3rd Quarter Progress Report Grades - Now Visible

I know it feels like the 1st Semester just ended, but we have officially hit the halfway point of the 3rd Quarter! 3rd Quarter Progress Report Grades are now visible in ParentConnect. There is plenty of time to bring grades up! We encourage students to use the remaining time this weekend to complete any missing work and submit assignments that can still be completed for credit. We want all of our students to get off to a good start this semester and this is a great opportunity to do so.

As a reminder, the 3rd Quarter ends BEFORE Spring Break this year, ending on Friday, March 27th.

Yearbook Information - Deadline Today!

This is a reminder to order your student’s yearbook if you haven’t already and would like to purchase one for them. The deadline to order a yearbook is today!

High school yearbooks are different—our yearbook staff works hard to capture every student’s story. Yearbook distribution is always an exciting day, and we typically do not have extra copies available. Once they are sold out, they are gone forever.

Haven't ordered your yearbook yet? It's not too late! Click on this link to place your order: https://www.yearbooknerds.com/brighton-high-school.

0 or 7th Hour Survey for Students

To start next week, we will be reaching out to our student body to see who would have interest in taking a 0 or 7th Hour class to allow them to take an additional class in their schedule. Students may choose to do so for a variety of different reasons, including to have room to take additional elective offerings while still meeting all graduation requirements. There is no guarantee that this will be happening and potential planning is still in its infancy. No need to worry about their responses locking them in to anything if they change their mind between now and when the classes would potentially start. We just wanted you to be aware so that your aren't caught off guard if you hear anything about students being surveyed about this potential opportunity at some point. We will share additional information if/when it becomes appropriate to do so. In the meantime, please don't hesitate to reach out if you have any questions! A copy of the survey can be found here.

Kindness and Respect Month

February is BHS KINDNESS AND RESPECT MONTH! While kindness is something we always strive to incorporate into our daily lives here at BHS, this February, we’re taking it to the next level by focusing our attention and intention on leading with kindness! We think this is something that all of our students and staff can rally behind and can have a positive impact on our overall BHS community.

We’re inviting all groups, clubs, teams, councils, boards, and student organizations to join us in spreading kindness throughout our school and community. Let’s show how small acts of kindness can create BIG, positive impacts! You don't have to be a coach or club sponsor to promote and show kindness and respect, but if you are, below is additional information about how you and your group(s) can get involved in a larger fashion.

How can your group contribute?
We’re looking for creative and meaningful ways to promote kindness. Here are just a few ideas to get you started:

  • Create videos for the morning announcements.
  • Design eye-catching kindness posters.
  • Start a “Random Acts of Kindness” campaign.
  • Encourage students to sit with someone new at lunch.
  • Brainstorm any other unique ways your group can spread kindness!

What we’re NOT looking for:
This isn’t about fundraisers. Instead, focus on team-oriented projects and initiatives that promote a wholehearted community of kindness.

When you’re ready:
Once your group has a plan, send it to Mr. Grabowski at grabown@brightonk12.com. Have questions or need help brainstorming? Feel free to reach out to Mr. Evans, Mrs. Richards, Mrs. Napuli, or Mr. Grabowski—we’re here to help!

Let’s make February unforgettable by leading with kindness in everything we do. Together, we can make a difference at BHS! Thank you for spreading kindness and respect for everyone!

Academic Wall of Fame Pictures - March 3rd

On Tuesday, March 3rd our Senior students who finished the 1st Semester with a cumulative GPA of 4.0 or higher will be getting their pictures taken for the Academic Wall of Fame. Eligible students received an email from Mr. Grabowski inviting them to sign up for a time slot on this day to get their picture taken in Room B-1. This is an outstanding accomplishment and we are extremely proud of their hard work and academic success! There is absolutely NO charge for the photo, all that we ask is that students dress professionally for the picture. These pictures will be proudly displayed on our Academic Wall of Fame display case for the entire 2026-2027 school year!

Upcoming Construction: I-96 at Grand River Avenue - Project Update

Please see the information below from the engineers of the I-96 at Grand River Ave. Construction Project Update:

After what seems like a short winter break, we’re getting ready to begin the second year of work on the I-96 at Grand River Avenue DDI project.

Although there are differences in construction staging and the way traffic will be maintained, this year’s work is essentially a mirror image of the work completed last year. We will reconstruct a portion of EB I-96, the EB I-96 bridge over Grand River Ave, and the south half of the DDI interchange including the EB I-96 on and off ramps. The following is a high-level overview of the major stages you can expect for this summer’s work. Please bear in mind that these are rough timelines and more specific dates will be provided as they become known.

Early March

  • EB I-96 will be shifted to the WB I-96 roadbed. Just like last year, 2 lanes of I-96 traffic will be maintained in each direction.
  • The EB Grand River Ave to EB I-96 on-ramp (loop ramp) will close for the summer.
    • EB I-96 Detour: Hilton Rd, Old US-23, Spencer Rd to EB I-96
  • The remaining EB I-96 on and off-ramps will remain open.
  • The WB I-96 on and off ramps will remain open all season.

Mid-March

  • The bridge carrying EB I-96 over Grand River Ave will be demolished over the course of 2-3 nights. This will require nightly full closures of Grand River Ave.
    • EB Grand River Ave Detour: Hilton Rd, Old US-23 to Grand River Ave
    • WB Grand River Ave Detour: EB I-96, Spencer Rd, WB I-96 to Grand River Ave

Mid-Late March

  • WB Grand River Ave will be reduced to one lane between Challis Rd and I-96. Two lanes will be maintained on EB Grand River Ave. Left turns from the EB I-96 off ramp to WB Grand River Ave will be prohibited. This configuration will be very similar to last year and will be in place for most of the summer.
    • EB I-96 to WB Grand River Ave Detour: EB I-96, Spencer Rd, WB I-96 to Grand River Ave

Mid-June to Mid-July

  • WB Grand River Ave will be completely closed between the EB I-96 on-ramp and the WB I-96 off ramp. Two lanes will be maintained along EB Grand River Ave. The EB I-96 on and off-ramps to Grand River Ave will remain open.
    • WB Grand River Ave Detour: EB I-96, Spencer Rd, WB I-96 to Grand River Ave
  • It is anticipated that overnight full closures of Grand River Ave to place beams on the new EB I-96 bridge will take place toward the latter part of this stage as well.

Mid-July to Late August

  • The EB I-96 off-ramp to Grand River Ave will be closed for approximately 50 days. WB Grand River Avenue will have been reopened to one lane by this time.
    • Grand River Ave Detour: EB I-96, Spencer Road, WB I-96 to Grand River Ave

Late September to Mid-November

  • The EB I-96 on-ramp will be closed for approximately 50 days.
    • EB I-96 Detour: WB Grand River Ave, Hilton Road, Old US-23, Spencer Road to EB I-96.

We expect the project to wrap up for the winter by mid-November with all lanes of I-96 traffic back in their original configuration and Grand River Avenue operating as a Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI). I will continue to provide more detailed information as the season progresses and will continue to update the project Facebook page as well I-96 Brighton Project Page.

2026 Champions for Children Nominations Now Open

2026 Champions for Children Nominations Now Open

Annual awards recognize individuals/organizations making a positive impact on local kids

Howell, MI – Do you know someone making the community a safer, stronger, better place for children to grow and thrive? LACASA Center’s CAP (Child Abuse Prevention) Council and Great Start Livingston/Help Me Grow Livingston are now accepting nominations for the annual Champions for Children awards. As a part of the National Child Abuse Prevention Month in April, these awards recognize the individuals and organizations whose positive impact is reflected in the lives of the children and families around them.

“Whether it’s a coach, a teacher, a mentor, or a nonprofit, we all know someone or some organization going the extra mile to support children,” said Great Start Livingston/Help Me Grow Livingston Coordinator Robin Schutz. “The Champions for Children Award seeks to recognize them and lift up their stories, so we encourage community members to nominate the individuals or organizations helping children grow, learn, and thrive.”

“Child abuse prevention goes far beyond simply identifying and protecting kids in abusive homes,” said LACASA CAP Council Coordinator Holly Naylor. “Being a stable, encouraging adult for children experiencing turmoil, offering a safe and welcoming environment for struggling children and families, and reaching out to support parents can make a huge impact on a child’s life but these efforts often go unrecognized. We invite you to shine a light on these advocates of children and families so that we can all thank them for their dedication.”

A selection committee will review all nominations and choose this year's award recipients. The nominators of the winners will have the honor of presenting the award at the annual Plant a Pinwheel event on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, at noon at the Howell Carnegie Library.

“This special moment empowers the nominator to speak from the heart about how a Champion has impacted children's lives,” Schutz said. “Their stories bring the honorees’ impact to life and highlight the inspiring work they do every day, and we look forward to recognizing both the nominators and the recipients at our Plant a Pinwheel event.”

Nominations will be accepted through Monday, March 16, 2026.

To nominate an individual Champion for Children, click here: https://forms.gle/1HpmLqhkL92f4vp2A.

To nominate a group or organization, click here: https://forms.gle/AD9bVV573Q7sHv6u9.

LACASA’s CAP Council and Great Start Livingston/Help Me Grow Livingston strongly encourage anyone submitting a nomination to hold the time and day of the award presentation in case their nominee is selected as one of this year’s winners.

For any questions or to make a nomination via email please contact the CAP Council at capcouncil@lacasacenter.org or call (517) 548-1350 for more information.

About CAP Council

The CAP Council is a program of LACASA and is a designated local council of Children Trust Michigan. CAP programs are funded, in part, by the Livingston County United Way.

Tutoring Options at BHS

National Honor Society's After School Tutoring is underway! If your student is in need of extra help, we encourage them to reach out to the teacher first, as they will be the best resource, but have shared this option with them as well, so please feel free to do the same. NHS students will be available to tutor students in room B-1 from 2:30-3:30 on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Tutoring is free of charge. For more information about after school tutoring or for a list of NHS students who are willing to tutor, go to https://bit.ly/BrightonNHSTutoring Please note: our after school tutor will leave at 2:45 if no students have arrived by then.

In addition to After School Tutoring, we have another tutoring resource available for our students. Every year, the BHS Counseling Office generates a list of adult tutors that can be shared with students and families as an additional option if After School Tutoring doesn't work for them for any reason. These tutors have reached out and asked to be on our tutoring list as a resource to BHS students and families. They have self-reported their qualifications. All adults who are not BAS teachers have passed a background check. It is the responsibility of the students and families to find the best tutor for them, arrange meetings, and make payment.

The 2025-26 Tutor List can be found here.

Donald P. Pobuda Memorial Scholarship Program

The Livingston Sunrise Rotary Foundation would like to provide the following information on their Donald P. Pobuda Memorial Scholarship Program. Additional information as well as the application for the scholarship can be found here.

Don Pobuda was a founding member, board member and third President of the Livingston Sunrise Rotary Club in Brighton, Michigan. He inspired those with whom he came in contact to become better persons and always “think outside the box.”

If one’s life could be summarized into three words, for Don it would have been family, education and

community. Don was an advocate for youth and dedicated his professional life to education as a teacher, counselor, coach and superintendent. He touched the lives of thousands of young people during his 30 years of education.

Once retired, Don’s quest to help others continued. He served as Interim Superintendent in 6 different school districts in Michigan as well as Interim City Manager in the City of Brighton. Don served as President of his condo association, Chairman of the Genoa Township Planning Commission, as a SCORE counselor and on the St. Patrick Parrish Education Commission.

Don spent the final 3 years of his life living with leukemia. However, only very few close to Don even knew about his battle with this disease as Don continued his service to others as if there was nothing amiss. In fact, the most heard phrase at Don’s funeral was, “I didn’t even know Don was sick.” This was a tribute to the kind of man Don was to all who knew him: a man of integrity, kindness and loyalty, putting others needs ahead of his own.

We want to memorialize Don by awarding the scholarship to an individual who has overcome obstacles, physical or otherwise, to excel. The scholarship will be open to any senior graduating from a Livingston County High School and continuing on for post high school education, either academic or vocational.
