping list, thank you notes, or birthday cards or write a few sentences about something special. .
- Ask your child questions about the story you've just read. Say something like, "Why do you think Clifford did that?" “How might Clifford feel and why?” “How might you change the (ending or setting or characters) in the story?”
- Help your child pick books that are not too difficult. The aim is to give your child lots of successful reading experiences. Allow your child to read and REREAD the same stories to build fluency.
- Have your ‘play with words!’ Using magnetic letters, whiteboard/marker, paper/pencil, or sugar/salt on a cookie tray, have them sound out and spell the word mat. Ask them to change one letter to make sat; then sat to sit; then sit to quit; then quit to quilt; then quilt to built! The possibilities are endless!
- When your child has sounded out an unfamiliar word, have him or her re-read that sentence. Often kids are so busy figuring out a word they lose the meaning of what they've just read

TITLE I
- Federal law requires that we let our families know when a teacher or substitute who does not have a certain set of credentials teaches your child for four or more consecutive weeks. In the event that this would occur, you would be notified in a timely manner. If you have questions about this process, please contact the WCS Title I office at 301-766-2936.
- As a Title I school, we strive to involve parents, families, and community members to collaborate in the school’s decision making processes so that together we are advocating for our students and their achievement and success both at school and at home. During the first week of school and at our back to school events, you were provided a Title I folder that contained information from the district and the school about Title I policies and procedures. Two copies of two important documents in this folder, the Parent Title I School-Parent Partnership Compact and the Title I School Parent and Family Engagement Policy/Plan were provided to all families. The end of the marking period is a great time to review these documents to remind ourselves of our ‘agreements’ with each other (staff, parent and student) to ensure strong academic achievement; and, also to review how families and the school can continue to engage with one another. If you would like another copy of either document, they are available at any time by contacting Cindy Hinkle, our School Family Liaison, at 301-766- 8677. We welcome you to provide any feedback at any time on how we may continue to support the success of all learners! and/or their families.
