Keeping Our Children Safe: Recognising and Reporting Abuse
Dear Parents,
At St Anthony's School, we are fully committed to the safety and well-being of our students. Through the implementation of the "Keeping Safe Child Protection Curriculum," we aim to empower our children with essential knowledge and skills to protect themselves from abuse and cultivate a secure and supportive school community. Your active involvement in continuing these conversations at home is invaluable, as it reinforces the lessons learned at school and creates a strong foundation for their safety and well-being. Together, we can equip our children with the tools they need to navigate the world confidently and safely. Thank you for your unwavering support in this crucial endeavour.
One of the four focus areas of the curriculum is “Recognising and Reporting Abuse”. Here are some key points from this focus area that you can support your child in understanding:
- Using Correct Body Part Names: Encourage your child to know and use the correct names for all body parts, including sexual/private ones. Open communication helps remove taboos and empowers children to speak up if they feel uncomfortable.
- Respecting Boundaries: Help your child understand that their whole body is private, and nobody has the right to touch them without their permission. Teach them the difference between safe and unsafe touching.
- Empowering Assertiveness: Encourage your child to practice saying "No" and "Stop it" if they feel unsafe or uncomfortable with any form of touch.
- Recognising Abuse: Discuss different forms of abuse (physical, emotional, sexual, neglect) and teach your child to identify warning signs, such as being hurt, witnessing others being abused, or receiving inappropriate touches.
- Seeking Help: Ensure your child knows who they can approach in the community if they feel lost or unsafe. Trusted adults like police officers, shopkeepers or bus drivers can be a source of support.
- Internet Safety: Teach your child how to use the internet safely and respectfully under supervision. Ensure they understand the importance of not sharing personal information online.
- Safe and Unsafe Secrets: Explain the difference between safe secrets, like surprise birthday presents, and unsafe secrets, like sexual touching or threats. Encourage them to share any concerns with a trusted adult.
By working together, we can create a safe and nurturing environment for our students. Thank you for your ongoing support in this vital initiative.
Warm regards,
Mike Barns

Principal's Message
Next Tuesday is the feast of the first Australian saint – St Mary of the Cross MacKillop. Mary MacKillop was born in Melbourne (Australia) in 1842 and died in Sydney on August 8, 1909. She took the religious name Mary of the Cross. Responding to the isolation of colonial families, she started a new form of religious life to provide education for these children. She and her sisters shared the life of the poor and the itinerant, offering special care to destitute women and children. She is remembered for her eagerness to discover God's will in all things, for her charity in the face of defamation by the hierarchy of the Church in Australia, and for her abiding trust in God's providence.
School Census
The Australian Government school census will be held this Friday, August 4. As with any absence from school, if your child is not attending school tomorrow please send a note as soon as possible explaining their absence.
God Bless

Faith In Action
The Solemnity of Mary McKillop - 8th August
Ever-generous God,
You inspired St Mary MacKillop
to live her life faithful
to the Gospel of Jesus Christ
and constant in bringing hope.
and encouragement
to those who were disheartened, lonely, or needy.
With confidence in your generous providence
and joining with St Mary MacKillop, we ask that you grant our request….(name your request).
We ask that our faith and hope.
be fired afresh by the Holy Spirit so that we too,
