Come and Get Your Love

Message from Mrs. Garcia

Our Building Focus

1.) Implementation of our Behavior Management System

2.) Improving our culture through trust and communication

3.) Strengthen our Tier 1 Core Instruction

RHIS Families,

It has been a busy few months. We have been working and putting most of our efforts in instruction and curriculum. We are lucky to be working with the state (TASN/MTSS) on helping and guiding us to improve as a district. This has been beneficial in many ways. These discussions at the district level are trickling down to our teachers and students.

We are currently preparing for our Parent Teacher Conferences on Tuesday, October 15th and October 17th. Please use this LINK to sign up for your child's conference. Please sign up for 1-20 minute conference.

Feel free to email me anytime at ngarcia@usd394.com

Thanks,

Mrs. Garcia

October- Grading Practices

We decided to change our grading practices to be more aligned with the rest of our district. As we are transitioning, there are some growing pains. Our teachers and students are learning how to give grades and what to give grades on. We have had several conversations on how this will look and what impact it will have on teachers, students, and families. Grading in 3rd-5th grade typically involves a mix of formative and summative assessments to gauge student progress. Formative assessments, such as quizzes, classwork, and exit tickets, provide ongoing feedback and help guide instruction. Summative assessments, like end-of-unit tests or projects, are used to evaluate mastery of specific content.

Traditional Letter Grades (A-F)

Teachers assign grades based on percentage scores from assignments, tests, quizzes, and class participation.

  • A: 90-100%
  • B: 80-89%
  • C: 70-79%
  • D: 60-69%
  • F: Below 60%

We will also be giving Effort grades that reflect our school mantra:

R- Responsibility

H-Having Ownership

I-Impactful

S-Safe

We do know these things:

  • It’s important that both students and parents understand the grading criteria.
  • Grading should be consistent across teachers and classrooms to ensure fairness.
  • Encouraging a growth mindset by rewarding improvement and effort alongside mastery of skills can motivate students to keep learning.

We have been having constant conversations about student learning, instruction, and improving our use of curriculum. We have updated our grading card to reflect these changes. This is a process and it is taking a lot of effort on everyone's part. We appreciate it. The end goal is to create the best learning environments for our students and teachers. We want to be successful but to do so we have to start talking about why we are not.
