2nd Grade Weekly Newsletter
August 17th-21st, 2026
MAP TESTING
Your child is scheduled to take the MAP Growth assessments this week in Reading and Math.
Resources website:
https://studentresources.nwea.org/ (select the Grades 2+ option).
MAP READING test on Wednesday, August 19th at 8:00 a.m.
MAP MATH test on Thursday, August 20th at 8:00 a.m.
Testing will begin promptly at 8:00am. Please ensure your child is at school on time.
Assessment results help guide teachers’ reading and math instruction by better understanding what students know and are able to do, where students need support, and what students are ready to learn next. Additionally, student test results may be used as one factor in the gifted and talented identification process.
During test sessions, students may not be in possession of or use any electronic devices (e.g., cell phones, smart watches) other than the device used for testing.

What We're Learning
Math
We will learn to describe what we already know about place value to help us understand and compare numbers to 1,000. We will learn to show and explain how 10 groups of ten equal 100. We will learn to identify and show the digits in a 3-digit number and explain the values of the digits. We will learn to use RAISE strategy to help us better understand and solve math problems.
Reading
We will learn how to identify and describe the main story elements in a reading passage. We will review how to identify characters, setting, problem and solutions. We will also learn how to sequence the important events in a story.
Weekly Spelling Pattern
NO SPELLING TEST THIS WEEK!
This week we will learn about closed syllables-- a syllable that ends in one or more consonants and has a short vowel sound (examples: con • test, nap • kin, up • set). We will also learn the CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant)-- a spelling pattern in which a consonant is followed by a vowel and another consonant that usually signals that the vowel sound is short (sometimes shortened to VC for words such as an and it).
Writing
We will think of ideas for a personal narrative. We will learn to organize a narrative into three parts-the beginning, middle and end. We will learn to draft a narrative by thinking about the elements and organization. We will set clear goals to write a story/narrative well by studying the good writing others have done. We will work with one another to generate ideas for our personal narratives. We will draft a narrative by saying aloud what we want to write, then sketching what we want to write.
Social Studies
We will learn to identify and describe how Americans are different from each other. We will learn to identify elements that make up cultural and ethnic groups and how we work together to promote the common good.
Homework
Spelling
- Please note: This year, 2nd grade teachers will be sending home examples of words to practice, not a list to memorize. Interested in why we are making this shift?
- Click HERE to find out!
Math
- We will begin sending home weekly math review sheets beginning after Labor Day. These do not have any bearing on the overall math grade, but will help your child review concepts so that they stay fresh in their minds.
Reading
- Reading every night is imperative to your child's success in 2nd grade. Your child should be reading for at least 20 minutes every night.
Attendance Information
Attendance Matters!
- Students will only be allowed 10 total absences. Greenville County states that students must be present 170 of 180 days. This can be combination of parent notes, or unexcused absences. A student will be considered TRUANT with 3 consecutive unexcused absences, or 5 total unexcused absences. Chronic absences and tardiness can affect the entire classroom, disrupting the flow of learning. Attending school REGULARLY and ON TIME creates a positive environment for everyone! If a student misses more than 10 days, all additional absences must be medical or principal approved to be classified as an excused absence. We are no longer able to accept text messages or class app messages. Attendance must be communicated through email to your child's teacher, email to Mrs. Rogers, or a physical note in your child's red folder.
Red Folders
Parents, please take the time to fill out ALL the paperwork in red folders and return them to school. We MUST get back the yellow dismissal forms, emergency forms, video release form, enrollment survey and the McKinney Vento form (if applicable). Plan for red folders to come home every day as this is a daily communication folder between parents/teachers. Please check them daily, clear them out of any paperwork and then send them back to school. Thank you!
Student/Parent Backpack
A backpack for parents account provides parents, guardians, or contacts with a central place to sign in to do the following:
- View their student's information including demographics, attendance, classes, grades, lunch balances, and test scores
- Apply or register their student to Special Focus schools and programs (Fine Arts Center, Career Centers, etc.)
- Receive alerts and notifications regarding their students
- View their student's school and contact information
- Manage parent and contact information for their students

Bus Transportation
All students must be registered to ride the bus. Please contact your child’s school to complete a bus request form. Students who are not registered to ride the bus will not be transported.
Bus requests received after July 7 will not be routed for the first day of school. Transportation for late forms will be implemented in the order in which they were received by the Transportation Office beginning the first Tuesday in September. After the first Tuesday in September and during the school year, it may take up to 5 school days to establish transportation.
Ridership status and/or bus stops are subject to cancellation after five (5) consecutive school days of no ridership. If your child will be absent from bus service for more than five (5) days and you’d like to keep their status active, please notify the school office. Students must ride at least once every five (5) days in order to remain active.
Buses are subject to arrive 10 minutes before or after the scheduled time.

Breakfast and Lunch Updates
Visitors at LUNCH
As we begin our school year, we ask that you wait to join your child for lunch until
after Labor Day so that we have time to put all of our routines/procedures in place. Students are not allowed to have 'friends' eat with them and their parent. ONLY parents/child are allowed to eat together during this visitation lunch time.
Breakfast and Lunch Menus
Woodland will be providing free breakfast and lunch to all students again this school year! Please see below for the breakfast and lunch menus for the month.
