What Has Been Happening in Mr. MacLennan's Classroom? What Has Been Happening in Mr. MacLennan's Classroom?

Mr. MacLennan's classes have been working on the topic and study of rational numbers. In doing so students work to apply and extend previous understanding of operations with fractions to add, subtract, multiply, and divide rational numbers. Students are gaining computation experience with how these numbers impact the world around them from weights and measures at the grocery store, to profit and loss in the stock market, as well as calculating the depths below sea level that marine life and humans may travel.

Hispanic Heritage Month Hispanic Heritage Month

Each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15, by celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America.

At Scott, our students and staff have honored our diversity with various projects.

Concerns of Safety at Scott Concerns of Safety at Scott

I have had some families reach out to me in the last couple weeks regarding the safety of their students at Scott. I wanted to take a moment to assure all families that the safety of the students and staff at Scott is my top priority. Staff and students can not do what they need to do each day, which is focus on teaching and learning, if they do not feel physically and emotionally safe.

Aggression of any kind is not tolerated and is punishable according to our code of conduct. If you would like to review the 2024-2025 Code of Conduct, I have included it below. It is also available under the quick links tab on our district website.

If an incident occurs, Mr. Altland or I investigate the details by speaking to those involved, and sometimes check video camera footage if needed. We then work with the students and families involved to discuss consequences, repair the harm done, and discuss steps to move forward.

We have reviewed behavior expectations with the students, and will continue to reinforce them over the course of the school year. Thank you for discussing these expectations at home as well. We appreciate your support.

Respectful Language Respectful Language

There has been a rise in cursing and inappropriate language in the classrooms and hallways recently. Mr. Altland and I spoke to the students during their lunches last week to reinforce the expectation that it is never okay to curse at an adult in our building. If a student chooses to curse at a staff member, they will be suspended, and upon their return will have a restorative meeting with the adult to repair the harm and create a plan to move forward.

We appreciate your support in speaking with your students and reminding them of our core value of respect. Thank you.

Brandywine Red Clay Alliance Field Trips Brandywine Red Clay Alliance Field Trips

Our 6th and 7th graders had the opportunity to spend the day outside in the Brandywine and Red Clay watersheds having fun with friends and team building. All the students and staff that went over the past few weeks had a great time. The staff at Brandywine Red Clay was very impressed with the Scott Middle School students as well. Thank you for representing Coatesville!
