🍎 HAPPY NATIONAL PRINCIPALS MONTH! 🍎
October is a time to recognize the incredible school leaders who show up every day to support students, staff, families, and their communities. Our principals do so much more than lead from the front—they listen, encourage, problem-solve, celebrate successes, navigate challenges, and keep students at the heart of every decision.

Piedmont Valley Elementary Principal - Mr. Ethan Dschaak
To our Piedmont Valley Elementary Principal, Ethan Dshaak : Mr. Dschaak has been an administrator with the Meade School District for 22 years! 🎉 He started his administrative career in 2004 as the Sturgis Elementary/Sturgis Williams Middle School assistant principal and served in that role through 2009. Apparently, being busy wasn’t enough, because during those years he also took on the role of head basketball coach! 🏀
In 2009, Mr. Dschaak made the move to Piedmont Valley Elementary, where he became principal—and, 17 years later, he’s still there! We’re guessing he must really like the place… or they just haven’t let him leave yet! 😉
Thank you, Mr. Dschaak, for 22 years of leadership, dedication, and service to Meade School District! We appreciate you—not just in October, but all year long! 👏
PVE/STAGEBARN ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL - MRS. MELISSA THIENES
To our Piedmont Valley Elementary Assistant Principal, Melissa Thienes: This is her first year with the District, so she’s officially the new kid on the block—but with some very familiar South Dakota roots! 😉
She began her career as a classroom teacher in Washington, where she developed a passion for supporting diverse learners and using culturally responsive teaching practices.
A graduate of Wall and a former elementary student in Enning, SD, she’s excited to return to her roots, and serve the students, families, and staff at PVE & SMS.
PUBLIC PRESENTATIONS FOR 4-DAY SCHOOL WEEK
Meade School District 46-1 invites the public to attend any one of the upcoming presentations as we continue exploring the possibility of a 4-day school week.
The presentations will include:
An overview of the work completed to date
Known results from the parent/community surveys
A sample 4-day school week schedule
Answers to questions available at that time
We encourage families, staff, and community members to attend, learn more, and share their thoughts.
Please note, the October 13 board presentation takes place during the regularly scheduled School Board Meeting so seating will be limited.
PICTURE RE-TAKE DAY
Please notify your childs teacher if your student needs picture retakes!
How picture retakes work:
If you ordered a picture package and you didn't like the photo, simply send that packet to school with your student and they will give it to the photographer when they take their picture. You will receive the exact same picture package, but with the new photo, once we receive them at the school.
If you missed the original picture day, you can either fill out an order form and have your student give it to the photographer, or you can order online. Your picture packet will be sent home once we receive it at the school.
* NOT ALL STUDENTS WILL PARTICIPATE IN RE-TAKE PICTURES. ONLY STUDENTS WHO NEED RETAKES WILL HAVE THEIR PICTURE TAKEN.
