Ridge Relay February 23, 2024

Hello Eagles!

*Reminder: If you will be picking up your child from school early, please call the school (512-570-3500) ahead of time to let the Receptionist know. This allows our Receptionist time to get a pass written ahead of time and helps to move the process along more quickly. And we do not allow early pick up after 4:00pm due to end of the day dismissal procedures.

*If you pick your child up early, telling us that you are taking them to a doctor or other appointment, does not automatically excuse the absence. You still must turn in a doctor's note and follow attendance procedures for absences to be excused.

This newsletter is FULL of important dates for this Spring. Please mark your calendars now and plan to join us for many fun activities, required dates and opportunities to already start preparing for next year!

Go Eagles!

Parent feedback survey

Providing a safe, welcoming and caring school environment while partnering with our families has positively impacted student learning and personal growth. As we continue to measure these attributes of our school climate, engaging our students and families will help us assess where we have been, and where we currently are and identify opportunities to improve and grow for the future.

On Wednesday, you should have received an email from Dr. Bruce Gearing asking you for feedback. This survey is important to us because it is not just district feedback - as a campus, it gives our team feedback specifically on CRMS. I would really appreciate it, if you would take the time to complete this survey. I did it for my own child's school and it is very short and completely anonymous but provides valuable feedback for the campus. If you did not get the email or want the quick link, here is the Parent survey link.

NEW! IB Info Session

In the next couple of weeks the LISD transfer window will open, and families will have the opportunity to request a transfer to pursue the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program. The LISD IB Admin are excited to extend a virtual informational session to all LISD 8th students and parents/guardians to learn more about what the International Baccalaureate program is, and if it is something they would like to pursue as a part of their high school pathway.

While students do not officially join the program until their 11th grade year, any students wishing to pursue the IB Diploma have the option to transfer to either Leander High School or Vandegrift High School starting in 9th grade.

If you are not familiar, the International Baccalaureate program is an advanced diploma track that encourages inquiry-based thinking, global mindedness, and effective collaboration within a diverse cohort. IB coursework is taken in both junior and senior year and includes the potential of earning college credit and can give students a competitive edge in college admissions. We have seen many of our graduates commit to their first-choice of higher-ed institutions, and some students have been recruited specifically as a result of their IB participation.

If you would like to hear more about the IB program's offerings, please register for the upcoming webinar:

  • WHEN: Thursday, February 29 - 5:00-6:00 PM

District Seeks Community Input as Part of Instructional Resources Adoption Process extended to March 1

All LISD parents and students have the opportunity to provide input on the adoption of primary instructional resources. A list of the courses adopting new resources this year, opportunities to view the resources, and opportunities to ask questions are provided on the Leander ISD Instructional Materials Selection website.

This spring, Leander ISD will consider the adoption of new instructional resources, including AP Government, AP European History, AP Economics, AP Psychology, AP Chemistry, K-12 Science (All grades & courses, including Astronomy, an approved new course), and 14 different Career & Technical Education courses.

A feedback form is open to input with our Curriculum team on any of the subjects currently up for review. Digital access to materials and course descriptions are now published on the district’s site. And physical copies of these texts – when noted with “Hard Copy Available” – will be available at two in-person locations: the LISD Admin Building and Cedar Park HS.

Three Q&A Zoom sessions with the Curriculum Coordinators are scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 7, at the following times: 9 a.m., 12 p.m. and 5 p.m.

We encourage the #1LISD community to provide feedback on these resources between now and Feb 16 (now extended to March 1).

Voting Location

Please note: As always, Canyon Ridge Middle School is a Travis County Voting location. Therefore, CRMS will be hosting Voting on campus on Tuesday, March 5, 2024 from 7am to 7pm. We will have parking for voters noted in the parking lot by the track. No voters will be permitted to enter at the main entrance of the school. All voters will enter at the side gym entrance, vote in the main gym and exit the gym door.

Leander ISD Voting Information

The Texas Election Code (Sec. 43.031) specifies that an entity that owns or controls a public building shall make the building available for use as a polling place in any election that covers territory in which the building is located. Please be aware that Travis County has requested CRMS be used as a polling place on Tuesday, March 5, 2024. The polling place will be located in the main gym. To ensure the safety of our students and staff and minimize disruption to campus operations, we have made every effort to select an area that limits election workers and voter access to the campus. Additionally, staff will be monitoring the polling location area.

We will be adjusting our bell schedule so that all students will have classes, finish lunch, be escorted outside with grade level classes to experience this once-in-a-lifetime full solar eclipse and then return to regularly scheduled classes.

As well, in preparation of the event, all CRMS students will receive a follow-up solar eclipse lesson in Science classes on Tuesday, April 9th to expand on what every student witnessed on Monday.

Ms. Bouton, 7th Grade ELA Teacher

Ms. Bouton is a 7th grade ELA teacher here at the Ridge, this is her 5th year teaching. She loves that everyone at CRMS supports one another. This year she was very excited to see the short stories that her students worked on. She says the stories were exceptional and that the students created amazing book covers to go with them. Ms Bouton’s love of writing is clear; in college she even co-founded a creative writing club on her campus. We are lucky to have her and her flare for writing here at Canyon Ridge.

zoom_out_map

Ms. Schreiber, 8th Grade Science Teacher

Ms. Schreiber teaches 8th grade science here at Canyon Ridge and has been teaching for 12 years. She says her favorite thing about CRMS is the love and support we all have for each other and the effort and attitude our students put forth each and every day. This year Ms. Schreiber is excited about her new group point system that motivates students supporting students. Her advice to her students is to consistently show that they care for one another. Fun fact; Ms. Schreiber can do a backflip. It’s easy to see why we’re head over heels for her!

Attendance

Important Attendance Reminders:

  • Absence notes should be emailed to crmsattendance@leanderisd.org within 48 hours of the absence.
  • When you email the school, please include the student's first and last name and ID #. Student nicknames can cause confusion with attendance coding.

  • If you will be picking up your child from school early, please call the school (512-570-3500) ahead of time to let the Receptionist know. This allows our Receptionist time to get a pass written ahead of time and helps to move the process along more quickly.

  • The only people who will be permitted to pick up a child will be parents/guardians and those individuals listed as an emergency contact in your Home Access Center (HAC). Due to safety reasons, we cannot allow a parent to call in and give permission for someone to pick up your child during the school day other than those listed in HAC.

We do not allow early pick up after 4:00pm.

  • If you feel like there is an error for a particular class period, please email the teacher directly first. For example, if your student was tardy and the teacher accidentally already marked the student absence, email the teacher because the attendance office has to have it in writing from the teacher before attendance can update anything
  • There is a turn around time in updates if a student was with the nurse, AP, counselor, etc. It is not necessary to email the attendance office. Please remember that we have almost 1100 students so it will take 1-2 business days to show the update. We appreciate your patience and understanding that our team is working tirelessly to support all of our Eagles!

Bus updates from Transportation

The Leander ISD Transportation Department uses SMART Tag – a system that provides accurate, near real-time monitoring of where and when students load onto and unload off of their school bus – to help promote student safety and security, keeping parents, school administrators and the district’s transportation department more informed.

Returning bus riders are asked to continue to use the SMART Tag card they were issued last year. If they do not have a card, the student will punch in using their lunch number (student ID) when getting on and off the bus. Bus drivers will begin to issue cards in September for new bus riders.

The online parent portal allows parents and guardians to register to receive alerts for when the bus will arrive at their child’s stop; see a live map of their child’s bus; and view a riding history for their child. Be sure to register if you have never done so.

By Wednesday, Aug. 9, Leander ISD parents can enter their home address into Infofinder to look up their child’s bus route number, pick-up/drop-off times, and bus stop locations for the 2023–24 school year. Bus routes are subject to change, so LISD parents are strongly encouraged to confirm their child’s bus information again the week prior to the start of school.
