Math

We are so excited for 6th Grade Math!

We kicked of the school year by getting to know one another, and establishing community. Coming soon, we will create social contracts in each class period, identifying what the core values are for each class.

On 8/26, students took the 6th Grade Readiness Assessment to review concepts from 5th grade. We reviewed decimal place value, and multiplication/division with decimals to prepare us for our first topic- Use Positive Rational Numbers. You can review what students will be learning (as well as access resources to support your student) below. We are so excited for what is to come, and can't wait to see what the kids can do!

ELA

What a great first week in 6th Grade ELA! 💙💚 We’ve spent our first days getting to know one another, building our classroom communities, and laying the foundation for a successful year ahead.

We kicked off the year with a little teacher investigation, giving students the opportunity to explore our classrooms, look for clues, and use evidence and context clues to make inferences about their teachers. Students then turned the focus inward by writing a letter to their future sixth-grade selves—a letter they’ll revisit later in the year to reflect on their growth and see just how far they’ve come!

A big part of our first week has been establishing the kind of classroom community we want to create together. Through our social contracts, students worked collaboratively to identify the core values that will guide our classrooms and help make them spaces where everyone feels safe, respected, valued, and ready to learn. By giving students a voice in shaping our classroom communities from the very beginning, we’re setting the stage for a year of meaningful learning and growth.

And now, we’re jumping right into our new HMH Into Literature curriculum! Our first unit, “Discovering Your Voice,” asks students to consider the essential question: What are the ways you can make yourself heard? Throughout the unit, students will explore how authors and individuals use different forms of expression to communicate ideas, experiences, and perspectives. They’ll read a variety of literary and informational texts, analyze how authors develop their messages, collaborate with classmates, and begin thinking about how their own voice can be used to make an impact. You can read more about Unit 1 by clicking the following: Unit 1 Information

We’re off to a great start, and we’re excited to spend the year helping our students find, develop, and confidently use their voices!

Science

Welcome to 6th Grade Science! Welcome, scientists! 🔬🌎 We are excited to kick off a new year of exploring, questioning, investigating, and discovering in 6th Grade Science! This year, students will have opportunities to think like real scientists, conduct investigations, collaborate with classmates, and make sense of the world around them. Get ready for a year full of curiosity, creativity, and a little bit of scientific mess! We can’t wait to see what our scientists discover this year!

Social Studies

In social studies we are working on introducing students to inquiry skills they will be using and refining all year. This first week and next week, students are learning about compelling questions, how to write a claim and explain the reasoning behind their claim and how to use evidence to support their claim. Then we will be traveling back in time to the Prehistoric era and learning about the Agricultural Revolution and how the first civilizations grew in river valleys all over the world.

Writing

In Writing Class, students are developing social contracts that build trust, encourage risk-taking, and foster a supportive culture for learning. With a solid foundation in place, students will transition into an initial writing conventions unit, focusing on foundational mechanics and grammar to give every writer the tools and confidence to share their voice clearly.

Electronics Policy Electronics Policy

Cell Phone/Electronic Device Use

House Bill 208 of the 2025 legislative session amended KRS 158.165 to require schools and districts to adopt policies that "at a minimum, prohibit a student's use of a personal telecommunications device during instructional time." While the school policy has not changed, it is now a law that cell phones are prohibited.

  • Beginning at 8:40 (or entry to the building)

  • The use of cell phones and other electronic devices (including headphones/earbuds of any type) is prohibited during the school day. Students may keep their cell phones in their lockers and turn them off throughout the school day.

  • When a student is caught using an electronic device, the teacher will take the device and put it in a tan envelope and send it to the front office. At the end of the day a teacher will be in the office to return all confiscated devices.

  • Headphones/earbuds are NOT ALLOWED in any common area (gym, cafeteria, hallway, library, ect.) during the school day unless authorized by the teacher during THAT class period.

Students in violation of the school procedure for cell phones and other electronic devices will be subject to the following:

1st offense: The device will be confiscated and sent to the office where it can be picked up by the student in the office at the end of the day.

2nd offense: The device will be confiscated and sent to the office where it will need to be picked up by a parent (guardian).

3rd offense: The device will be banned from school for the remainder of the school year.

4th (or more) offense: Administration discretion

*Electronics violations will be reset after winter break.
