The annual election for the Center School District Board of Education will take place on Tuesday, April 2, 2024. There are two seats open, and three candidates have filed for election. The candidates are Mariah Roady, Michael Sarver, and Da'Jion Lymore.
As a service to our community, we are sharing information from each of the candidates about why they are running and why they believe that they are qualified to serve our community in this very important role. We have a video interview for each candidate talking with Ms. Avery Bennekin, a CHS senior and member of the HiveTV broadcast journalism team. That it followed by a written statement provided by each candidate.

Fentanyl Awareness Community Forum
Fentanyl kills.
It kills people of all races, income status, and ages. It kills people who don't even know that they are taking it.
On Thursday, February 22nd, Center High School hosted a panel discussion sponsored by Congressional Representatives Emmanuel Cleaver and Mark Alford. The panel consisted of parents who have lost children to Fentanyl, members of law enforcement who are trying to stop the flow of the drug, first responders who shared stories and options for treatment, and counselors who help people learn how to avoid drug use altogether.

Center Woodshop Students Support our Veterans
Center High School students in the Advanced Woodshop class are doing a Real World Learning Service Project for the residents of Veteran's Community Project (VCP). They are building 49 Adirondack chairs, one for each of the tiny homes occupied by homeless veterans at 89th & Troost. VCP has received national acclaim for their work with veterans, which started in Kansas City in 2016. They provide homes for veterans in their tiny homes. In addition to the home, VCP provides wraparound services to support the unique needs of homeless veterans including food, counseling, employment assistance and much more. The students visited VCP to see how their chairs would be used. They are working on the chairs as their class service project. Last Saturday, a group of the veterans came to visit to see the process and lent their hands to assist with sanding and staining. It was wonderful to see the intergenerational teamwork with students and veterans.
Check out this story produced by KCTV to learn more about the project.
