Welcome Back: A Year of Transformation and Growth!

As the summer days slowly make way for the crisp air of fall, the Mine Hill School District is bustling with excitement as we gear up for an exceptional new school year. With fresh renovations, exciting initiatives, and a dedicated team, we are thrilled to welcome our students, staff, and community back to the Canfield Avenue School on Tuesday, September 5th.

Renovation Projects Transforming Our Campus

The Mine Hill School District has been hard at work over the summer, revitalizing our learning environment to create an even better space for our students. A complete renovation of the grades K-3 hallway has brought in new floors, doors, ceilings, bathrooms, and lighting, providing our youngest learners with a modern and vibrant atmosphere. The gymnasium floor has been resurfaced, and new wall mats featuring custom logos and panther paws will soon be installed, adding a touch of school spirit to our athletic space. Additionally, a new roof has been installed in the grades 4-6 hallways, ensuring a safe and comfortable environment for our older students. Throughout the 2023-24 school year, we will see the replacement of exterior doors and windows in the older part of the building, further enhancing our building's look and functionality.

Empowering Summer Academies and High Dosage Tutoring

This summer, select students from all grade levels had the opportunity to participate in a four-week accelerated learning program known as the CAS Summer Academy. This program, funded through ESSER (Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief) funds, aimed to strengthen language arts and math skills, providing students with the extra support they need to excel.

Continuing our commitment to academic success, Mine Hill School District is proud to offer 1:1 High Dosage Tutoring. With the help of ESSER funding, students will have access to small group in-person tutoring, 1:1 virtual tutoring from the comfort of their homes, and on-demand tutoring. These resources are designed to address learning gaps, boost academic skills, and foster an environment of continuous learning.

Welcoming New Faces and Roles

We are delighted to introduce both new members of our Canfield Avenue School family, and veteran staff in new roles:

- Mrs. Kellie Savona – 3rd Grade

- Mrs. Hallie Caparoni – New PK Teacher

- Mr. Mike Marini – New Facilities Manager

- Mrs. Luana Bruhn – New Child Study Team Secretary

- Ms. Hannah Gurmankin – Resource Room Teacher gr. 4-6

- Mr. Lansing Holman – Self-Contained Teacher gr. 4-6

- Mrs. Jessica Lopa - CST Case Worker

In addition, please extend a heartfelt welcome to Freddy Arano, Miriam Gonzalez, Maria Herrera, Ruben Martinez, Lucas Mendez, and Marlene Vente, our NEW Mine Hill custodial team members. Under the direction of our new facilities manager, Mr. Michael Marini, this hard working team played a pivotal role in preparing Canfield Avenue School for a successful opening in September. We appreciate their efforts in creating a clean and inviting environment for all students and staff. Thank you for your contributions!

Bringing Services Back for Enhanced Excellence

Recognizing the need for optimal services, Mine Hill School District has taken a bold step to bring back the Child Study Team and Custodial/Maintenance services in-house. This decision ensures that our staff and students receive the best possible care and attention, aligning with our commitment to excellence and minimal impact on the operating budget.

A Year of Promise and Excellence

As we embark on this exciting journey together, we extend our warmest welcome to all students, parents, staff, and community members. The Mine Hill School District is more than just a school; it's a family, a community, and a place of growth and opportunity. We can't wait to see the halls bustling with laughter, the classrooms alive with curiosity, and our newly renovated campus shining bright with promise.

Here's to a year of transformation, growth, and boundless excellence at the Canfield Avenue School. We can't wait to see our staff and students shine on the first day of the 2023-24 School Year, which will be September 5th!

Letter from Mr. Zygmunt

Dear CAS Families,

I hope you’re having an amazing summer! We are really excited to see everyone back in the building on Tuesday, September 5, 2023 for the first day of school!

I'd like to recognize and thank our secretaries, tech person, all of our amazing teachers, and our custodial crew for their hard work this summer to ensure our building and classrooms are fully prepared for a great year. There is so much construction that is happening this summer that will result in amazing upgrades to so many of our classrooms, bathrooms, and offices. This past week, we had 19 of our teachers participate in 4 full days of training focused on creating a positive and engaging classroom community and I know your children will notice these positive changes. We are completely committed to providing your children with the best possible academic, social, and emotional experiences this school year. We look forward to partnering with you every step of the way as it's only through our working together that your children will get the most out of this experience.

I'd like to also welcome our new staff members and staff members in new roles:

  • Mrs. Kellie Savona – 3rd Grade
  • Mrs. Hallie Caparoni – new PK teacher
  • Mr. Mike Marini – new facilities manager
  • Mrs. Luana Bruhn – new Child Study Team Secretary
  • Ms. Hannah Gurmankin – Resource Room Teacher gr. 4-6
  • Mr. Lansing Holman – Self-Contained Teacher gr. 4-6

Annual Registration - All homeroom assignments and student schedules will be in the parent portal after August 21st. All parents (even if you just submitted a new registration) must sign into oncourseconnect and complete the annual registration information beginning August 21, 2023. Please make sure to click through all the menu tabs paying close attention to the spelling of email addresses and telephone numbers. You must complete the registration by signing and dating electronically on the last tab. Once completed, you will be able to access your child’s entire dashboard and schedule.

As you note your classroom assignment, we ask that you trust the CAS professionals' decisions regarding student placement. As classes were put together towards the end of last year, many factors were considered in developing balanced groups including: the range of academic abilities, social mixture, gender balance, individual learning styles, student personality and interaction, students benefiting from being together or separated, overall student behavior, and class size. The objective of this process is to produce a heterogenous group of students to become a community of learners, which promotes students to function to the fullest extent of their abilities. We assure you that the placement of each child has been carefully considered and appreciate your understanding that we cannot honor requests for placement changes at this time.

Finally, the board of education has approved the purchase of school supplies for all students this year. Aside from a backpack and lunch bag, students will be provided with their school supplies. Stay tuned for more detailed information from your child’s teacher. Please make sure to carefully read the chromebook agreement that was in the registration packet and can be found on the school website.

As we get closer to the start of school on September 5th, I will be sending more detailed information out. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out any time.

Sincerely,

Adam Zygmunt
Principal

FREE School Supplies!

The Mine Hill School Board believes that a free and adequate public education should be provided for free! For the second year in a row, the board of education approved the purchase of school supplies for all pupils, relieving families of the stress of shopping for and paying for school supplies. Thank you so much to the board members for making Mine Hill's families and students their first priority!

Summer Professional Development

In a remarkable demonstration of dedication to their craft and their students' well-being, nearly 75% of the Canfield Avenue School's academic homeroom teachers enthusiastically participated in two enriching summer professional development opportunities. These programs not only enhanced their teaching skills but also underlined their commitment to fostering comprehensive growth in students. The teachers eagerly delved into the intricacies of the Responsive Classroom program for social-emotional learning and the innovative Big Ideas Math curriculum, reflecting a profound dedication to delivering a well-rounded education.

The summer professional development workshops allowed our teachers to immerse themselves in the principles and practices of the Responsive Classroom approach. They explored strategies to create safe and welcoming learning environments, where emotional intelligence and interpersonal skills are as valued as academic achievements. The program equips teachers with tools to cultivate empathy, self-awareness, and responsible decision-making in students.

The incorporation of the Big Ideas Math program into our curriculum showcases our teachers' unwavering dedication to staying at the forefront of educational advancements. By embracing this innovative approach, our educators are not only nurturing a love for mathematics but also instilling in students the confidence to tackle real-world mathematical challenges.

Mine Hill's teaching staff recognize that education is not confined to the walls of a classroom. It's a dynamic, ever-evolving process that embraces the multifaceted nature of human development. With these new tools and perspectives, our educators are poised to create a positive and lasting impact on the lives of their students, fostering a generation equipped with both knowledge and the emotional intelligence to make a difference.
