Introducing: Profile of a Zephyr Introducing: Profile of a Zephyr

The Profile of a Zephyr is a graduate profile developed by the Whitehall-Coplay School District that outlines the ten essential traits every student is expected to possess by graduation. These ten traits—adaptable, collaborative, communicative, confident, creative, critical thinker, empathetic, leader, responsible, and problem solver—were chosen to ensure students are prepared for life beyond the classroom. The profile is named after the district's mascot, the Zephyr, which represents a gentle, west wind, symbolizing forward movement and change.

The creation of the Profile of a Zephyr was a community-wide effort. The district's steering committee conducted a comprehensive survey of students, staff, families, and local community businesses and stakeholders. This broad outreach was designed to identify the skills and mindsets that the community collectively values and believes are crucial for success in the 21st century. The feedback was analyzed to pinpoint the ten most frequently cited traits, which were then officially adopted as the core components of the profile. This inclusive process ensured the profile reflects the shared aspirations of the entire community, not just the school administration.

The Whitehall-Coplay School District uses the Profile of a Zephyr to create a unified and consistent educational experience across all grade levels and buildings. We intentionally weave these ten traits into the academic curriculum, social-emotional learning programs, and school-wide positive behavior initiatives to build a common language and set of expectations from kindergarten through 12th grade. This integration helps students become familiar with the traits over time, fostering a cohesive and continuous learning environment. The profile serves as a guiding framework for all educational decisions, from curriculum development to professional development for teachers, ensuring that all efforts are aligned toward the goal of producing graduates who embody these characteristics. Ultimately, we are equipping students with the skills they need to thrive in a rapidly changing world, enabling them to succeed not only in college or a career but also as active, engaged citizens.

Profile of a Zephyr Spotlight: Steckel Elementary School Profile of a Zephyr Spotlight: Steckel Elementary School

Incorporating the ten traits of the Profile of a Zephyr is foundational to each building in the Whitehall-Coplay School District. Each month, we will highlight a specific trait and how students throughout the district are exemplifying what it takes to be a successful Zephyr.

A group of students from Steckel Elementary were excited to participate in this year’s PA Invention Convention, where creativity, problem-solving, and innovation took center stage. The team designed O.M.E.U.H., a dynamic, no-cost medical-support concept inspired by the real-world problem of limited and affordable healthcare access. Their playful robot prototype, “George,” helps demonstrate how organized, helpful, and user-friendly their solution aims to be. The invention would offer essential medical services for individuals’ basic needs and is powered through solar energy, making this resource eco-friendly.

Throughout the project, students exemplified adaptability, a key trait in the Profile of a Zephyr. They adjusted their design multiple times based on peer feedback, rethought ideas when challenges arose, and stayed flexible as new information shaped their direction. Their ability to shift plans, collaborate through uncertainty, and embrace change strengthened both their invention and their teamwork. Steckel's team ended up coming in first place at the competition and will be moving onto states in early 2026!

Projects like O.M.E.U.H. highlight how the PA Invention Convention empowers future-ready learners to transform imaginative ideas into practical, meaningful creations. By identifying authentic problems and designing inventive solutions, our students demonstrate the ingenuity, empathy, adaptability, and forward-thinking skills that make innovation such an important part of our gifted program.

Zephyr Zoom In: Zephyr Elementary School Zephyr Zoom In: Zephyr Elementary School

Here at Whitehall-Coplay School District, our classrooms are buzzing with energy as students take on hands-on projects, collaborative learning, and creative challenges. From STEM experiments to artistic endeavors, the spirit of "We Are Zephyrs" shines through in every lesson, reflecting our pride and commitment to excellence.

This school year, Zephyr Elementary's primary focus is on increasing student engagement and deepening learning through the masterful implementation of effective instructional strategies. We are incredibly proud of our staff's commitment to excellence, which is why our building goal is centered around incorporating the powerful techniques championed by educational strategist Weston Kieschnick, and featured in resources like his ATLAS and Pocket PD Strategies.

Our teachers have done an excellent job taking the strategies explored in our professional development, biweekly huddles, and faculty meetings—such as Think-Pair-Share, Concept Mapping, Station Rotation, Quick Writes, and Reciprocal Teaching—and seamlessly weaving them into their everyday lessons. This deliberate, school-wide effort is not just about trying new techniques; it’s about strategically choosing methods that actively involve students in the learning process.

The result? Our hallways and classrooms are buzzing with high-level student interaction and ownership! Through our administrative walkthroughs, we are already documenting a significant increase in the use of these proven methods, which is directly translating to higher student engagement and a noticeable surge in deeper understanding across all grade levels. Zephyr Elementary staff are truly showing what it means to be instructional leaders dedicated to maximizing every student's potential. Keep up the fantastic work!

Zephyr Elementary Reaps What They Sow Zephyr Elementary Reaps What They Sow

Zephyr Elementary is bringing agriculture indoors and providing students with a hands-on learning experience thanks to its innovative Fork Farm unit. For those A Fork Farm is a compact, mobile vertical hydroponic growing system that allows schools to grow fresh produce year-round without soil. The unit uses nutrient-rich water and LED lights to cultivate herbs and vegetables right inside the classroom, turning any space into a vibrant garden and a living science lab.

Recently, the dedicated students and staff at Zephyr Elementary have been busy tending to their latest crop: fragrant basil! The students had the opportunity to monitor the basil's growth from tiny seedlings, learning about plant life cycles, light requirements, and sustainable farming practices. The hard work culminated in a successful harvest, allowing staff to enjoy the fresh basil. This engaging project demonstrates the district's commitment to integrating wellness, nutrition, and STEM education in a fun and tangible way.

Teaching Reimagined: WCSD Helps to Lead the Discussion Teaching Reimagined: WCSD Helps to Lead the Discussion

On November 19th, two members of our WCSD Family presented at the #PANeedsTeachers 2025 Summit hosted by the Pennsylvania Training and Technical Assistance Network (PaTTAN). The Summit provided attendees the opportunity to examine how new approaches to staffing and scheduling can improve work conditions for educators, leverage advanced roles, and support effective instructional models. Attendees collaborated in interactive sessions aimed at generating actionable ideas to shape the #PaNeedsTeachers agenda for 2026 and beyond.

Morgan Polony, a third grade teacher at Steckel Elementary, and Bethany Koenig, Principal of Whitehall-Coplay Middle School, shared the leadership vision for the district through an exploration of the WCSD Teacher Leader Program and its impact on teacher retention. The Teacher Leader Program provides opportunities for staff throughout the district to engage in discussions and committees that are shaping the direction of the district. Polony and Koenig highlighted the challenges that face the teaching profession in general, as well as the unique challenges that WCSD faces and how the Teacher Leader Program addresses those challenges.WCSD is proud of the contribution of Mrs. Polony and Mrs. Koenig to this discussion, and more importantly, for highlighting the systems that the district is utilizing to benefit our students and staff.

Cassandra Herr, Director of Elementary Teaching, Learning, and Technology

Greetings! It is a pleasure to serve as the Director of Elementary Teaching, Learning, and Technology for the Whitehall-Coplay School District. Over the last 19 years in education, I’ve been privileged to work with students and families in a variety of roles. My career in education began as an elementary teacher in a variety of grade levels. Moving into educational leadership, I was extremely proud to serve in an Assistant Principal role for a brief time, followed by numerous years as a building principal in two wonderful schools and districts. I obtained a Bachelor’s Degree from King’s College in Elementary Education, a Master’s Degree from Wilkes University in Classroom Technology, and a Principal Certification from Lehigh University.

I am committed to educational excellence through the development and implementation of high-quality, standards-based curricula. With a strong focus on instructional leadership and collaboration, it is my pleasure to collaborate with teachers, administrators, and the community to support student growth and achievement for every learner. It’s an honor to be part of the Whitehall-Coplay School District!

Meghan Lloyd, Director of Secondary Teaching, Learning, and Technology

Hello! My name is Meghan Lloyd and it is a profound honor to serve the Whitehall-Coplay School District’s students, staff, and our entire community as the Director of Secondary Teaching, Learning, and Technology.

As a member of the Whitehall community myself, I hold a deep personal commitment to the success of our students. My focus is on ensuring we provide every student with a rigorous and meaningful educational experience that empowers them to become successful and contributing members of our community.

My journey in education began at Mount St. Mary's University, where I earned a Bachelor’s of Science in Elementary and Special Education. I later secured a Master’s in Education with an ESL certificate through a partnership between Penn State and the University of Turabo and a subsequent Master’s of Education in Instructional Leadership from Wilkes University.

These foundational experiences, along with 20 years experience as a special education teacher, Multi-Tiered Systems of Support specialist, Assistant Director of Special Education, and now in this leadership capacity has equipped me with a well rounded educational perspective.

I look forward to partnering with all of you to elevate teaching and learning across our secondary schools!

David Stauffer, Supervisor of Teaching, Learning, and Technology

It's a privilege to be part of the Whitehall-Coplay School District community. Since arriving in 2013, I have been continually impressed by our staff's dedication to our students, and I am motivated daily to support their efforts.

I began my career as a Business Teacher, later gaining valuable experience as a Technology Integration Coach at Dieruff High School. Upon joining Whitehall in 2013, I transitioned into the role of K-12 Technology Integration Specialist, where I served until 2021. This experience provided a strong foundation for my move into the Supervisor role in 2021, expanding my focus to include instructional leadership.

My educational background includes a Bachelor’s degree and K-12 Instructional Technology Specialist Certificate from Drexel University, a Master’s degree from Wilkes University, and Principal Certification from Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

My current responsibilities include coordinating professional learning, managing core district technology platforms, and overseeing the Whitehall-Coplay Cyber Academy. I also supervise the BCIT, STEM, Library, and Health/PE departments. Additionally, I oversee annual programs, including the Summer STEM Camp and the Education Community Summit (EdCom) held every August at Whitehall High School.

I look forward to continuing to work alongside our larger community as we strive toward excellence. We are one. We are Zephyrs.

Dr. Bianca McGrath, Director of Special Education

It is my privilege to serve as the Director of Special Education for the Whitehall-Coplay School District. With over 18 years of experience in special education, I am dedicated to fostering inclusive, student-centered programs that promote success for all learners.

Before joining Whitehall-Coplay, I served in various roles at Colonial Intermediate Unit 20, including Special Education Teacher, Program Specialist, Trainer, and Educational Consultant supporting 13 school districts across the region. I hold certifications as a Special Education Teacher, Reading Specialist, Supervisor of Special Education, Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA), and Licensed Behavior Specialist.

My educational journey began at East Stroudsburg University, where I earned both my Bachelor’s degree in Special Education and my Master’s degree in Reading. I continued my studies at Delaware Valley University, completing a Doctorate in Educational Leadership with research focused on promoting inclusive employment pathways for individuals with disabilities.

I am proud to work alongside our talented staff and families to build opportunities that help every student thrive. I value open communication and encourage families and staff to reach out at any time with questions, ideas, or feedback.

Jennifer Stancombe, Assistant Director of Special Education

I have had the pleasure of working with families in the Whitehall-Coplay School District since 2014. I have worked at the High School as a special education teacher for many years before stepping into the Special Education Facilitator role. Before settling my professional roots in Whitehall, I served as a special education teacher in the New Hope-Solebury School District and the Easton Area School District.

My educational background includes a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education with a Minor in Special Education from The Pennsylvania State University, a Master of Education in Special Education from DeSales University, a Master of Science in Instructional Media and Technology from Wilkes University, and a Special Education Supervision Certificate from Slippery Rock University.

As the Assistant Director of Special Education, my biggest goal is simple– to be a true partner in your child's education journey. I deeply believe that the best results come when families, teachers, and the district work together as a team. The world of IEPs and special education services can sometimes feel confusing or overwhelming, but working together as a collaborative team helps your child achieve their greatest potential.

I look forward to the opportunity to continue working with Whitehall families to provide rich and meaningful educational experiences.

I have served the district since 2020, first as a Help Desk Technician and now as the Supervisor of Information Technology. My mission is to ensure that the valuable technology tools and systems supporting our student's education are as responsive, available, and functional as possible. My background in information technology, including practical experience providing end-user support and keeping up with technology trends, helps me lead a team of six dedicated technicians that work alongside building-level tech hubs.
