LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Dear Arleta Parents, Caregivers and Community,

Thank you for your support and partnership as we’ve navigated the reported threat* to Arleta over the past week. It’s an important time to talk with your child about staying safe while playing or chatting online. While I know we all have various opinions about screen time, Roblox seems to be particularly problematic.

Please see the following links shared with me by a current Arleta parent for details as to why. We’re still both reading all these articles but felt it was important to share them with you so you can use your own critical lenses as our shared learning as a community continues to work to keep our children safe.

  • Associated Press – Kentucky lawsuit says Roblox fails to protect children on its popular online gaming platform
    Read Article ›

  • Bloomberg – Roblox: The Gaming Platform With a Predator Problem
    Read Article ›

  • People – Roblox Facing Mounting Lawsuits as Parents Across U.S. Allege Company Enables Child Predators
    Read Article ›

  • CBS News – Lawsuit against Roblox alleges sexploitation of 10-year-old
    Read Article ›

  • WIRED – Is Roblox Getting Worse?
    Read Article ›

It’s challenging to know how to highlight the concerns coming forward about Roblox specifically enough. Roblox is problematic because apparently ill-intentioned people are flocking to Roblox because it is so easy to abuse kids through this particular game.

I know we don’t need more worries but it’s important to know that just a month ago on September 9th it came to light through whistleblower testimony in front of the US Senate, that children are very likely to experience harm using newer technologies like VR (Virtual Reality). Cayce Savage, in dialogue with Josh Hawley (R-MO), estimated that any child that is in a social space in VR will come into contact with or be directly exposed to something very inappropriate.

Some ways to take action-

  1. Our upcoming Arleta Community book study of The Anxious Generation. Our Arleta Site Council will soon be sending an inquiry for interest in joining, and every family that participates will receive a free copy of the book! Once we know the amount of interest our Site Council will set dates accordingly and we’ll launch!

  2. Common Sense Media - this is a great resource for parents trying to navigate how to create boundaries and allow children to participate.

  3. Recommendations for caregivers

1. Keep an eye on your child's playtime
    • Ideally, sit near them and closely monitor what they’re doing.

    • This isn’t always possible; consider checking in regularly (at least checking how it's going every 10-15 minutes);

2. If someone unknown joins a chat, children should leave then change their username.
3. Talk with your child about internet safety:
    • Don’t play or chat with anyone they don't know.

    • Don't share their username with anyone, even their friends.

    • Don’t accept anyone they don't know as friends.

    • DO tell you or another trusted adult immediately if anyone asks them for a photo or if someone is asking for any personal or identifying information about them.

I’m sorry for such a dark message. Here’s something much brighter! Our beautiful mural honoring Native Peoples created for our community by Indigenous artist Malcohm O’Neill is hanging in our main hall. We are so grateful to Arleta parent Arley Ann Laman and former Arleta parents / always Arleta Family, Sheryl Moren and Melissa Sircy for their work to make this project happen. Please mark your calendars for a special community celebration on November 21st, the afternoon before Fall Break. Mural to honor Native Peoples

*Message I sent with PPS Security Services last Thursday evening: Threat Towards Arleta 10/13 After investigation the threat was deemed not credible by PPS Security Services and Portland Police Bureau.

Warmly,

Lisa

OBOB Team Registration Opens Oct 24

Oregon Battle of the Books is a friendly reading comprehension trivia competition for grades 3-5. Create your own team of 2-5 players, or just sign up and we will help you form a team! Teams will read the 16 books from the 2025-26 OBOB list.

Read as much as you can from the official list of 16 awesome titles from various genres, or divide up the books between yourself and your teammates and work together to read the list (for instance, each child on a team of four reads four of the books)!

Teams require a parent/guardian coach. Choose a team name. Make a team logo. You can even make team t-shirts if you like! Practice recall and memorization, then come battle it out in a lively and encouraging Q&A trivia competition in the library! Pool Play will be held during school hours for our 2025-26 season.

Teams will be matched against each other and answer specific trivia questions about the books. The tournament will begin in January, with battles being held during school hours. Prior to this, we will have optional practice battles and optional after school open library time. Our final championship battles will be scheduled for late February, after school, well in advance. All finalized dates TBD.

How do I get on a team? Find other Arleta students in 3rd-5th grade that are interested in participating and sign up as a team.

● If you want to participate but aren’t sure who you can be on a team with, tell your parents, your teacher or our librarian, and they will help you.

● Registration will begin October 24th. Registration will run for a month and will officially close November 30th. It can take time to commit and form teams so get started right away!

● Return your registration form to your teacher or to the librarian.

Find the official list of titles and other resources at: www.oregonbattleofthebooks.org

Below is a full list of the OBOB books for Grades 3-5 2025-26. Click on the links (or the images below) to borrow them from Multnomah County Library, or you can order them from Powells Bookstore!

BEAT THE BELL

Last week, Arleta had a 95% attendance rate (up from 92% the week before) and 103 tardies (less than the 113 tardies the week before).

Looking for some tips to help you get out of the door on time? Check back here each week for ideas.

This week's tips:

  • Make sure everything your kid needs for the day is right by the door the night before.

  • Designate turns in the bathroom in the morning, set a timer for fairness.
  • Get kids an old-fashioned alarm clock for their room. Set it across the room. Practice using it.

    Poetry Corner Poetry Corner

Each week we feature a poem from literature that you can share with your kids. Poems are quick ways to practice literacy and work like little packages of thoughts and feelings that explore the world in new ways. This poem was written by Nobel Prize Winner Seamus Heaney.

Had I not been awake I would have missed it

Had I not been awake I would have missed it,

A wind that rose and whirled until the roof

Pattered with quick leaves off the sycamore

And got me up, the whole of me a-patter,

Alive and ticking like an electric fence:

Had I not been awake I would have missed it,

It came and went so unexpectedly

    And almost it seemed dangerously,

Returning like an animal to the house,

A courier blast that there and then

    Lapsed ordinary. But not ever

    After. And not now.

TOMORROW - PAT & PIRC ICE RESPONSE NEIGHBORHOOD NETWORK TRAINING - OCT 17 & OCT 23

In the face of escalating ICE activity in our communities and potential national guard showing up in our neighborhoods, Together Lab and the Portland Association of Teachers are bringing together trusted faith communities, schools, residents and small businesses at the neighborhood level to be better prepared and more resilient. In coordination with regional and statewide groups like PIRC (Portland Immigrant Rights Coalition).

We know the most resilient communities are those with the strongest relationships. And that our neighborhoods thrive when we know each other and our stories, when we trust each other and care for one another. When we don't allow someone on the other side of the country to tell our story for us. And right now, we need our neighbors more than ever.

    Open to the public:

    • Monday: 10/13/2025 at Harrison Park Middle School; 5-7pm
    • Friday: 10/17/2025 at Ockley Green Middle School; 5-7pm
    • Thursday: 10/23/2025 at Jackson Middle School; 5-7pm
