Academic Olympics at Fernley High School
Fernley High School Academic Olympics
At Fernley High School, learning goes beyond the classroom through the exciting and competitive world of Academic Olympics — a team-based academic competition that challenges students to put their knowledge to the test in a fast-paced, high-energy environment.
What Is Academic Olympics?
Academic Olympics is a competitive program where students work together in teams to answer questions across a wide range of subjects, including math, science, English, social studies, current events, and even pop culture. Think of it as Trivial Pursuit ...but against other schools.
The program is designed not only to challenge students academically, but also to strengthen their teamwork, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills, all while having fun.
The FHS Team
Fernley High School’s Academic Olympics team typically includes around 10 dedicated team members, along with several rotating students who participate as their schedules allow. This structure keeps practices focused while also allowing students to specialize in specific subject areas and contribute their strengths to the team.
Students join by expressing interest and committing to the program. While strong academic skills are important, the team looks for students who are curious, motivated, collaborative, and positive. Some students even specialize in niche areas such as sports trivia or literature. Informational meetings and events are held so interested students can learn more before committing.
Preparing for Competition
Preparation is key. Team members meet regularly to review content, practice past questions, and develop competition strategies. Because matches move quickly, students also work on time management and effective communication.
The FHS team competes against regional schools such as Dayton and Silver Stage, giving students the opportunity to test their knowledge, learn from others, and represent Fernley with pride.
Building Skills for the Future
While competitions are exciting, the long-term benefits are even greater. Academic Olympics helps students learn how to:
Think critically under pressure
Collaborate effectively
Communicate clearly
Stay disciplined and focused
These skills extend far beyond high school — preparing students for success in college, careers, and everyday life. Just as importantly, the program helps students build confidence and discover that learning can be both challenging and deeply rewarding.
A Coach’s Perspective
Under the leadership of Coach Nicole Gonzalez, the Academic Olympics team continues to thrive. For Coach Gonzalez, the most meaningful part of the program is watching students grow — not just academically, but personally.
Seeing students build confidence, strengthen teamwork, and develop leadership skills over time is incredibly rewarding. Many students stay involved all four years of high school, allowing strong relationships to form and growth to be witnessed year after year — not just as competitors, but as individuals.
