The Braintree Buzz
Principal's Update
I hope everyone had a great week. Students have been hard at work and play. One source of excitement here is that it's Special Activities time! For the last 4 Fridays of the school year (excluding 5/26 for the half day), students will participate in enrichment activities like campfire cooking, embroidery, Spanish, and other topics.
Clothing Policy Info
It is spring time, and the weather is getting warmer. Here is a reminder of our clothing policy, from page 21 of the Family Handbook:
"We expect that student clothing will be clean; cover all private body parts and undergarments; be appropriate for the weather; be safe and respectful of themselves and their school. Clothing with sexual innuendos, violent or offensive language, pictures, or symbols is not appropriate."
All students are expected to wear a top and bottom or dress/jumpsuit/romper at school that conforms to the above expectation. If students are attending a school-sponsored swimming activity (such as the June 16 fishing and swimming field trip for grades 4-6), they may wear a bathing suit supplied by their family. Teachers will reach out if bathing suits are required for a swimming activity, otherwise, all activities at school follow our typical clothing expectations outlined above.
If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out. Thank you for your cooperation!

Agriculture Field Trip
I had the great pleasure of bringing our sixth grade class on a field trip to Fairmont Farm in East Montpelier on Wednesday. The trip was organized by 4H and the University of Vermont Extension. Students got to learn about the diverse careers available in agriculture. From scientists who study dung beetles to farm loan providers to cow feed producers, there are a wide array of ways to be involved in a field (pun intended!) so important to the economy of Vermont.
Identifying dung beetles by their characteristics
Testing out a "weigh tape", a method of estimating a cow's weight by their circumference
Cows have the same number of bones as humans (206), but they are MUCH larger.
Comparing the breakdown of organic materials in various field conditions
Learning about soil types and field treatments for the healthiest crops
Inspecting dung beetles
Checkmate!
Ms. Robinson's third graders invited some older students to join them in friendly chess matches.
Graduation Slideshow
The 6th grade students are creating a slideshow for graduation! It would be great if each graduate could collect 10-15 photos celebrating their accomplishments throughout elementary school. No naked baby pics, please.
Please send any photos to Ms. Emma ejanicki@orangesouthwest.org . If a student has paper photos they can bring them to school to be scanned. If you have any questions please email kbranstetter@orangesouthwest.org.
