From the TECH Department From the TECH Department

5th grade has been working on learning how to leverage their iPads with controlling our Dash robotics. They went through an initial lesson on safe handling and how to connect. They are currently working on how to use the basics of coding to send commands to the robotics. As the kids' skills grow, they will transition to a more advanced app in which they will use block coding to send commands to the robots.

The art room kicked the year off with some choice art making, tapping into students' internal desire to express while we worked on learning routines and expectations! Now students are moving into a drawing unit where 5th graders will be creating their own version of Riley’s personality map...

Dear West Shore School District Community,

October is National Bullying Prevention Month. As a school community, we want to encourage everyone to stay informed about the signs of bullying, the impact it can have, and what to do if you see it happening.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) defines bullying as behavior that is:

  • Unwanted: The behavior is not wanted by the victim.
  • Aggressive: The behavior involves some form of aggression, such as physical force, threats, or intimidation.
  • Repeated: The behavior happens more than once or has the potential to happen again.

Acts of bullying may involve physical contact, words or gestures, or social exclusion. Bullying can happen in person or online.

The signs of bullying include:

  • Physical signs: bruises, cuts, torn clothing, missing items
  • Emotional signs: changes in mood, withdrawal from friends and activities, anxiety, depression
  • Behavioral signs: aggressive behavior, changes in eating or sleeping habits, truancy
  • Social signs: being excluded from activities, being made fun of or called names

If you see bullying happening, it's important to do something. Here are some things you can do:

  • Talk to the bully and tell them to stop.
  • Talk to the victim and offer your support.
  • Report the bullying to a trusted adult, such as a teacher, counselor, or parent.

If you or someone you know is being bullied, there are resources available to help:

  • The National Bullying Prevention Center
  • The Trevor Project
  • StopBullying.gov

Together, we can create a safe and supportive school community for all students!

Sincerely,

West Shore School District

Home/School Compact Home/School Compact

Working Together . . . Educating our Children

A compact is an agreement that invites those involved to set common goals, provide direction, and enrich the quality of life. This compact is designed to merge our resources to create one learning family. Instruction in quality schools is central to quality education, but quality education cannot be fully realized without the involvement of the family. Through this home and school partnership, students will receive reading opportunities to achieve success. The following is our pledge to each other, and, most importantly, our children:

School will recognize the importance of:

• providing a safe, nurturing, educational climate.

• making students the center of the educational process.

• improving student attitude toward school with an emphasis on self-responsibility.

• encouraging innovation and make changes as guided by sound research.

• communicating and problem solving with parents concerning the progress of their children.

• providing students with the necessary tools to successfully communicate in all areas of learning.

• honoring requests by parents for information regarding teachers' qualifications, certification, or degree.

Parents/Guardians will recognize the importance of:

• providing an environment conducive for study.

• limiting television viewing and encourage reading activities.

• maintaining proper nutritional requirements for success in school.

• communicating and problem solve with their children's teachers.

• providing all types of reading opportunities and materials.

• stressing a positive attitude toward learning, including the building of a strong foundation of early learning skills.

Students will recognize the importance of:

• coming to school prepared to learn.

• always giving their best.

• reading daily for pleasure.

• keeping a positive attitude and communicate a need for help or assistance.

• following classroom and school rules in order to help promote a safe learning environment.

• turning off electronic devices at a designated time.
