September 2025

Welcome Back, Pioneers,

We’re thrilled to welcome our students back, and our team has been working hard to ensure everything is ready for a fantastic year ahead. From wrapping up construction projects, to setting up classrooms, to planning engaging lessons, we’ve put in a lot of effort to make sure your student has the best experience possible.

As we get started, please be aware that during the first few days there may be some delays with drop-off and pick-up as students adjust to their new routines. It’s normal for buses to run late at first, so please don’t be concerned. We greatly appreciate everyone’s patience as students learn their routines and transportation routes.

As we settle into the school year, it’s important to remember that student safety remains our top priority. Please take time to review the information we’ve included about our safety drills and practices, which help us ensure a safe environment for everyone.

Inside this newsletter, you’ll also find important updates, including:

  • Key safety protocol information

  • Attendance guidelines

  • Key back-to-school dates

  • Information on Early Release — Wednesday, September 10

  • Updates from the nurse

  • Fall sports and activities information

  • Access to the 2025–2026 academic calendar

We’re also excited to share that the School District of Westfield now has a mobile app! The Westfield Pioneer app makes it easy for students, families, and community members to stay connected. From your phone, you can view announcements, check upcoming events, find staff contact information, and access important documents—all in one place.

The app is free and available to download from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store.

School Safety - A Shared Responsibility School Safety - A Shared Responsibility

The safety and well-being of our students are our highest priorities here at the School District of Westfield. We are committed to fostering a nurturing and secure school environment, and we do this through daily interactions and educational opportunities that promote student wellness, internet safety, physical safety, and the development of a positive school community.

Safety also goes beyond daily interactions. Our district continues to invest in facility and structural updates that strengthen security, including secure entrances, updated phone systems, and camera systems and rekeying of doors. These improvements work hand-in-hand with our educational efforts to create a safe and supportive environment.

Student Safety
A critical ingredient in keeping our campuses safe is a uniform response to incidents. Weather events, fires, accidents, intruders, and other threats to student and staff safety are scenarios that are planned for and practiced by school administration. This proactive approach ensures that everyone knows how to respond quickly and effectively in a variety of situations.

The Standard Response Protocol (SRP)
The SRP is the framework our district follows when preparing for emergencies. It is based on an “all-hazards” approach rather than focusing on individual scenarios. The SRP utilizes clear, common language while allowing flexibility in response. This helps staff, students, and first responders communicate and act consistently during an emergency.

One of the fundamental ways we reinforce safety is by teaching our students that it is a shared responsibility. We encourage them with the phrase, “If you see something, say something.” By speaking up, we can all contribute to keeping each other safe.

In addition to building a culture of safety, we also regularly practice emergency drills and procedures throughout the school year. These drills prepare students and staff to respond calmly and effectively in the event of an emergency. They cover a range of scenarios, including:

  • Evacuation procedures

  • Responding to potential threats of violence

  • Handling medical emergencies

  • Responding to natural disasters

Throughout the year, students and staff will participate in monthly drills. During September and October, our students will review each of these scenarios and practice drills, supported by research from the iloveuguys Foundation. We also engage in discussions to help everyone better understand how to respond in the unlikely event of a threat of violence within the school setting.

We kindly request your support in reinforcing these scenarios with your child(ren) in an age-appropriate manner. The skills and knowledge gained from these discussions extend beyond the school day and can be applied in various settings, contributing to the overall safety of our community.

Thank you for your continued partnership in creating a safe and nurturing environment for our students. Together, we can ensure a secure and supportive learning experience for all.
