Hi Caverly Families!
I can’t believe we have already reached the end of October. We’ve had so much fun studying apples, trees, leaves, and pumpkins! Last week we read a book called Pumpkin Jack. This is a book about a little boy, Tim, who carves a fierce and funny jack-o’-lantern and decides to name it Jack. When Halloween is over, the pumpkin begins to rot. Tim sets it out in the garden and throughout the weeks watches it change. By Spring a plant begins to grow, and Tim discovers a garden full of pumpkins in the Fall! This book gave us an intimate look at the life cycle of a pumpkin and students seemed to really enjoy reading it! We will conduct our own Pumpkin Jack science experiment in our classroom next week. We will fill a container with some soil, and place our jack-o’-lantern inside to continue to observe and document what happens!
We will also begin learning all about transportation and community helpers next week. We will continue to strengthen our math and literacy skills while also exploring who community helpers are and how they might travel to and from the places that they need to go! The Vermont Early Learning Standards suggest that at the preschool age, “children develop personal health and self-care habits, and become increasingly independent”. They also suggest that at this age, “children develop the ability to identify unsafe situations and use safe practices.” Learning about professionals such as doctors, dentists, police officers and firefighters will support our learning in these areas while also strengthening our sense of community and belongingness. The PIttsford Fire Department has kindly donated a Fire Safety goodie bag for each student at Caverly, those will go home sometime next week! If any of our wonderful parents, who are also community helpers, would like to come speak to their child's class about their job and how they help the community you are welcome to do so! Just reach out to me and we can make a plan. Thank you!
