¡WOW! ¡Qué semana hemos tenido - vimos un Ballet Folklórico, una actuación de Mariachi y tuvimos nuestro Día de la Herencia Hispana! ¡Asombroso! Fue genial ver a las familias participar con sus hijos durante las actuaciones de esta tarde y, por supuesto, ver a todos nuestros estudiantes enorgullecerse de nuestra Celebración de la Herencia Hispana. Esto es, comunidad.

Al comenzar la segunda semana de octubre, revise nuestro calendario escolar, será un mes emocionante. Nuestro Día Internacional/Vuelta a la Escuela es el próximo miércoles 12 de octubre. Tenemos una excursión de 3er grado la semana siguiente (familias de 3er grado, comuníquense con los maestros de sus hijos si desean ser voluntarios). El día de la fotografía también es este mes y muchas otras actividades increíbles. Manténganse al tanto.

Dear Families,

WOW! What a week we have had - we watched a Ballet Folklorico, a Mariachi performance and had our Hispanic Heritage Day! Amazing! It was great to see families participating with their kiddos during the performances this afternoon and of course seeing all our students take pride in our Hispanic Heritage Celebration is what community is all about.

As we begin the second week of October please review our school calendar, it is going to be an exciting month. Our International/Roll to School Day is this coming Wednesday, October 12th. We have a 3rd grade field trip the following week (3rd grade families please reach out to your kiddos’ teachers if you would like to volunteer). Picture day is also this month and many other awesome activities. Stay tuned.

In the last few weeks, you will have noticed that we have added a bell @ 7:55am to help our morning routine. As our school day begins at 8:00am, the first bell at 7:55am is a signal for class lines to enter the building so that the class morning meeting can begin @ 8am. The second bell @ 8am is a signal that classes should begin.

To ensure that teachers can begin class on time, please make sure that your child arrives to school by 7:55am. If your child needs to eat breakfast, please make sure they get to school by 7:45am. Getting to school on time is important as missed school time each day adds up over time. Thank you for your cooperation with this.

The James John School Council is comprised of parents, school staff, and administration and is designed to give input on the school’s instructional program. Please consider joining the James John School Site Council. We need 5 parent representatives. The Site Council meets six times during the school year and will meet following Tuesdays from 5:00-6:30pm (October 18, November 15, January 24, March 14 and May 23) If you are interested, please complete the form below and return to the James John office. For the last seven years I have had the honor to work and serve the north Portland community working in various positions with Portland Public Schools. Since the 2020-2021 school-year, I have served the Sitton and James John Elementary schools as a School Social Worker. Working in this capacity has given me the opportunity to develop a deep bond with many students, families and educators in this community, for which I am forever grateful. This month of October I will start working as a School Social Worker at Bridger Elementary School. In this position, I will be serving closer to my family and the community I live in. Departing from Sitton and James John Elementary certainly was a hard decision to make, and will miss each and everyone of you.

For several years, I have been part of a Mutual Aid network that provides service to some families in the north Portland area. I will continue to provide such services on a monthly basis. I have maintained communication with numerous families in north Portland throughout the years, and this change of position will not change such connections. I am aware of so many needs in the community, and such needs remain and exacerbate as resources become harder to access and to navigate. For those of you who have relied on me for resource navigation, please, do not hesitate to contact me. Although I will not be available to assist you in person, if I have knowledge or access to a resource, I will be happy to share it with you.

Durante los últimos siete años he tenido el honor de trabajar y servir en la comunidad del norte de Portland a través de varias posiciones con las Escuelas Públicas de Portland. Desde el comienzo del año escolar 2020-2021, he trabajado en las Escuelas Elementales de Sitton y James John como Trabajador Social Escolar.
