Principals' Message
It's hard to believe that this is our LAST newsletter of the 2022-2023 school year. It's said every year, but this year truly went so fast! We are so proud of all our staff and students for all they have accomplished in and through themselves this school year. They have faced challenges, been strong advocates and we have all grown so much as an educational community. We pride ourselves on who we are here and what we are all about. We are so hopeful and excited for the future of our building and district.
We want to send a special "thank you" to all the families of our 5th grade students. Thank you for allowing us the opportunity to be such a large part of your child's educational journey. We wish our 5th grade students all the best as they continue their path to West Middle School. We know that they each have the opportunity to have a positive influence on others as they transition to this next chapter of their education.
Thank you to all those parents and students who made it out to our Spring Dances. It was so great to see dancing, laughing and kids genuinely having a great time together with their loved ones.
As we wrap up this school year, we want to express our gratitude to ALL our Scioto families. You place your children in our hands each and everyday and we are grateful for the opportunity to have a positive impact on their lives. We appreciate your trust in us as administrators and trust in the educational system. Together, we are a team and together we can influence positive change. We appreciate you being on our team and for taking an active role in your child's educational success.
Wow! We have A LOT going on this month! Please read through this newsletter to make sure you don't miss something exciting coming up.
As always, please reach out to either one of us if needed!

Counselor's Corner
Emotional intelligence consists of 5 components including self-awareness, self-regulation, social skills, empathy and motivation. It’s easy to see how strengthening each of these components can help children thrive at school and at home. I often talk to parents about self-awareness and self-regulation when we discuss ways to support a child cope with strong emotions and control impulses. Students aren’t born with these skills but they learn them through the way we interact with them, how we interact with other people and how we interact in the world around us. We can help students strengthen these skills by intentionally teaching, modeling and practicing.
Here are some science-backed ways to help teach and practice self-regulation with your child at home: Help your child recognize the higher-goal. Most impulse control boils down to this: Controlling an impulse in order to meet a higher goal. The higher goal is usually about empathy, social relationships, or learning (being productive). The first step is to help children recognize the higher goal of the situation and provide the time and space for their impulses too — it’s not that all impulses are bad, it’s that they have to be regulated to the right time and place. Use naturally occurring situations to teach self-regulation strategies. We use regulation all the time — those natural situations are perfect teachable moments. Waiting to open holiday presents, taking turns with a prized toy, and being quiet while a story is read aloud at the library are all examples of natural situations which are teachable moments for self-regulation skills. Acknowledge the challenge of regulation. Self-regulation is really hard for kids. When they struggle, acknowledge it. If they get frustrated, acknowledge it. Have your child make a choice and a plan. Cognitively, a well-regulated older child would be able to look through a set of options and make a reasoned decision. Or, faced with a wide array of possibilities, that child could make a plan. Play games that focus on self-regulation skills. So, when you aren’t in one of those naturally occurring situations, the best thing to do to help children practice self-regulation skills is to play games. We are so EXCITED to have an author & illustrator visit Scioto after two Covid restricted years!!! Jeff Ebbeler will be here on May 18!!!
I have been reading KRAKEN ME UP to the whole school and all students have become illustrators! All of their amazing Krakens will fill the walls of the gym for Jeff to enjoy. We will continue to read his books and prepare for his visit. I'm really looking forward to having some end of the year fun, and a craft or two, with the students!
