Weekly Update 11/10/25

11-10-25
From the Principal
Parents, Students, and Faculty,
Our Cross Country teams wrapped up their season at the GHSA State Meet on Saturday, and we are extremely proud of their hard work and dedication throughout the season. Zach King was our best placing runner with all members finishing. Great job, Indians!
This week will be another busy one for Seminole County Middle High School. Our middle school basketball teams will play on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday, so come out and support our young Indians as they continue their season. On Friday night, our high school football team will host Washington-Wilkes in the first round of the state playoffs—let’s fill the stands and cheer them on as they make their playoff run! On Saturday, the Seminole Stix Fishing Team will compete on Lake Seminole, launching from the Bainbridge Boat Basin. We wish them good luck and tight lines!
In addition to athletics, we have several important events taking place on campus. Our REACH Georgia Signing Ceremony will be held on Wednesday as we celebrate our REACH Scholars and their commitment to academic excellence and future success. Progress reports will go home on Thursday, so please take time to review them and reach out to teachers if needed. On Friday, our seniors will participate in the annual Apply to College event, where they will receive guidance and support in submitting college applications. It’s shaping up to be an exciting and productive week at Seminole County Middle High School, the best school in southwest Georgia!

The Circular Flow of Economics
Students in Economics recently took their learning outside for a creative hands-on activity illustrating the Circular Flow of Economics. Using sidewalk chalk, they drew large-scale diagrams showing how money, goods, and services move between households, businesses, and the government. The colorful visuals helped students better understand key concepts like production, consumption, and exchange in a fun and engaging way. This interactive lesson made the flow of economic activity come to life right on the pavement!
Statistical Reasoning
Did you know your arm span is often about the same as your height? 🤔
Mrs. Cannon’s 8th grade math students explored this question through an engaging, hands-on investigation that kicked off their unit on Statistical Reasoning. Working in groups, students measured each other’s arm spans (fingertip to fingertip) and heights using tape measures and rulers, then converted their results from inches to feet.
Standards covered in this lesson included:
-
Pair-based measurement using tape measures and rulers (recording arm span and standing height)
-
Converting measurements from inches to feet to reinforce practical unit conversion skills.
-
Plotting class data as bivariate data to explore relationships between two variables.
-
Interpreting scatter plots, identifying trends, outliers, and sources of variation or measurement error.
-
Continuing linear-model thinking by estimating a line of best fit and predicting for new data points.
Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration with Algae Beads
AP Biology students participated in a new fun, hands-on, and interactive lab activity that examines the two fundamental processes that sustain life on Earth: photosynthesis and cellular respiration. Students used algae beads and a pH indicator solution to explore how these processes are connected and dispel the common misconception that plants only photosynthesize and only animals perform cellular respiration — plants (and algae) do both!

WBL Spotlight
Lyndon Touchton is a senior at SCMHS and is completing his work-based learning hours at Seminole Pole. As a second-year WBL student, Lyndon has not only increased his hours but has also expanded his skills and knowledge in the construction of concrete poles.
Lyndon successfully completed the Agriculture Mechanics pathway and is now an Agribusiness Systems pathway concentrator. The knowledge and skills he continues to gain both in the classroom and on the job complement each other perfectly and will serve him well as he pursues future studies in the Agribusiness field.
Seminole Pole has been a valued WBL partner for three years, and we sincerely appreciate their continued support and partnership. Great job, Lyndon—keep up the excellent work!

GHSA statement on NIL
The Georgia High School Association (GHSA) voted to amend its policies regarding Name, Image, and Likeness payments to prep student-athletes. The changes are focused on curtailing any activity from what is known as NIL Collectives, a system that has permeated and fundamentally altered college athletics. NIL Collectives are shell corporations that function to exploit loopholes in NIL policy and allow donors to pay student-athletes for their athletic talents and enrollment at specific institutions –– these payments are often used in a recruiting context to maintain current players, solicit transfer athletes, or sign top level high school recruits.
With fear of the NIL Collective system seeping down from the NCAA and into the high school level, the GHSA has taken swift action to amend its rules. The new language to GHSA policy was formally voted in yesterday: “No student-athlete may be a member of nor receive compensation or any other benefit from a Collective or NIL Club. A Collective is defined as any group organized or existing for the purpose of compensating or benefiting an individual student[-]athlete or group of student athletes of a member school. NIL Clubs are defined as a group of student athletes organized or existing for the purpose of soliciting funds or other benefits from fans, members or other sources, managing or promoting NIL activities of student athletes or otherwise providing funds or other benefits to an individual student athlete or group of student athletes.”
