Horace Mann Elementary 2026-27 School Year

Frequently AskedQuestionsHorace Mann Elementary 2026-27 School Year

Welcome Back Horace Mann Family and Friends!

Dear Families,

I want to extend a heartfelt welcome to each of you as we kick off another exciting school year! I am thrilled to share that our district has made significant investments to upgrade and enhance our historic building. We have brand-new windows installed throughout the school, meaning our students will enjoy crisp, clear views, functional ventilation, and no more chilly drafts! We also have a new digital sign out front to keep you updated on upcoming events. These wonderful upgrades perfectly complement our previous renovations, including our fresh sidewalks, new fencing, upgraded playground, and modernized bathrooms.

With these fresh updates, it is officially "Game On" at our school! This year’s theme, “Game On—Where every move matters,” reflects our commitment to helping students grow into strategic thinkers. Just like master players, our learners will utilize their background knowledge, think critically, and use problem-solving skills to conquer new challenges. We invite you to be an active partner on our team this year. Your involvement and support are the ultimate winning strategy for your child's success, and together, we will help our students reach their highest potential.

Game On! Make Every Day Game Day!

Kindergarten Academy

Kindergarten Academy is a new way of thinking about how to start kindergarten. This approach allows all educators to assess and sort students into balanced classes based on their individual needs, abilities, and learning styles. During the first week of school, students will rotate to all kindergarten classrooms throughout the day. By observing student needs, friendships, and interactions early on, "right fit" classrooms can be developed for all students!

Our kindergarteners will be assigned to a classroom teacher on Thursday, Sept. 3rd. Parents and students will be able to meet the assigned teacher and join Dojo at this time. This reveal party will take place prior to dismissal on Thursday, September 3rd from 2:30-3:30 pm in the HM Gym.

Medicine Drop Off

If your child needs to take medicine at school we encourage you to drop it off early. The nurse will be available starting on Monday, Aug. 17th with the exception of a few scheduled meetings. Please be sure to bring the prescription and over-the-counter medication authorization form linked below. The nurse can help you fill it out and fax it to the doctor's office for authorization if needed. Remember over the counter meds require a doctor’s order as well.

HEALTH SERVICES:

Immunization Requirements, Health Action Plans, and Medication Authorizations

  • Immunizations - Remember that students CANNOT attend school the FIRST day without an up-to-date immunization record or proper exemption on file. Students who already have an up-to-date immunization record on file or exemption, do NOT have to submit them again. If you have not already done so, get these completed and the immunization record or exemption to the school nurse ASAP. We want all students to be able to attend the first day! To learn more about required immunizations, go to the Health Services page on the district website by clicking HERE
  • New Prescription Authorization or EAP (Emergency Action Plan) - must be completed each school year. This includes all over-the-counter medications, as well. If you will have medication to drop off for the 26-27 school year, the nurses will be in their buildings before the first day of school. Please plan to drop off all medication and inhalers prior to the first day of school. This will allow for a smoother first day for everyone. You can access the prescription authorization and other health forms on our district website under Health Services.
  • Finally, if your child has a health condition, be certain to advise their nurse and school bus driver, so they have awareness in case of an emergency.

Checking your student's vaccination compliance

  • We are asking parents to check their Infinite Campus Parent Portal to ensure their student is showing as compliant for vaccinations and ready to go for the first day of school.
  • Infinite Campus Parent Portal: https://sedalia.infinitecampus.org/campus/portal/parents/sedalia.jsp
  • Go to Menu>More>Health>Immunizations>
  • If there is any red stating "non compliant," this means that your school nurse does not have the most up-to-date records needed for your student. If that is the case, we ask that you provide the school nurse with an updated shot record (or ask your family doctor's office to do so) as soon as possible.

What are the Arrival Procedures on the First Day of School?

When students arrive on the first day of school, they will enter through the gymnasium doors. We will have a welcome table to check in if they forgot their homeroom teacher's name with staff escorting students into the gymnasium to meet their teacher. Each grade level will have a designated area for students to gather. There will be signage for each grade level/classroom in the gym. We have an assigned color to each grade level:

  • Kindergarten - Red
  • 1st Grade - Orange
  • 2nd Grade - Yellow
  • 3rd Grade - Green

Parents may accompany their child to the Gymnasium front entrance on the first day of school to say goodbye and hand them off to staff who will help students identify their classroom teacher and will escort them to the designated grade level area.
