News from the SMS Library
Congratulations on a great season to our SMS Battle of the Books team! We participated in the state competition on February 25. SMS hosted the Bryant, Great Lakes and Northern Lights Elementary BOB teams this year too. The State Battle takes place the last full week of February every year. Schools can take the online test at any time during that window. State results are announced later in March. Our SMS team had 51 students this year. Four students were chosen to represent our school and worked together to answer 35 challenging questions about the 20 books on the list. Students have been reading and studying the books since September. The four students on our state team are: Kenly Peterson, grade 8; Hadley Murray, grade 7; Lydia Schiff, grade 7; and Hazel Kuhlman grade 7.
Counselor Corner
The Miriam Webster dictionary defines the following:
Transition tran·si·tion Noun: a change or shift from one state, subject, place, etc. to another
Transition takes place many times over our children’s lives. Learning to talk, to walk, and to read are some of the big milestones. Another big transition is moving from one grade level to another. Currently we are in the process of planning for the arrival of our new 6th graders, while at the same time, we are readying our 8th graders for high school. Our 8th graders are already registered for their 9th grade classes, have had high school counselor visits, and are receiving information about all the exciting opportunities high school offers. During the week of March 17, Upward Bound will be presenting information and recruiting students to the program. Follow this LINK for more information. On May 7 Superior High School will host an open house for incoming freshmen. Be sure to mark this date on your calendar!
As parents, transitions bring on a whole bunch of emotions, from scared to excited and everything in between. Our job as adults is to prepare them for a smooth transition. Our time of parenting is fleeting but the lessons we teach will last a lifetime.
Healthy Minute
Artificial Food Dyes!
Research shows that the many synthetic colored dyes used in food can cause harmful health effects, particularly in children. Colors such as Red #40 or Red 3, Blue 1, Yellow 5 and others are amongst the ingredient list that can cause an increase in attention difficulties, negative behaviors, and attention deficit disorders (ADD/ADHD). These food dyes are found in so many of the foods our children (and adults) eat daily, such as cereals/granola bars, yogurts, sports beverages/juices, various chips, candies, and SO many more. If your child seems to have attention difficulties, behavioral outbursts out of the ordinary, or is taking medication related to hyperactivity, it may be worth looking into the everyday foods they are consuming. If you cut out or even cut back on the amount of processed foods containing artificial dyes, you may notice a pleasant difference in their overall mood. Read labels, have conversations with your child, and give it a try!
Students earn Spartan Tickets for showing Work, Respect, Belong behavior. They are able to use those tickets to purchase items in the Spartan Store. If you would like to contribute, here is the wishlist.
Attendance Matters!
Class starts each day with students in classrooms by 7:55am. The warning bell rings at 7:50am. To see if your child has been tardy to any of their classes, check PowerSchool to view your child’s attendance. If you see any errors, please contact Ms. Charity.
**Our school day ends at 3:06pm. Unless your student is registered for an after school activity, they must leave the building by 3:30pm.**
