PSAT
We are giving the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) at Blackfoot High School during the week of October 21st - October 24th. The test is not required, but if they wish to take it they need to sign up during their Sophomore or Junior years. To have your student sign-up for the test they need to go into the Google Classroom for their graduating class (see your counselor with any questions on how to get signed up).
The PSAT/NMSQT is now digital and will be conducted in a computer lab. The test is 2 hours and 45 minutes long and tests skills in reading, writing, and math. It is easier to take, shorter, has more time per question, and comes with a built-in calculator. It can also help students qualify for the National Merit Scholarship Program and other scholarships.
College Applications
College application month is October. Seniors will be applying to the Idaho colleges of their choice.
Ways to help your student:
-Complete a career pathway plan to help get a better idea of careers that match personality
-Start talking about careers, programs and colleges that offer what you are looking for
-Search selected programs at students chosen college to see what the name of the program is
-Take a look at high demand jobs in Idaho at https://lmi.idaho.gov/data-tools/occupations-in-demand/
Library
Students can check books out anytime during regular school hours. Just find a book and take it to the librarian's desk to check out; no activity card needed. Books can be checked out for 2 weeks at a time. Late fees for books this year is .10 cents a day. If you're not sure when a book is due, or need to renew a book, stop in the library and talk to Mrs. Nelson, or email her at nelsange@d55.k12.id.us
Thank You Pony Express
The Pony Express Car Wash put on a fundraiser for the Ballroom Team and the Fillies Dance Team on the 7th. All money made from 12-3 was donated to both teams. It was very beneficial!
**Spanish Class Brings Mexican Market to Life**
In Mrs. Maldonado’s Spanish class, learning took a lively, hands-on approach as students participated in a vibrant simulation of a traditional Mexican market. The goal of the activity was to immerse students in real-world scenarios where they could practice vocabulary related to shopping, bargaining, and engaging in polite conversation—all in Spanish.
Students brought an array of unique items to sell, including handmade paper airplanes, homemade treats, colorful bracelets, and more. The classroom buzzed with energy as students not only worked to sell their products but also negotiated prices with their "customers," adding an authentic element to the exercise. From bartering over prices to discussing the quality of items, the market was a true representation of the dynamic experience one might find in Mexico.
Adding to the authenticity, two community members who are native Spanish speakers joined the class. They played the roles of customers, giving students the invaluable opportunity to practice their Spanish with fluent speakers. Their presence helped students sharpen their conversational skills and grow in confidence as they negotiated and navigated through the marketplace.
This creative and interactive activity provided students with a memorable way to learn important language skills while gaining a deeper appreciation for Mexican culture. ¡Qué gran experiencia!
