Dear Torringford Families,

Happy New Year! We hope you had a relaxing and enjoyable winter break and that 2026 is off to a great start for you and your family. It has been so nice to welcome our Torringford Tigers back to school and see their smiles, energy, and excitement as they jump back into learning.

As we settle into the winter months, please remember to send your child to school dressed for the colder weather. Coats, hats, gloves or mittens, and boots are important, as students will continue to go outside for recess when weather permits. Being prepared helps everyone stay comfortable and ready for a fun day at school.

We also encourage families to keep the learning going at home by talking about math in everyday ways. Simple conversations about numbers, patterns, and problem-solving can make a big difference in building confidence and understanding. Included in this newsletter is a message from Mrs. Zima, Math Interventionists, with ideas to support math at home.

January is a great time for fresh starts and continued growth, and we are looking forward to all the learning and experiences ahead. As always, we appreciate your partnership and encourage you to reach out with any questions or concerns. We are always here to help and support your child.

Thank you for being such an important part of our Torringford community. We wish you a happy, healthy, and successful new year!

With Tiger Pride,

Mrs. Galullo (Principal) & Mrs. Austin (Assistant Principal)

Encouraging Positive Behavior with PAWSOME Cards

At Torringford School, we are proud to celebrate students who earn PAWSOME cards for demonstrating positive behavior throughout the school day. From the classroom to the playground, cafeteria, and buses, students are recognized for making respectful, responsible, and safe choices.

When students are acknowledged for doing the right thing, it helps create a positive school community where everyone can learn and succeed. Families can support this at home by recognizing and celebrating positive choices as well. Together, we are helping our students shine!

In December, 384 Pawsome cards were awarded. Congratulations to the following Torringford Tigers:

  • Hendrixx Hines: Sensory Fun with Mr. Larry
  • Ivy Tavarez: Fancy Lunch
  • Fernando Loja: Hot Chocolate with Mrs. Deloy
  • Liam Gangloff: Bracelet Making with Mrs. Lorentzen
  • Daniel Judson & Philip Covelli : Snowball Fight!

We appreciate your partnership in promoting a positive learning environment for all students. Please be sure to celebrate your student when they share with you a PAWSOME award received at school.

Strong Tigers Start with Healthy Habits

January is peak cold and flu season, and we appreciate your help keeping our school community healthy. Frequent handwashing, getting plenty of sleep, eating nutritious foods, and staying hydrated all support strong immune systems.

Please remember to keep children home if they have a fever, vomiting, or flu-like symptoms, and ensure they are dressed appropriately for winter weather.

Together, we can help reduce the spread of illness and keep everyone feeling their best.

Proudly Caring for Our Torringford Tigers,

Nurse Alli & Nurse Denise

Math Intervention K-3 Math Intervention K-3

In math intervention, students in grades K–3 are strengthening the foundational skills that support long-term math success. We are focusing on number sense, including recognizing quantities, understanding numbers and their relationships, building fluency with addition and subtraction, and developing confidence with place value. Students also practice explaining their thinking, using strategies, and building perseverance when solving problems. These early skills help children make sense of math and prepare them for more complex learning in later grades. Ways to Support Math at Home: Count everyday objects together (snacks, toys, steps, or groceries) and talk about “how many” you see. Ask your child to solve simple addition or subtraction stories using real-life situations (e.g., “You have 5 crackers and eat 2—how many are left?”). Play quick math games like dice games, card games, or “How many more to make 10?” Encourage your child to explain how they got an answer—there’s often more than one great way to solve a problem! Thank you for partnering with us to build strong, confident mathematicians! Brandy Zima, Ed.S. Math Interventionist Torringford School

Building in Pre-K

Our preschoolers have been busy building and having fun! They enjoyed working on puzzles and creating towers with Mega Tiles, building problem-solving skills, creativity, and teamwork along the way. We love seeing their focus and excitement during play.

Throughout the month of December, we learned about a variety of winter holidays around the world. We explored holiday traditions through stories, songs, games, crafts, and hands-on activities.

This month, the third grade students are working in Unit 5 in Benchmark. The focus of this unit is “Advancements in Technology.” After reading each article, students are asked to show their comprehension of the text through writing. The students in Mrs. Hollenbeck’s third grade read the article, “Thomas Edison: A Curious Mind” & responded to the following: Read paragraphs 1–5 and answer the following question:

What does it mean to have “a curious mind?” Underline the textevidence you used to draw an inference and write the inference in the margins of the text. The attached picture shows a proud student with his written response.
